I've switched to using Fuji X Raw Studio if I want to edit my Raw files. Not only does it maintain the true Fuji look but it helps you learn what settings to use next time. Even though Fuji worked with C1 to get the profiles close, the in camera processing just has that certain magic that makes Fuji special.
I love it when you go out and take us with you! So many photographers on RU-vid who just stay in their studio and we never get to see them actually take photos
I usually don't take a lot of photos on any given day, so I just shoot raw. It lets me concentrate more on interest, composition etc, and I enjoy sitting down after dinner and editing the photos ( it beats watching tv.
Thank you for sharing this video. I grew up in this neighborhood, the past 6 years of coming back to see my parents, I always roamed around between the 2 bridges with my fuji film cameras and my R5. My father suffered a spine injury and my parents have to live with me down in MD now. I miss my walks from the Manhattan Bridge down to the Seaport. It feels like an eternitiy since I have been Home now. Thank you Omar for sharing this video of your walk. I'm literally crying while I typed this, I needed to see home. Thank you so much friend. There are limits, but if one pays attention to the kind of pictures you take and how you take them, you can edit the JPGs sufficiently for most uses -- even big prints for your walls. Many youtubers exaggerate the need to always shoot and edit RAW and the uselessness of JPGs. Last week I went to a RAW because a black and white I took really required colour. The rest of the photos I took on the day with the specific black and white recipe looked pretty much exactly how I wanted them to look, with some basic exposure and highlight - shadown touch ups, so I fail to see why go to RAW to end up where I already am? Appreciate your video!!! They entertain me but also play a mentoring role in my photography life.
I follow a similar rule for both my Fuji and Ricoh GR III. Most of my casual street photos I shoot in JPG and gently tweak them if necessary - but I still capture both jpg and raw for the choice. For more serious work, like paid gigs, and challenging scenes... I'll process the RAW files. I will say that the difference in how Adobe LR vs Capture One handles the Fuji files is remarkable. I'm sure you've heard this before. I was shocked at how much better Capture One did with my images. A long personally fought battle, I hated the idea of moving to new software, with the learning curve, data management etc. but in the end I'm so glad I did. The results are undeniable.
One of my favorite photos I took was ON the Manhattan!! take the walking path on the bridge, Once you get RIGHT over the FDR, Look for a cut out hole in the chainlink fence. BEST view of the city!
It's always refreshing when I can use the Fuji jpegs and be done within 30 minutes of uploading from the SD card... The less time I spend in C1 the happier I am... SOOC jpegs are so refreshing when it works for your photography on a given day.
I really like this kind of more relax mood video. Reminds me of the one you did with the GFX100 while shoorting the NY skyline. It's still one of my favorite video!
This was one of your best videos brother. That into was relaxing. I used to work all around that area back in the days and you made it look so great. Interesting smells and all lol.
I always shoot RAW + JPG for that exact same reason. Minor tweaks to the JPG files are absolutely fine and I've been doing them for over a decade. Only when there is a lot of editing required do I resort to the RAW files and redevelop the image. I mostly do this in very high contrast situations where I need tons of dynamic range to play with. In all other situations (almost 80% to 90% of what I shoot) I just take my time to ensure that I get the images I want straight off camera.
I love watching your video’s, even bought an E2 a while ago, because you made this great video about it, and it was cheap ;) I think you are a great photographer and a great teacher. Fujifilm should hire you, and if not, they don’t understand the power that is OmarG. I love watching you taking pictures.
I feel like you're very intuitive with your editing. I'd be interested in What's your general thought process. Does your mind look at temperature first then contrast etc. I'm just starting out and I'm interested with how the intuition develops. Even with micro thoughts and adjustments that happen on the fly.
The other thing is, I spend much of my day job on a computer. Photography is a hobby, and what's great about that hobby is to get out and take nice pics, not to spend MORE time on a computer! Mostly, if a photo requires a lot of editing, I abandon it. I prefer to simply accentuate what I got from the camera. It's not a purist principle. I just prefer taking photos to producing digital art.
shoot raw only. edit keepers in-camera (film sim, +/-, highlights/shadows, wb etc). Zap over edited keepers (now jpegs) onto your phone. Take bangers to Snapseed for levelling, cropping, healing. Back up on SD and to external hard drive. I can edit 100 shots in about 20 minutes this way. I can't edit a RAW in Lightroom better than Fuji can make a jpeg, once you just accept this life becomes much easier.
As I have mentioned previously (were you listening?), I used to live at 3 Hanover Square and so I saw these sights every day. Used to walk the back street to ChinaTown and eat like a king for a few bucks (1979). I love that you keep going back there and really appreciate the process lesson. Someday please share your philosophy on how you decide what to keep and what to delete (poof!) between all the raw and JPEGs. Makes my head hurt 😞
You echo one of my concerns. Having all those jpegs and raw files and looking at them and making decisions about what to use or not use eats up a lot of time.
Hi Omar, bit late on this video. Have to agree with you re the engineering of the Brooklyn Bridge. There was a documentary on TV covering the construction of this bridge and the stats are mind-blowing. And it's not just about what you can see, it's about what you can't see. The construction of the caissons was a huge undertaking and many men lost their live due to what was called at the time 'caisson disease', basically decompression. There's a big article on Wiki and as bridge go Brooklyn Bridge is in my top 5, hopefully i get to see it some time. Sorry, i digress again. Wonderful images mate, keep up the good work. When I was shooting in Canon, I always shot RAW and spend hours on the editing. Afterwards, when I made the jump to Fuji, I very quickly dropped RAW completely, coz I was already very happy with what the cameras were doing with their film sims, and that led me to just grab my camera more and go out shooting instead of being stuck in front of my computer editing for days. Sure I still do pull up a bit the shadows and down the highlights most of the time, but that's it. Very little else is required, and I can't thank Fuji enough for completely changing my workflow and make me enjoy photography once more.
The info about the bridges is very interesting and very cool photos about the building process. For someone like me who has almost zero knowledge about lightroom or any other editing software this was very educational. Now, I see the advantages or disadvantages when editing RAW or JPEGs. I need to try it out. Thank you!
I have been using photo elements 22 by Adobe but I think you have convinced me to upgrade to Lightroom and experiment with the Fuji jpegs more. Great video as always 👍
I do this on my iPad with the standard Apple photos app. I upload the JPEG from my Canon RP and do minor tweaks like in this video. They look good even on A4 prints.
The only reason I shoot Raw+Jpeg with Fujifilm is so I can hit Q in playback and tweak the white balance when it is inevitably askew. I hate the wild magenta and green whiplashing of AWB on Fujifilm so I set a kelvin of usually 4800k and tweak it after if needs be.
Point well made and illustrated. Cool historical photos; wonder if today’s builds will last as long. Wish image captions had been larger/bolder - they were difficult to read, IMO. Clever, theme consistent wall art “seeing color again” - nice. Did you “nudge” the van to escape the parking space?😁
Great video and beautiful photos! I'm taking the hybrid approach too.. a handy analogy from my film days is having negatives *and*. prints on hand. And...I see you're taking screen shots (by phone?) of your SOOC jpeg settings. OH HOW I WISH Fuji film recipe data (i.e. CCR, GRN, etc) could be fully noted/recalled in Capture One, etc., but your screen shot seems to indicate that's not the case.. bummer.
Out of curiosity, how come you don't just change the camera profile to load the the film preset by default on the RAW then you are essentially editing a RAW that looks like the JPEG?
I need some advice from people who have the Fuji XT3. I have a Canon 6D + 24-105 L lens for a few years now. Although photo wise I am satisfied with the results but the age of it starts to show in the way of use. The auto focus is not good, I can't use live view at all because of how slow and bad it is, it's heavy and clunky for my treavel photography as well. Though the battery is very good and the lens is nice as well. For my future trip to Japan (staying there for 6 months), I was thinking of selling it and getting the Fuji XT3. It's newer, has more features and is just faster, though the battery might be worse. My concern is that it would be with the 18-55 kit lens and I don't want to downgrade in image quality, also I have not shot in APSC for years so I don't know if it would be a huge downgrade in that regard as well. I just want to enjoy walking around and taking pics again, with my canon I take great photos but I need to only use the viewfinder and prepare lots of stuff in advance if I'm doing shoots for friends. Any advice?

I’m not Omar but I was in the same situation as you. I ended up getting an XT3 over the XT30 and I’m glad I made the decision. Personally, I really like the feel of the bigger camera and mini grip, the D-pad is honestly an essential, which the XT30 doesn’t have, you can program shortcuts to any D-pad button and change your photography settings on the go! The weather sealing is an added bonus!
hi omar, what do you think of the dynamic range that produced by XTrans II, which I know you have inside the xe2, especially for the jpeg? is it good enough for daily documentation needs and print in 48x32 inches?
Currently I always use a phone, and I think the results are not enough for my needs in terms of detail and also dyanamic range, is the Xtrans II a worthy upgrade for me?
I always shoot RAW but only allow 2 minutes to process. I don't like the over processed look and, after all, you can't polish a turd. Get it right in camera first.
