What I really like about the retro dials is that you can change them while the camera is off. Which probably doesn’t sound like much, but I was surprised how much I missed it when I used a Sony the other day.

Great review as always Dustin! I think one important addition in regards to the buffer is to keep in mind that the buffer is in this case limited more by the reduced amount of RAM compared to the X-H2, rather than the use of UHS-II SD-cards. You can shoot more frames with the X-H2 and an SD-card in comparison with the X-T5. If you do a little napkin math the XT-5 seems to only have around 1GB of RAM for buffer use, while the X-H2 is at least 4GB. So that is one part of where the price difference is coming from.

I want the retro style controls and improved image and video capture and processing functionality of X-T5 in a camera body with a fully articulated screen and the ability to add an extended grip with space for two extra batteries (as it used to be in X-T4). This would be the perfect hybrid camera for me. Analogue controls make shooting stills in fully manual mode so much more enjoyable (you guessed it, I don't like PASM controls). Fully articulated screen is perfect for vlogging, selfies, and in general makes positioning of the camera and framing your photo or video so much easier (at least for me). Extended grip improves ergonomics and additional two batteries add a lot of extra power which is so useful on those hectic days of intensive photo and video shooting while sightseeing or hiking somewhere in places with no power socket in sight. Fujifilm seems to have arbitrarily split the potential buyers of their gear in two distinct groups. Either you are a photographer who occasionally shoots videos and does little or no vlogging (X-T5), or you are a videographer who occasionally shoots photos (X-H2/X-H2S). But what if you are someone like me, a person in the market for a new camera who (i) learned photography back in the halcyon days of analogue film cameras, and therefore (ii) highly values the retro-style controls of Fujifilm digital cameras such as X-T4 or X-T5, and (iii) absolutely adores the Fujifilm film simulations, and (iv) loves making videos as much as photos? Suddenly, for the new customers of my profile, Fujifilm made the buying decision so much more difficult. Thank you for this review and for all your reviews Dustin. I enjoy them so much, you're doing a great job. Happy New Year 2023 and greetings from Warsaw.

I do agree that they have very intentionally created some market separation between the two lines, which does mean that the X-T5 has taken a step back in a few areas.

The price difference is even narrower in Europe. I would definitely have paid the difference if the body shape and UX were the same: dials, tilt screen, dials that actually click as a function button. So, I don´t see it as a genuine choice for fans of the x-t3/5 body style and experience, unfortunately. The build quality of the x-h2 was noticeably better also that the x-t5, but in my hands not as ergonomic (finger gymnastics required to use on-handed), and I wanted that x-t5 shooting experience and functionality. In a way I wish Fuji had put everything it could into the x-t5 from the x-h2 (EVF, one Compact Flash slot) and just made it that little more expensive. The body shape, UX and 8k were enough to differentiate the two cameras without the artifical differences. Two great cameras, though.

Dustin--I love your in depth reviews, you do a great job. I had ordered an X-t5 but put the order on hold because there has been tons of complaints all over the internet Fuji forums about inferior AF performance with this camera. I think it is unfortunate, thought understandable given the crazy weather we've been having, that you were not able to do your usual in depth testing of the AF system. I, for one, would really appreciate it if you can add a more detailed AF test as an addendum to this review. The AF performance is definitely the main push back on this camera. I would also be interested in your take on high ISO noise with this camera vs the X-T4 with it's smaller sensor in terms whether the higher pixel density is associated with the expected increase in noise. Again, thanks for your wonderful work, I really appreciate it.
@NeilMcAliece
@NeilMcAliece Год назад
I suspect that some of the AF complaints might have been to do with the camera setting defaults. I was pretty disappointed with the hit rate on the XH2 until finding that it was set to release priority instead of focus priority. It meant that when shooting a fast moving subject at 15fps, you got what looked like focus confirmation in the evf or lcd, and the satisfying sound of the crazy fast shutter, but maybe 50% or a little better of the shots in focus. After switching to focus priority, usually the camera won't hit the advertised 15fps, and sounds a bit stuttery, but at least it's not wasting my time taking a heap of frames that I was always going to discard later. Without measuring it, I suspect that the shot rate is more like 7-10fps with focus priority, but my hit rate seems to be comfortably over 90% now. I'm very satisfied with that.
@DustinAbbottTWI

@markm83

Hi Steve, I was one of the early gripers about the AF-C tracking performance, but am now "eating crow". After following the suggestions of other users, I have changed from release to focus priority and turned the AF+MF setting off. The tracking is now working well, very noticeably better than my X-T3. Also for Wide Tracking in continuous mode, I experimented further with the Tracking Sensitivity & AF Speed options to get a good hit rate (3 or 4 out of 5) when tracking a single football player during crowded, chaotic & fast moving action (using the Fuji 50-140mm F2.8).

Retired one of the xt3s I use for weddings and got an xt5. Decided against X-H2 because of screen, CF Express and weight/size. Very happy so far. Camera performs beautifully and AF (especially S-AF) is a major step up. Love the new sensor. Out of the box C-AF still not there in action heavy scenarios in terms of „fire and forget“ reliability like Sony/Canon, although can be improved to a certain degree when tweaking settings. For Fuji users, that are heavily invested in the system, and where switching systems left and right is not an option, this is the best Fuji‘s ever been.

CFEXPRESS is costly but you can get deals on them. SD card slots will be faded out in lieu of CFEXPRESS for speed. That said I bought a 512gb CFEXPRESS card from Sabrent for 159.00. This is a fair price for this card and for the speed 300.00 more fore the XH2 was worth it. Sometimes I think that I should have gotten the XH2S. But I don't shoot much video. Big highlight of the X-T5 is the new AI chip and improved subject/eye AF algorithm. Was hoping to see it more in action. Some people hyped it has reached Sony A1 or Canon R3/R5 level and no longer behind. IMO after testing one at the store don't think that is true yet, but definitely closer.

Great review; felt very objective. I had an X-T4 and now the 5 and I’ve been mildly roasted in the Fuji groups for suggesting that I avoid going over 3200 with the new camera, whereas with my X-T4 I had similar noise performance at around 6400.
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI Год назад
I don't think it is a full stop difference, myself, between the two cameras. I'm actually pleasantly surprised that noise levels aren't radically increased despite the huge resolution increase.
@brownbear100
@brownbear100 Год назад
Not my experience (coming from the x-t3, twin to the x-t4). With the x-t5 iso 10,000 is where my comfort zone starts to get tested. This is only a smidge lower than the x-t3 where 12800 would be my de facto limit. The main reason isn´t the noise per se, but unlike the x-t3 at high ISO (10,000+) if you push the files (heavy crop, shaddow recovery) those little white pixels start making an appearance, and these can be a pain to fix. They only seem to occur in the black areas. I´ve seen them referred to as hot pixels, but they´re not. But were it not for that, the nopise performance at ISO 12800 would be very comparable, and looking at the image as a whole - not pixel peeping - you wouldn´t really be able to tell. This is also true comparing to my x100v.
@Apaolino21
@Apaolino21 Год назад
@@brownbear100 Have you tried downsampling the files? I export my x-t5 files with a long edge of 6000 pixles and that gives me a file size close to my x100v & x-t30ii. At that point, I cant tell them apart.

Thanks for the review, having had the XH2 and XH2s on loan from fuji for a few weeks ive decided ( I think ) to go for the XT5, that flippy screen drove me nuts although the body design was awesome, if shoot at the hip i want the screen inline and with the XH it felt weird to me to be looking of axis and lining up even with the lines on rear screen was an issue> im going to miss the XH viewfinder though and the dials and joysticks. Image quality from the XH2 sensor though so the XT5 was dam good, maybe 3rd or 3/3rds of a stop more noise but the details are there and I personally dont mind noise in my images as long as it's nice and even. 6400 was very usable. You've also tested A7RV's 61mp with G-Masters and Sigmas, could any APS-C lens can be 1,5 times sharper than those FF lenses in order to be able to resolve 40mp on an APS-C sensor? Good review, Dustin! Could you clarify something for me? Regarding highlight recovery - the people who advocate for "expose to the right" say that it is better to push your histogram as far as you can to the right without clipping. That is, they say it is actually better to overexpose the image and then bring the exposure down in post-processing. In your testing, when you overexpose and then have trouble recovering highlights, is it because there was clipping involved or is it simply reducing the exposure from a higher level that was still in the range of the sensor? (By the way, I shoot in raw. Do your highlight recovery tests only apply to JPEGs?)
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI Год назад
That's a little strange to me, as I would advise the opposite. Basically every camera I test is better at shadow recovery than it is highlight recovery. I shoot all of my tests in RAW, BTW.

I love having RF 14-35 F4L on my EOS R. This is an amazing lens. I bought R10 and use my RF 24-105 F4L on that body and carry 2 cameras (for landscape - hobby). However, RF 24-105 F4L has terrible flare resistance. B&H still has a sale for RF 70-200 F4L for $1500. I plan to put it on R10 and get that 1.6 zoom as a bonus. What I do with RF 25-105 F4L is either keep or or sell it. I considered RF 100-400, but I think i will be disappointed with the image quality. I am a pixel peeper who stares at zoomed in images on my 55 inch 4K OLED screen. I think it makes sense to pull at trigger on 70-200 F4L for the R10? At least quality wise I won't be disappointed and I would not have to worry about flare resistance since it is good on this lens. I rented and used RF 100-500 lens before. It is amazing. However, I can't take it with me on the plane and I fly a lot worldwide. That lens is too big and heavy and I can't justify the price for a hobby, which will be limited to road trips. RF 70-200 F4L that is then? Thanks !

I believe it's a common misconception that full-frame systems are more expensive than cropped-sensor ones. Lenses for APS-C and FF sensors that yield identical visual outcomes will virtually fall in the same cost and weight category. That is, the overall advantage boils down to the difference in the body price. And even this will vanish once you start growing your collection of glass.

I too appreciate your review Dustin. My head is about to explode trying to decide on an XT4 or XT5! I'm not an art photographer, I only have time for shooting jpeg. I've been quite happy with XT2, XF60mm macro and EF60 flash for documenting insects, herps etc. I heavily crop my images and am not interested in printing. Not a bird or large mammal photographer. Never video. While wading a stream, I slipped and went underwater with all my gear. XT2 and EF60 flash can't be salvaged, but Fuji is repairing the 60mm macro. I want the sharpest images possible for identification of subjects by myself or experts. Will the XT5 cropped image yield a noticeably sharper image with greater detail using the XF60 Macro or would you recommend I save myself money and look for a used XT3 or XT4? As for a macro lens, the XF60 is the only one that allows enough distance to subject, yet is light enough an old lady can carry it all day, so it's a keeper for me. I'd certainly appreciate input from you or any of your viewers who can offer some input.

The biggest advantage of the cameras from Sony (A6600) is always overlooked: In contrast to the X-T5, they can be operated largely with one hand. And you almost never have to take the camera off your eye to adjust settings. You can always keep an eye on the composition of the picture, because you are constantly looking through the viewfinder with your right eye while operating the camera with your right hand. The left eye looks past the camera. Either to maintain direct eye contact with the model or to observe the surroundings (street photography!). The left hand also remains free. It can hold a reflector or a flash. Or a bag... Or you can hold something with your left hand or pull yourself up while you take pictures. With a wrist strap and a lightweight lens (Samyang!), you can carry the A6600 for hours at a time. The hand grip is shaped to hang securely on three fingertips. All of this is not possible with the X-T5. Unfortunately, the A6600 is overpriced and outdated. Hopefully Sony will soon release an A6800 with the 26mp BSI sensor and an A6800r with 40mp. Some would like a "professional" A7000 with the body of the A7. Personally, I don't need such a camera, but it would certainly be an important statement from Sony.

Another great review - always getting the pros and cons across is your forte. There is great contention with this camera and it seems that some have missed the point of the XT5. It is a stills camera first and foremost. That is why there are differencies with the XH2...which is a full hybrid system. Stills photographers were baying for Fuji to return to stills photography first and they listened. The 3 way tilt screen was top of the list because the fully articulated screen just isn't suitable just for stills. The screen should be directly behind the lens not at the side. The CF card issue is not valid because which stills photographer - not wildlife or action - needs 19 fps? If people want that and are photographing fast moving subjects, that is what the XH2 is for. The XT5 is excellent for what is is designed for. We can't make comparisons and "I wish it had that" kind of thing when it isn't meant to do that!! I'm glad that you gave a more rounded view and acknowledged that this camera is not a hybrid and neither was it meant to be.

I spent 5 days in Maine having EOS R with 14-35 F4L and R10 with 24-105 F4L with about 4000 shots. EOS R is so superior to R10. R10 auto focus simply does not work well. I had more out of focus shots of my wife and animals than on the EOS R. Bokeh on R10 is atrocious. Don't even bother with F4 with either RF 24-105 L or 14-35 F4L. I tried both. Might as well do all portraits at F8. At least on EOS R, you know what you are getting with is clumsy focus point with a touch screen. At least it works when you manage to use it well. R10's "upgraded" focus system is unpredictable and unreliable. I went to Best Buy and tried out R7, it is even worse than R10. The white balance is completely off towards the green end. It gave me a completely different white balance than EOS R and R 10 with the same lens. At least R10 is consistent with it's white balance . The new joystick with the control ring on R7 around it is abysmal. I have small fingers and I constantly hit the ring when I was trying to use the joystick for focus point. Does Nintendo , Sony or Microsoft put a control ring around their gamepad analog joysticks? They don't and for a good reason.

I can’t understand why Fuji chose a 3.69 EVF for this camera knowing it was “photographer” first. I can only assume it’s an upgrade for XT2 and XT3 owners but the product cycle is only to solve a few issues at a time to keep with genuine camera updates on a 5 year timeline.
