I switched to the XT-5 after using Sony APSC and Full Frame because of the ergonomics (top dials), film simulation and also because my first analog cameras were Fuji. This is the best review/tutorial by far on YT and has helped me refine my initial settings and transition much faster especially using the function settings (something my Sony cameras were inferior in comparison. Whilst the grip was smaller I added a Smallrig leather half-body and hand/wrist leather starp. Fantastic review Maarten. Now subscribed and looking forward to more reviews.

I always appreciate the thorough overview you give! Though I already purchased the X-T5, so my opinions about it are already formed, it’s nice to learn about a couple of more obscure menu options to try. The only thing I’m slightly bummed about is the lack of support for a grip - I’d grown used to the form factor of my X-T3 with the grip attached, but so far the batteries are a huge improvement. For Christmas I got the metal hand grip and that adds just enough heft to achieve the balance I want with bigger lenses. I continue to be impressed with the general speed of the camera in operation over the X-T2/3. Not only the AF, which is noticeable, but the general responsiveness. It really does feel like the upgrade I’ve been waiting for and I’m eager to spend a lot more time shooting with it in the new year. Hope your 2023 is excellent, Maarten! If I can swing a trip to Toronto later in the year, I’d love to buy you a coffee! 😊 ☕️

Thank you for this. Your videos helped me settle on an X-S10 in 2020. But as my photography fire really took hold (it switched to high gear during lockdowns) I longed to have those dials. I hate having to dig around in menus, especially if I have a friend with me - even though they're always so patient - but I didn't want to add a lot of weight. I leapt on the X-T5 with joy, and I'm in love with it. Most of the time, I've chosen my settings before I've switched on the camera (a possibility I actually hadn't foreseen!) As a result, I'm learning to use Manual mode much more than my (usual) Aperture mode. I just love it. I guess I didn't really need this video, but I do enjoy your videos. :)

Got my X-T5 a week ago, this will now be my main body, with my X-T3 now pulling backup service. I haven’t really given it a full workout yet. I don’t really mind the loss of the battery grip, now that the new battery type brings better capacity, particularly as part of the attraction of mirrorless is weight reduction. Keep up the good work!
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron Год назад

Great video! This is a big help for all new users (and the old ones as well :-)). I was a little bit confused by your statement that's no new film simulations. They add nostalgic negative. I have X-T3 and now I bought T5. Great retro touch is that simulation;
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron Год назад
What I meant was that the 5th generation sensor and processor introduced with the X-H2S did not have any new film simulations. Nostalgic negative was introduced on the previous generation last year.

Excellent review. I have had my XT5 (from the XT4) for about a month and in that time it has performed well, including in the AF department, which gets some criticism. Only one aspect disappoints - the buffer size in continuous shooting with RAW, where it hits the buffer (pun intended!) earlier than on my XT4. Some people have said that for sports , just get the XH2s, but I prefer the XT style so will work around it.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron Год назад
Thanks for your kind words. I'm never sure why CH shooters want to use RAW. That provides a challenge for all except the most expensive cameras. The solution, if that's your requirement, is easy - the X-H2, which has a larger buffer or the X-H2S which offers even faster CH.

Thanks for another excellent review. My two newest Fuji cameras are the E3 and H1. I'm looking to upgrade, trying to decide what best meets my needs, the T5, H2 or H2s. It's a hard decision, but your reviews really help. Cost is not a factor. I keep getting tugged back to the classic controls of the T5. I want to do more video, but I don't think I need 8k and the different configurations. Video out of my H1 looks pretty darn good so I think I'll be happy with any one of the choices.

You mentioned that the EV dial cannot be locked... Here is a tip I picked up regarding my X100V -- I have no idea if this also applies to the X-T5 or any other Fuji cameras... the EV dial on top CAN be locked in the menus. The setting is at Menu>Tool icon>Button/Dial Setting>Lock>Function Selection>Exposure Compensation. You then also have to set Menu>Tool icon>Button/Dial Setting>Lock>Lock Setting to "Selected Function". This results in a yellow lock icon appearing on my LCD screen to let me know something is locked. Now, you (and I) may find that lock very inconvenient when you DO want to use the EV dial. In reading the X100V manual, I discovered a simple solution! If you press and hold the "Menu/OK" button for about 3 seconds, the "lock" is toggled on and off -- you get an acknowledgement of this on the LCD screen. So, voilá: EV dial locked, but easily unlocked when you need it. Once again, this works on my X100V. I have no idea about other cameras.

Great review, as always. I ordered the X-T5, "upgrading" from a X-T2 and returned it the next day. Was really turned off by it's built quality, it felt cheap in comparison to the X-T2. The buttons, doors, screen mechanism, overall weigh and assembly made it feel like a toy. I'm certain it's output and performance will be an upgrade but I couldn't get over that feeling. I'll wait for the new sensor on the body of the Xpro4 that hopefully won't have the same built and will be made in Japan.

Your speech is fluent light and very informative, it’s like singing a cappella!!!😂 I have a question about ibis that I hope you can answer. For panning shots, some lenses with OIS have a mode which reduces vertical shakes only. Does the XT 5 IBIS also has these mode? From these Portuguese “fotógrafo” I wish you all the best in 2023

Maarten, thank you for the comprehensive review. I don’t use video to any extent, so the description of all the different video modes is like a foreign language. However, the review for stills shooting was great. There are a few things that I find a bit annoying, and it may just take some getting used to, but I would be pleased to hear your comments. First, it seems too easy (at least for me) to accidentally turn the collars on both the SS and ISO dials and then wondering why the camera isn’t performing as expected (not realizing I am suddenly in video mode or HDR, etc.). Second, I have been surprised that on continuous shooting (in raw - CL or CH) the buffer fills after about 20 shots, and upgrading to fast cards made no difference. I do not remember that on my lower pixel X-T2.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron Год назад
Thanks, I appreciate your kind words. I've not gone into detail on the buffer yet, but understand it's smaller - partly of course, because the files are larger. I haven't turned the collars accidentally yet (and don't on the X-H1), but do sometimes (when I forget to lock) turn the shutter duration or ISO. I find the drive modes (video, burst, bracket, etc) to be pretty obvious - but yes, sometimes one shot gets off before I realize.

Thanks for the great review. I noted that you say there is no highlight option in the Photometry options. However can you get highlight protection with the Dynamic Range settings, of which there are two seemingly separate options. If you could get into this process in a future video I’d be grateful. While thinking about keeping you busy, can you also explore the multiple exposure options, which seem to involve some heavy duty image stacking. Many thanks and I apologize in advance if you have already addressed these subjects in another video.

Thanks. I found an interesting thing playing with the XT 5 for the first time. When set to BKT for the film simulator the camera also records 3 raw files with what ever exposure brackets you have set. I don’t know if this is because I have recorded jpeg on one card a raw on the other card. Or if this is a stetting that I set, by stumbling and bumbling around inside the menus. Anyway I have no objection because many times I bracket exposures anyway. The only drawback is that it takes up a lot of space. Thanks again,

Agreed. It depends on your preferences and needs. In reality, I would probably go with the X-H2 for its vastly superior video (and full size HDMI). I waited for the XT-5. I started with the XT-1, then the XT-2 and finally with a pair of XH-1s. I also use Nikon d800E and d850. I had expected that the XT-5 would give me something in between the d800 and the d850. No matter what I did I could honestly scarcely see a difference between the XT-5 and the XH-1. I used five of my 9 lenses. Tripod ,hand held, and optimal aperture nothing gave me better results. And in fact in too many cases the apparent sharpness was noticeably better with the XH-1 than the XT-5. I am a retired commercial photographer, former teacher, and article writer on photography. I would like to think I know more than a few things about photography. I tried changing the input sharpening, nothing that I did made the XT-5 come even close to my expectations. And as I said, my expectations were nothing more than for the XT-5 to match the Nikons. Ironically, the XH-1 rivals the full-frame Nikons in many ways. I print both at 20 x 30 inches and an observer would not be able to tell me what camera the image came from. Part of me is frustrated. Part of me is certain I just did something wrong. Part of me is mystified. The lenses that I used for the XT-5 test was the 27mm, 80mm macro, the 70-300mm, 90mm, and the 150-600mm. Is there anything that you found in processing that gave better results for the XT-5? By the way I had one article published in the CAPA magazine and I wrote numerous articles for the Victoria Camera Club magazine Close-Up.

For what it's worth, the XH-1 is a terribly underated powerhouse of a camera. (As was the X-T2 with the same sensor.) In most real-world use either of those are more than 90% of shooters could need for either photography OR video. I understand your frustration because you pay a lot of money to have the "latest and greatest" and want to feel and see the differences in no uncertain terms but most every new release these days is going to come down to questionably needed features and incremental upgrades. For me, I'd like the X-T5 because it has IBIS like the X-H1 yet it is smaller - and I have smaller hands. I love the form factor of the XT line. I do love landscape shooting so sharpness matters for me, but the high megapixel file size concerns me....let's face it, unless you are printing super larger with the best lens recommended for the higher megapixels and need to crop in so you can see an apple on a table in a window of an apartment skyrise shot half a mile away, nobody is ever going to notice such resolution in general applications. I've always thought, for myself, as general photography goes the X-T2 would have been ideal if only it had ibis. I do appreciate the 10bit video features in the T5, but here again, I could go on an on about "noticeable" differences over 8bit unless you are heavily color grading . I shoot professionally across many systems so I'm not "focus locked" on what I already own in fuji, in fact, in situations where auto focus is a priority I'd opt for Sony every day and there are situations where I need an articulated screen i.e the camera high overhead on a monopod for run and gun shooting they come in great for rough framing...but my go-to system and personal fav. is Fuji.

My last comment on this video, I felt that the 40 megapixels was excessive. I'm happy to be proven wrong when I make a statement and later on I feel that I was off to Mark. I am happy to admit it. So I was able to trial one of these cameras. And I immediately loved it. I still think 40 megapixels probably didn't really need to be that many maybe 33,34 would've been a good sweet spot but anyway 40 it is and away we go. What do I love about this camera? It takes damn good photos and at the end of the day when you cut everything back this is what we love about the camera. It takes fantastic photos and get you thinking about exposure because of the dials. The quick menu is fantastic on this camera, and while I'm still relatively new to the Fuji system, I did use one other fuji... Everything feels in the right spot and it feels like it was actually almost designed by a photographer. Someone who taken photos before there's only a couple little things that I don't like, but overall it is very very solid and good camera. Sometimes the auto focus can be a little bit finicky, but it's no dealbreaker for me and I've seen a lot of posts that say that it doesn't focus very well. I just needed to work out zone versus single.versus wide and just working out all the different focus modes, and once you find the one that you like and works for you, I would suggest that it will switch from different subject matters. Interestingly, I found for portraits that using the single dot setting actually worked really well. Create review to which is fair and balanced

Always the go to chanel for in depth information without leaving you brain dead!!! Thanks Maarten for another excellent review. I have been struggling to assign certain features to the Fn buttons and it is driving me crazy!! I cannot set Photometry to one button and either (or both) face/eye detect or subject detect. They are not greyed out when choosing from the 10 page menu, but they just don't work. I can assign the Photometry to an Fn button but I must have face/eye & subject detect both set to off in the main menu for it to work. What is the point of assigning features to Fn buttons if you can't select which of them you want that are in the menu choice. Defeats the object of having a quick button press to capture a shot that will now have long since disappeared if I have to turn off Photometry, dive into the menu to get the face/eye or subject detect features. Is this normal or is there a firmware issue?
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron Год назад
A pleasure to read your kind words. As mentioned, and as on other Fujifilm models, photometry is not available when subject/face/eye detect is on. According to Fujifilm, that's because those focus detection settings incorporate photometry for the subject. Yes, object detection must be off for photometry to be available, regardless of which method (menu or function key) you use. But, you don't have to turn photometry "off" (incidentally, that's not an option - so not sure what you mean), it's automatically disabled when you select face/eye or subject.
@NJM1948
@NJM1948 Год назад
@@MaartenHeilbron Thanks Maarten - I was more or less aware of that. My issue, really is about not being able to assign all 3 to Fn buttons and then be able to select one to use (knowing that the Photometry will be disabled is OK....I just can't get any one of the 3 to work when all are assigned a button) I understand that you can't use them together, but they should be selectable individually via an assigned Fn button so that we can use one of theme in isolation, thne select another when we want to use those

As soon as I assign face/eye detect and/or Subject detect whilst Photometry is assigned then none of the 3 display any thing when the buttons are pressed. I have not changed the main menu settings. Surely they should be available to select on or off? I hope this makes sense!! When you say you can't reproduce the issue....does that mean you can assign these buttons and they show information when the respective buttons are pressed? If th is is the case then I have a bug in my firmware!!!! UPDATE....I have now assigned Photometry to the up button on the D Pad and set both Face/Eye and Subject Detect as Q Menu selections. I can then select say Face/Eye from the Q Menu (Photometry doesn't work when the up d pad is pressed) then when I deselect Face/Eye in Q Menu (turn off) then Photometry works again pressing the D Pad up button!!!! Looks like this is the best I can get!!
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron Год назад
Still not following. By default on the X-T5, photometry is assigned to the top of the D pad. When I use that to make a photometry selection (like spot), I see that spot is selected (lower left beside exposure mode). When I press the default face/eye key (beside the shutter) it activates face/eye and resets the photometry icon to multi.

You don't seem to appreciate the huge advantage in-camera processing gives us over post. When working in the field one does not always have access to LR or PS. So if you intend to use the high resolution the X-T5 sensor offers for cropping anyway, why not use in-camera processing like digital zoom all the time? You can then compose much more easily and publish right away in the field. The final IQ is the same and it allows you to really take advantage of fast and small APS-C lenses without the need to carry large and expensive telephotos.

You know, to me the separate dials for aperture and shutter speed on fuji cameras seems to be a bunch of advertising hype. Most cameras have separate dials for aperture and shutter speed. They are usually located on the front and back near the shutter button. Some cameras even let you switch them. They are also easily accessed while you are holding the camera up and looking through the EVF. If the fuji system came first and then the dials by the shutter button, everyone would be praising the more ergonomic system of the dials front and rear near the shutter button. But now reviewers praise the top mounted dials that have to be set holding the camera down in front of you. Also, they only go in full stops. The other buttons can go in 1/3 stops, a much better system. But reviewers have to fall into the trap of praising the fuji system. I definitely prefer the 1/3 stop programmable buttons. Look at what fuji puts on their GFX system cameras. By the way, on the GFX cameras they use Contrast Detect Autofocus. I never hear anyone complain about that. But when Panasonic uses it, let the uproar begin.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron Год назад
You seem to have missed the fundamental advantage of this approach. And it is not used on all Fujifilm models. Nor are the settings limited to full stop increments. With a PASM camera, you must first decide which settings you want the camera to control, and then select that from the PASM dial. Only then can you make the adjustment you like. With this system, you adjust the setting you want to control, then when you want to automate it, set it back to A. And there's no guessing or remembering which is which, as the physical dials provide the affordance cues. Then you have invented and imagined that mounting the controls on top is an issue - it's not, they are as easily accessed as dials, and have the advantage of being labelled, so that the setting is easily viewed and set without reference to the screen or viewfinder. While I realize this approach is not for everyone, I, for one, appreciate it and feel, as I said in the video, that it's Fufifilm's super power. If you are an experienced photographer, the value of the system quickly becomes apparent. I suspect that if you were to spend a few days with the X-T5, you'd be a fan too.

On the X-T series, you can set aperture to “A”, shutter to “S”, ISO to “S”, and exposure comp to “S” and as a result each of those will become available on the dials on the front near the shutter button and on the back (a little click on those dials lets you switch between which is being controlled if more than 2). And of course that’s configurable. So the X-T series has all the usability options of the PASM style PLUS the more physical dials on top/lens if the photographer prefers it that way. We really have the best of both worlds at our fingertips.
