FUJIFILM XF 70-300 vs FUJIFILM XF 100-400, Image quality compared and autofocus compared. In this third episode we look at the incredible Fuji XF 100-400 and it's little brother the Fuji XF 70-300. The Fuji 70-300 is a half a stop faster at f4 vs the Fuji 100-400 which is a f4.5 and the Fuji 100-400 is longer with a max focal length of 400. It's also huge and heavy which the Fuji XF 70-300 is not weighing in at about the same amount as the Fuji XF 55-200. But they have a lot in common! They both WR weather resistant lenses, both have a focus limiting switch, both have barrel lock, and both have OIS. Pretty great for a $800 lens vs a $1900 lens.

Great reviews on this lens Kirk. I’ve been a Fuji shooter since they released the X-T1 but the longest lens I’ve owned is the 16-55mm f/2.8 Over the past couple of years I’ve developed an interest in aviation photography and to a lesser extent wildlife, however I’ve felt that Fujifilm were lacking an affordable lens that could scratch that itch for me, until now. After watching your reviews I’ve decided the 70-300mm fits me needs perfectly and I’m offloading my rarely used 56mm f/1.2 and old 18-55mm and putting the funds towards the 70-300mm. Can’t wait to see it on my X-S10. It is not so cheap here in Australia , around $1400 AUD. Thanks again Kirk for the great Fuji content.

Hello from Maine! Thanks so much! I currently own the 100-400 and I have to admit that after shooting a canon 100-400 and a Sony 100-400 I was disappointed in the Fuji version. I did recently get the Fujinon 200m prime which I love, but the weight will prevent me from wanting to use it as a hiking/walking lens. I love shooting wildlife, birds, landscape and I shoot portraits as my profession. I’m considering selling my 100-400 and picking up this lens as a replacement....I’m also now following you on IG!

Hi Nancy I was just up your way scouting for my June workshop up there. I used the 70-300 quite a bit. It’s a nice sharp lens. I used to be a hard core Canon guy for about 40 years. I used the 100-400 often and quite frankly found the Fuji version to be on par with the Canon version. For hiking this 70-300 is a great lens. It’s as light as the 55-200 and only marginally larger. Thanks for watching

I couldn't wait to watch this. I love my 100-400mm but I have not taken the 70-300mm off my X-T3 since I got it (other than to compare to the 100-400 a bit). yesterday i was using the 70-300mm with the 1.4xTC and saw a Cardinal on a branch close by (maybe 25 feet from my deck). I took several shots at 300mm (420mm with the TC/ISO 800/ 1/200 at f8) and I was blown away---tack sharp, great colors. Kurt, I agree with everything you've experienced so far and the weight difference even with the 1.4TC is huge. My only wish so far is that the manual focus ring had a little more resistance like the 100-400mm. Thanks as always!!!

I’ve ordered the 70-300 and the 1.4x teleconverter though the lens is out of stock at the moment. I love, love, love my 55-200 - it’s crazy sharp - but for birds and wildlife it’s just a bit short and I’m often forced to crop more than I’d prefer. I’m selling it to a friend who is looking for a lightweight all around tele zoom, and it’s perfect for that. Thanks for all of the 70-300 videos, Kirk. Perhaps my eyes were fooling me, but the 70-300 looked slightly sharper at 300 mm as compared to the 100-400. I was also pleased to see the results with the 1.4x TC wide open; stunning really! Thanks for this - I've got the 100-400 but to me it looked like the 70-300 had a slight edge with image quality. I think it will be very popular though because the price point is low and the lens is relatively light. Fuji do seem to have an ethos that image quality is king so even when they're using cheaper components, the optical quality is to the same high standard of their more expensive lenses.

I own XF100-400 since 2018 and last year when travelling to my home country wanted to have something lighter. Yes, it is redundant but got a XF70-300 thanks to your video Was thinking since some months if to sell off XF100-400. It was a bright sunny day without much haze and went on to do a comparison at various focal lengths as you did. There is a bit more of contrast with XF100-400,else both seemed same. I think I'd keep both simply for the reach of XF100-400 and portability with comparable results for XF70-300. XF70-300 is more than capable and it proved in my walk in nearby park shooting some birds, flowers and my wifey. Sharp, beautiful colors and I remembered my SONY SAL70300G when I used SONY DSLR before switching to Fuji several years ago. But of course Fuji JPEGs - no work needed on the shots while SONY needed work on LR.

@@KirkWilliamsonphotography I don't make any money out of photography (electrical engineer by profession). So again the mind is getting confused if to keep 100-400. Have a Fuji XS1 for the reach of 600mm. So???? Had I not got that Fuji XS-1 from 2012 I'd not have moved to Fuji camp from Sony. A wonderful bridge camera with 600mm reach (in 35mm terms), super sharp images, excellent colours. Shooting birds, butterflies, dragonflies, fruits, flowers that don't "flee" is as good as any APSC. Tracking AF performance cannot match current crop of cameras though or DSLR of it's days. Got about $200 for a 9 year old battered Canon Powershot S45 on a trade-in for XS-1 and couldn't resist.

I tell you I love using the 50-140 with the 1.4x for short field sports like softball or Little League but it’s only a 294 so only around 300mm. I’m hoping I can use this 70-300 for the same type of work but it really has issues with zooming while using continuous AF. It’s to bad the 50-140 is not a 70-200 f2.8 so in FF terms a 105-300 then with the 1.4 a 420 f4 on the long end. So really for hiking and travel the 50-140 and 1.4 much to heavy. But for certain things awesome lens and TC.

Kirk-thanks for these reviews. Question...for portraits would you stick with the 50-140 or the 70-300? I know there is a difference in aperture. Since I can only pick one your input would be appreciated. Thank you!

Gary if you do a lot of portrait work I would go with the 50-140 it's a beautiful lens for that purpose. Shooting at 2.8 makes a big difference for knocking out the background. The 70-300 is a nice lens but I look at it as a travel, hiking, walk around lens a do everything type of lens.The 50-140 is, well, a beautiful internal zoom lens much like the Canon, Nikon, and Sony 70-200 f 2.8 lenses that pros use for portrait work.

@@KirkWilliamsonphotography Thanks Kirk. I just needed some re-enforcement on my thoughts. While I Lovre the idea of focal reach, I want to focus on portrait work in my retirement. Appreciate your reply. Keep making vids!

Surprised to see there’s no difference between the 2 lenses!! I’m gona buy the 2x teleconverter and stick it on the 70-300mm to get that extra reach!! Great review 👍

I've also heard from several reviewers that the 2x teleconverter degrades image quality noticeably more than the 1.4x, so just beware of that.

Has anyone been able to compare the autofocus performance for action (like birds in flight) of the 70-300 with 1.4TC vs the 100-400 ?

I have both of the lens you tested and have done my own testing similar to your process with similar results. One interesting thing I found was that the 2X converter produced better results with the 70-300MM than the 100-400MM lens. Anyone else observe this? Kind of a mystery to me.

Nice overview Kirk. That 70-300mm lens look awesome value for money. It even looks sharp with that 1.4 TC which is good to know. The AF looks very snappy too, great for bird photography I reckon :-)

Any idea how the 70-300 at 400mm with the 1.4x teleconverter compares to the 100-400 at 400mm *without* the teleconverter?

If only the 70-300 were available to buy new, used, or refurbished! I'd buy a used one in a heartbeat even if it was scuffed up a bit but the glass was in top shape. Leaning towards the affordable and packable 55-200 or the costly 100-400. I have a 16-80 which I love but want more reach. The 100-400 has the reach and weather sealing I want but the 55-200 has the price. Despite the 100-400 being quite large I'm not as turned off by it as I originally was. It's superior reach and weather-sealing is king! I'd be nervous with the 55-200 and it's lack of weather sealing. Can capture some great pics on misty/wet days. Options options...

Just finished a one week rental of the 70-300. I sold my 50-140 and I'm buying one asap! Light weight, (I will actually take it out for a walk) Image quality, autofocus, I shot my Jack Russell Terrier running full speed towards me and it got 9 of 10 in focus! I will miss my 50-140 for lower light but I can always use flash!

Why would one still want a 100-400? The quality of images looks the same if not better with the 70-300. The extra 100?
@KirkWilliamsonphotography
@KirkWilliamsonphotography 3 года назад
Well it really depends on what you are using it for. I shoot a bunch of sports for our local paper and it’s a superior lens for that. For moon rises I use it exclusively with or without the 1.4 x for the compression with lighthouses etc. So for certain things its the choice but for carrying in a backpack hiking for a landscape location or traveling the 70-300 is the lens for me. Basically if I’m working out of my trunk then the 100-400 comes along for the ride.
@Corné-o6h
@Corné-o6h 3 года назад
@@KirkWilliamsonphotography So if the 100-400 would be as compact you would go for that I suppose because of it's long range? I actually own the 100-400 but after seeing some reviews get the idea I bought the wrong lens. As you mentioned it is not very comfortable carrying it on a hike, that's when I take my 55-200, but decrease in range. Still not an easy choice. Pretty happy with the results of the 100-400 though, so best enjoy that as long as I stick with it. Thanks for uploading and your quick response.

Sounds about right. Better deals on the 100-400 used like mine for $950. The 70-300 is awesome for the backpack and the 100-400 for me is for shooting field sports and out of the trunk landscape work.
