The best Fujifilm tip I’ve seen in a long while! I’d just add that seeing the natural live view shows you the true dynamic range of the camera, meaning you’re more likely to expose to the right, giving you better detail in the shadows. Having the “wysiwyg” live view and highlight clipping warning up, as you demonstrated, means you’re more likely to underexpose, for fear of clipping the highlights. I’ve not even bothered with the highlight clipping warning, because it comes on too readily. I “know” that I have more headroom available in the raw file but, TBH, it can be a guessing game. Natural live view takes away the guess work, so I’m now going to turn highlight clipping and natural live view on. Hope that makes sense and thanks for the great tip!

You might still want to set your image quality to Fine + Raw even if you don't use the jpeg files. If you want to check for critical focus and zoom in, the camera will use the embedded jpeg preview when shooting in raw only but the full size jpeg when you shoot jpeg as well. The embedded jpeg preview is much smaller so you can't zoom in very far. I read this has been improved recently but I believe it's still the case for the X-T3 and older models.

Thank you Chris! Finally, I understand the live view feature. I could never, for the life of me, figure out the benefit of that setting, and I do shoot RAW, so now I have a new feature to play with. I love your 'control testing' to explain how and why to use it. As for the preview of EXP/WB, this drove me absolutely crazy when I purchased my first speed light. . It took me a long time to find that setting and I have since added that setting to My Menu so it's quick to turn on/off. Great job!

@@martstevensprojectfotograf9078 @Mart Stevens Project Fotografie because if you don't turn it on again after using the flash it's gonna give you a false reading . You turn it off when you equip the flash just to be able to see the scene you're trying to shoot because otherwise, the camera is showing you a dark exposure that's gonna be "okay" once the flash triggers. I say "okay" because you need to take a photo with the flash and set your exposure.

Great content as usual, I really can't understand why people put thumbs down on this kind of content or channel... Natural Live View is clearly for Raw only shooters because the jpegs (for example if you should both) will be overexposed very often. However, I find it sometimes difficult to judge the exposure anyway. For sure you should not see any highlight warnings where you want texture, but even then it is not for 100% sure, nor is the luminosity histogram, at least in my experience. The best way I found to control the maximal exposure is the RGB histogram, but this is so big in the viewfinder that I can't shoot with it ;-)

Thanks for making videos on fujifilm. Your videos really help me to learn a lot about my new XT-3. What led me to this video was that when live view is on and i try shooting in very low light my lcd just shows me random noise which makes it very hard to focus (though image doesn’t have that any noise). This issue disappears when live mode is off. Do you know if this is normal or am I missing out on some setting?

Natural Live View appears to be a godsend for people using the ETTR technique, because they'll want to know when the RAW file is clipping, not the jpeg. This is still possible to do on cameras without Natural Live View, using a technique called Uni White Balance, but it generally renders the image green until balanced in post. So, thank you, Fuji!

Great explanation! But it does prompt another question. In a previous show you illustrated how one setting which does effect the raw file is Dynamic Range. I just set up a shot in my X-E$ where the highlights were slightly blown out even in natural live view. However, increasing the DR had no effect on the blown out highlights. Is this an inconsistency, or am I missing something? Thanks for all the work!

Awesome video! My question, for pal2tech or anyone else: Does "Natural Live View" account for the "Dynamic Range" (100%/400%) setting, or not? My understanding is that the "Dynamic Range" setting DOES affect RAW files, and thus I would want the histogram to reflect it. Thanks!

I know this is an old video so hopefully you see it. I’m having 2 issues. One is sorta just nagging. The other is kind of a big deal. Then big deal problem is that every time I shoot, if I go from shade to sun for example…the screen goes totally overexposed. Sometimes this can last 2-3 seconds it seems. I suspect it’s the sensor lagging to the adjusted meter reading but I don’t know for sure. Dive missed shots because of it. This happens in both AV mode and manual. The other more nagging issue is when half clicking to focus…the image in the viewfinder or rear screen adjusts slightly and is different than the final output Jpg. Any idea why this happens? If you covered this in another video, please inform and I’ll go watch it. Thanks!

Invaluable, sir! Thank you. I don’t recall, but have you done an in depth dive of white balance and the selective color (tint selection)? I use to use Provia but now I use Astia with a selective color shift of red: 2 and blue: 2. Sometimes I photograph people close to greenery outside. This causes a slight reflection of green colored light be reflected onto peoples faces. This aforementioned color shift helps a great deal in fixing that in camera while also shooting raw.

Excellent BUT …..one card slot raw the other card slot Jpeg , …each capture thereby having a raw and jpeg version of the same capture …many a time the jpeg being good enough . So when capturing images this way …natural live view on or off when composing ?
