Cameras don't have an elaborate strap because it would inflate the cost by $150... when many don't use a strap, or use a wrist strap. So it's left up to the photog to upgrade to the strap they prefer.
Your enthusiasm is contagious and you got some amazing images. This video made me revisit some pictures I took of a mountain here in Norway back in april, which also consisted of white snow against white clouds. Made them black and white and edited them further; I am surprised with what I could get out of them. Thank you so much! :)
Thank you so much Maximilian, that’s very kind of you. Yes, it is interesting what people ‘miss’ when they don’t properly look at an image that’s available to them. I’m glad you were able to revisit some images from Norway. I was there a couple of weeks ago and loved it! I’ll have to go back for a proper photo expedition I think…
Wow Neil. Spectacular views up that alpine road. Was expecting you to meet another car coming the other way which would have freaked me out! On my bucket list for sure. Great job.
Thanks Barry, really appreciate you taking the time to watch. Yes, that road was a little interesting in places. Thankfully, I only came across another vehicle as I was heading back down and it was near that little church, so no issues. Cheers.
Hi Neil... love these abstract images. I'm relatively new to photography, using a Panasonic Lumix bridge camera. You mention using a 110mm lens but you didn't mention ISO, aperture, speed etc... I'm presuming a higher aperture on something like ISO 800 to enable depth of field and a fast enough shutter speed? I also assume you'll be focussing manually?
Hi Phil. Thanks for dropping a comment, I really appreciate it. Yes, you're absolutely right, ISO 800 and aperture between f6.4 & f8. Shutter was between 1/100 & 1/120. I was still able to use the auto focus on these shots, but yes, manual would work very well. Thanks again, all the best, Neil.
Nice one Neil. I too love the Channel Tunnel or LeShuttle as it's now known. Easy to get the motorhome on and off and you're away to all parts of Europe. Usually stop off in LeMans on our way down to the South. Keen to see the rest of your video as I'm hoping to do France, Switzerland, Austria and Germany for the summer hols. Thanx for this :)
Thanks Paul, much appreciated. Yes, I’m currently working on the stills for the next video, into Switzerland. Do you use the Emovis tag for the tolls or do you always have your co-driver?
my only complain the slide's grip part are easily worn off, i got a replacement of Peak Design Slide lite back in October 2023, the grip part already started to come off
That's quite interesting. Although I've not had this problem, you're not the first person to mention this. I think Peak Design did replace the other persons strap when they got in touch with the company directly, so that may be worth trying. Thanks and good luck.
@NeilShelbyLong I no longer eligible for warranty due to my strap has already warrantied out. i think is valid reason because they wanna prevent fraudulent that anyone who take advantage of their camera strap's lifetime warranty. In my defence, the grip part is really not lasting for me... maybe because i sweat a lot and I’m living in Tropical country. I going to use it as one strap camera strap but as dual camera strap, i think not. I just hope when they release new camera strap, they can improve the grip part.
Ah, I see. It still might be worth dropping an email direct to them. Even if they don’t replace it, it might assist their R&D team to find a better solution for different climates. All the best 👍🏻
شكرا اخي الفنان بصراحة معلومات مهمة جدا حول التصوير المعماري و عن قيمة المبنى التاريخي شكرا لك ٫٫٫٫٫٫ انت ملهم ٫ Thank you, my artist brother. Honestly, very important information about architectural photography and the value of the historical building. Thank you. ٫٫٫٫٫. You are inspiring.
Yeah, I just leave the "stock" straps in the boxes. I went with the Slide Lite as I primarily shoot MFT and agree that it's a clever piece (as are many of PD's products--I also have the Capture with dual plate* and Pro Pad**, plus I just got the everyday backpack zip 20L with the hip belt). The only downside with my original Slide Lite was that enough of the silicone nubbins wore/fell off (over less than a year), but they sent me a replacement (PD Certified, but good as new, with free shipping) and let me keep the old one. It's good to see actual customer "Service" for a change. *With a Manfrotto (at least the 496 head that came with my BeFree GT X-Pro Carbon), you need PD's Dual Plate as the Standard Plate won't fit (although it is supposedly Arca-Swiss-compatible). **That's necessary when you use the Dual Plate if you want the camera to hang lens-down (and why wouldn't you, especially with a longer lens).
I was considering getting one of these straps. Thank you for the thorough review, I'm gonna get one! I wish that camera companies would just send a nice strap when you buy a camera. Oh well, capitalism. Also, love the design of the background where you are standing, so pretty!
I love this PD strap. I have nine in various widths. I use one on all of my gadgets that need a strap and have added them to ifootage monopod as well. One often overlooked feature is that flipping the pad to the sticky side while walking even when in cross-body mode reduces movement of the camera a lot.
That's what worries me too. Quality brands go under or have to cave to capitalist ways and have to produce crap, that barely lasts the warranty to survive unscrupulous competitors. Because buyers don't know or care or are simply too stupid.
You didn’t mention the lifetime guarantee. PD will replace your strap for free if it breaks or loses function. I replaced my first one when the silicone grippers (for shoulder carry) got all gummy (because of heat, maybe). I submitted a claim and got a replacement with no fuss. Same with their bags, by the way. Great company that truly stands behind their products.
His problem is that the Peak Design Slide is so good, you won't buy a new one. The Betteridge's law of headlines applies here: If a video title is a question, the answer is just "no" and it is just clickbait.
also if you go with spider holster, it has elements which stick out of the camera base, so means it doesn't store in a bag, at least as well as Peak Design, the same locking systems can be used, for transferring onto a backpack strap, etc. but these are small and you have to get a lot of them, one for each attachment, they are also proprietary ( ball and stud) so unlike Arca Swiss you can ONLY go this route, with plain dovetails, Anything can fit, even off brands, saving money.
great video, but one more point for it, this design, ie: having the strap cradle the whole camera, on the side, is like what hasselblad V system straps did, have a quick clip, and a wide strap, designed so it hangs lens down, for these bodies it's essential (weight/cost of the system), also not having to be a surgeon to tie it on is fantastic, esp. for people with low dexterity, and the fact that you can take the strap off, means it stores in a bag well, and if you go from 'hand held' to tripod, you don't have anything which can topple the thing over, by catching on your jacket, etc. as it's well out of your way.
Hi Neil , got mine replaced by PD free of charge after the silicone bits melted , no problems with the replacement, thank you PD , also use the thinner versions which are more practical for short distance walkabouts . Excellent video .
I was in England on business in January of 1994 and this was one of the locations I visited. I have a picture or two in an album of my trip. It is fun to see a video of a location I have been to that is a very, very long way from where I live.
As long as we learn from our mistakes, we're still moving forward. As long as I've been taking photos, I'm still learning, and that's not a bad thing. Onward!
Wow! That’s so nice of you to say, thank you. I’ll be making more of these very soon. I do actually need a little nicer weather for the next one though… fingers crossed.
I also like taking long exposure shots and noticed this spot (and put it on my to do list) after driving over the bridge a couple of times this autumn. If it's possible, I hope to get all of the bridge in one image, though that may mean having to take several shots to create a panoramic. Like you, I dislike the processing part so tend to try and get the image I want in camera to avoid having to do much work when I get home!
I was randomly recommended this video by youtube and I loved it! Not least because I've tried something similar from a moving car, so it was nice to see someone exploring a similar idea (possibly more successfully!). Loved the images, and your creative approach
Love landscape photography but can't , or don't enjoy walking the kind of distances we see people doing on RU-vid? Well this video could be the answer to help you scratch that itch. The most comfortable bad weather photography ever!
Happy New Year to you too Barry! Thanks for the lovely comment, it’s much appreciated. Hopefully the weather here will clear a little so I can get out and about again soon… I can’t make the whole channel about wet weather imagery! 😂😂😂
Neil; Nice video and I particularly appreciate your thorough explanations of how you navigate the editing process with the original vision of the photo. My vote is to return to the ‘crime scene’ and reshoot the image. I sometimes do that > 3X until I get it right. In my workflow, I view this practice as a ‘reference’. I’m not as fast as others to see an image always on the first try. This time, I’d suggest trying a mono-chrom camera instead of a converted colored image. Also maybe try at near high noon when there may be greater reflection to the bridge’s underbelly. Just saying. Your vision and sense of process gives me inspiration, thx
Thanks Robert. Really appreciate your time and response. Yes, I think it would be interesting to shoot again, and it’s not out of the question to do so.
Ah, yeah, you noticed that time lag… 🙈 One day I’ll get over the imposter syndrome and be consistent on here… 🤦🏻♂️ I need more of you and Dirk as cheerleaders! That’ll speed things up 😁. Cheers Rob, I really do appreciate your support.
