Examination of ability to use RAW, JPEG, and TIFF files on Fujifilm cameras such as the X-T4 and GFX line. Comparison between image quality on RAW vs. converted TIFF, as well as comparison between Fujifilm converted TIFF vs. Photoshop converted TIFF.
This video is in two parts: the first half is the RAW/JPEG/TIFF education portion. The second half is a personal story about Mother's Day 2022 and trying to get the perfect photo.

So the second half of this video hit me pretty hard. I lost my mom suddenly in Feb and hadn't been able to spend anywhere near enough time with her over the past few years due to Covid. I have spent the last few years getting much better at photography and she only got to see a tiny bit of it, non of it in person (she was really big into photography). It's an important lesson I wish I had learned earlier. Don't get so wrapped up in life that you aren't able to sit down with the people that mean something to you and enjoy life. I am glad you had a good mothers day and thanks for all the videos.

Since buying my first camera (Fuji XT4) in December 2020 I have not missed a Pal2tech video. I have learned so much from you about my camera. This is the first one that has brought tears to my eyes. I am so very happy that you got to experience that with your mom! Your advice at the end should be taken to heart by everyone that watches! Oh, Chris. That was a wonderful time you spent. I went out with my mother for lunch periodically and took photos at restaraunts, that were the good memories. The photos were shared with our relatives at the funeral and it was good. I did not have a chance to take such photos of my father. He passed away about ten years ago. But upon that, I started going out with my mother for a lunch, which turns out to have more chances to have communications and take photos.

I love this so much. I just started crying when his mom was interested in what he did & she was proud of him! Also, I just want to say that my X-T4 is my first ever digital camera ( I've shot with an analog for my entire life, digital is just easier to archive & deliver to clients), so you've been the most clear & insightful person I've come across. I recently went on a trip & got overwhelmed trying to remember settings. Rather than missing shots, I just pulled out my phone & watched the video I needed to watch a few times. I felt stupid, but a kind stranger told me that I looked confident & professional as they walked by. I would like to believe it's because you take the leap to share with us even if you feel like someone else might do it better or it makes you feel vulnerable. It's much appreciated!!! 🧡

My wife lost her mom (on Kauai) in August, the last time we saw her was March 2019. We were to see her March 2020 just as everything was closing down on the islands, so we cancelled our plans thinking it was not a big deal, that in 2 to 3 months all would be fine. Well, Kauai was really concerned about visitors, and my mother in law wouldn't let us come over. My wife was in complete shock/denial upon learning of her mom's passing, broke my heart. Was happy to hear of your experience with your mom, bless you.

Sometimes we forget that we started taking photos for fun. It's very easy to get bogged down with tec and post and forget life is sort and laughs are a premium so just get out and shoot for the fun of it. Excellent points! That’s why I prefer to take family pictures with a fast prime lens. I want the photos to reflect the actual lighting conditions rather than add additional light and make it seem “artificial”. The only thing I might do is to fill shadows with a small on-camera flash by 1 stop difference.

I loved your “second” video on the photo for Mother’s Day. The lesson you learned and shared is one that many many pro and semi-pro photographers have had to learn. It isn’t an easy one, since as you admitted, most of us are such perfectionist - especially when it come to wanting to please family. But the truth is - perfection doesn’t matter. In fact it is harmful - it destroys the morale of your subjects and they will grow to hate having you photograph them. After I finally learned this painful lesson, I made a rule for myself. I will spend no longer than five minutes AT THE MOST in setting up for a photo of family groups. And I will take the photos within a few seconds of having the group arranged and waiting. The rule has worked wonders for me. I can take multiple exposures with no one complaining and I always - ALWAYS - get at least one really good shot. Thanks so much for this important video.

Great vid. Capturing the moment is the key. I get all of the technical stuff and when someone is paying you it is important. One of my favorite photos was taken with an iPhone. Some blown highlights and dark shadows but the person taking it captured the moment. I don't care that it's not the most technical perfect picture. They nailed the moment.

Great video Chris! I haven't been aware of the possibility to convert the images to tiff files in my X-T4 and I really like the idea because I still could edit these files on my old LR6 if necessary. (I usually use C1 for my Fuji pictures.) Thank you so much for sharing the story with your mum. I couldn't agree more with everything you've said. I still have both of my parents (89 and 87) and we are very close. I recently started a photography project because I have seen that in our society elderly people are often treated with less respect and that their experience and life achievements are not valued enough. And I wanted to change that and honoring them by shooting their portraits and also documenting some of their everyday life, e.g. my dad repairing the TTL meter of my Praktica or stuff like that. I am so happy to hear that you and your mum could overcome what set you apart and wishing you both all the best and much time together in the future.

Man, I must have been chopping onions, because that last part was so moving and relatable. I'm a textbook over-thinker as well, and my need to chase perfection has gotten in the way of the experience before also. Thank you for sharing. And I am sure your mom saw this and beamed with pride. As to the educational element... to those Fujifilm shooters that struggle to dial in the sharpening & noise reduction in Lightroom, would you suggest importing TIFF files rather than the RAW since the images clearly looked "cleaner" from the starting point?

Interesting about the tiff conversion, thanks. So glad your mom could visit...it's why we did/do the social isolation, masks and vaccines, because we wanted/want all our family to survive covid (about a million in this country and 15 million worldwide have died and it's not over). Point is, your family toughing out not visiting for over 2 yrs gave you this time together as a family...and look how special it was. So maybe once or twice a month you (with wife and kids) could schedule a video chat with your mom... it's a nice way to keep in touch between visits...yes, nicer than by phone bcs it's visual, too. 🙃😉

And I love your second segment about your Mother's Day family photo. One of the great things about Fuji cameras is that with the film simulations, WHO CARES about white balance, because we're literally forcing it to something different in the recipe, and WHO CARES about noise, because we're literally adding grain to the image! I agree, in a professional setting you want to make sure your lighting is exactly how you want it, including perfect white balance and no mixed color temperatures. But the reason I love to shoot Fuji is that while you CAN do all those things if you want to, you can also just set it for a Kodak Portra 400 recipe and take a snapshot like we used to in the 1980s, except we have way more control over the exposure. And as someone who primarily shoots stills (some of them portraits), one of the things I always remind myself of is that what's way more important than perfect lighting or composition is the subject(s) in the photo. And another thing I remind myself of is that literally NO ONE but me would notice something being ever so slightly off, and what's more, something being slightly off sometimes creates an undefinable character that makes people like an image even more than if it were technically perfect. I'm so glad that your wife took control of the situation and that you were able to let go at that point and just have fun with it. Such an important lesson! Thanks as always for sharing your personal experiences and learning, my friend.

Thanks Chris - I can finally - I mean finally ck that off my list. I need to just stick with Raw. Regarding the 2nd half, thanks for opening up and revealing some things so honestly. Admire you. My 2nd focus, having lost both parents & my only son when he was 32, is learning next how to find a good printer & to make some photo books. Thanks for sharing. My mother may well be my original source to photography, not that she was a photographer perse. She passed a few years ago. No photo we take can truly capture what we feel, want to show, hope to convey, or wish to demonstrate...whether about the photo, the moment, or ourselves. But any photo we do take is most certainly better at doing that than any photo we don't take...or worse, the photos we wish we did take.

Nice video and lovely photos at the end of the video. I just wanted to say so many of my photography friends are so obsessed shooting in RAW and yet all my exhibition work I photograph in jpeg. I print using dichromate and other chemicals and the chemical prints are no bigger than A4; usually smaller 6x6 or 7x5. So for me it's jpeg all the time as it works.

I totally agree about not having regrets spending time with parents. I dropped everything and was able to get a work transfer a little over 200 miles away to live with my parents to be their primary caretaker. My dad passed a little over half a year ago and the only regret was not having nearly enough pictures of him during the 12 years I was taking care of him. When he passed, it dawned on me to get a camera to start learning since I still have my mom though her health has been deteriorating as of late. I was able to get some pictures on her good days. I was interested in Fujifilm ever since the X-Pro1 first launched and had planned to get an X-E1 back then when it came out but time and finances weren't on my side then. I stumbled on old notes recently about my plans on getting an X-E1, too. I'm glad I picked up an X-T1 after my dad's passing at a bargain to start learning the ins and outs of the system before I feel more comfortable spending more money to jump into a more recent camera. I've had my eye on the X-T4 but time will tell what happens next. Thanks for the education as well as your story!

I'm gonna be totally honest here and say I've done the exact same thing, we try so hard to get "the shot" not a shot. I had forgotten the rule of fun. Basically step one ask anyone in the family if they don't mind just getting a fun family shot no lights no composition and no directions. Ouch does that sound like the little voice in our heads as Professional Photographers what we shouldn't be doing. IMO being a perfectionest my cause my harm than good, we don't think we are doing anything wrong except getting that perfect shot. Thank you for letting us know we all have to think of our subjects as well to be happy and smile in front of the camera. My wife dropped the bomb shell on me about that after photgraphing her 21 years and counting another ouch !!!!
