Hi Gordon, How would you say IQ of this lens compares to the XF 8-16 zoom @ 8mm? Many thanks!
@cameralabs

Good question, I'd like to compare them. But this is a budget lens vs the 8-16 which is high-end.
@gordonbunker3272
@gordonbunker3272 Год назад
@@cameralabs It would be an interesting comparison given how different they are optically. In any event, I have an 8mm on pre-order... that it's on Fuji's list of lenses able to fully take advantage of the 40mp sensor I think it will be sharp enough! Cheers, GB
@kwangc6720
@kwangc6720 Год назад
How do you find the edge sharpness of this lens? Finally got my hands on the 8mm. I was so looking forward to it but I am disappointed. The image corners exhibit Fujifilm's trademark blurring. I thought the 10-24mm is somewhat bad at the corners but this 8mm is no better or even worse. I totally did not expect it from a prime lens. At f/3.5, the corner softness is very noticeable and unacceptable if zoomed in. At f/5.6-f/8, the softness improved but only slightly.

@@cameralabs Id like some real estate equipment to add to my quiver. I just finished watching the 10-24 v 8-16 video and decided the 8-16 was the one to get. Will wait for your review but this is less than half the price and just as wide. Actually, for what it's worth, I bought the 50mm F1.0 based on your review and wasn't disappointed.

I don't quite understand who this lens is for.. it seems a bit too wide with the corner softness/distortion for architecture and a slow F3.5 means no object/background separation and really not enough light for nightscapes or low light photography/videography. At F5.25 full frame equivalent you are close to iPhone territory (which is around F6.2 full frame equiv). I recently upgraded from the Samyang 12mm F2 to the Viltrox 13mm F1.4 and in low light especially it is a monumental difference. I appreciate there is a big focal length difference, but compared to samples from this 8mm I seem to be getting significantly better results with the Viltrox.
@stefan33uk
@stefan33uk Год назад
Nightscapes are done on a tripod at small apertures so it would be good for those, including long exposures. Would like to see the sun stars
@alexauga
@alexauga Год назад
Light transmission doesn’t change based on sensor size and at such a wide focal length background separation would be negligible between this and a 35mm sensor at its equivalent angle of view. I think it’s a great lens for landscape and architecture photography and vlogging - super compact and easy to travel with, I would be using this stopped down around f8 in most use cases for photography. I own the 8-16mm which has been an absolute workhorse but it’s really impractical to travel with even with a hefty camera bag if you’re wanting to pack several lenses with you. This is a big W for me 👌
@DigiDriftZone
@DigiDriftZone Год назад
@@stefan33uk Sorry, I mean ones where you want to capture the milky way, you are limited to around 30s exposure before the earth rotates. Even at F2 you can get reasonable results but F1.4 helps a lot. F3.5 is unusable.
@DigiDriftZone
@DigiDriftZone Год назад
@@alexauga Not sure if you meant to reply to another comment? - I wasn't talking about sensor size :) Background separation is incredible on the Viltrox 13m F1.4, even on the Samyang 12mm F2. If you're used to F4 wide lenses, I can understand how you get to this conclusion, but here's an example of the 13mm F1.4 in low light: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-COmQ8sFHL-c.html When you had your 8-16mm, were you using it at 8mm a lot? - maybe it's just me but the corners look very distorted/blurry to me on this lens.
@alexauga
@alexauga Год назад
@@DigiDriftZone I meant that it’s not true that this F3.5 lens is equivalent to an F5.2 on 35mm sensor, the f stop is the same regardless of whichever sensor is behind the camera because it’s a physical measurement, so the light gathering ability of this lens would be the same on a full frame sensor if that makes sense. I get that some people use this to illustrate the perceived difference in depth of field equivalence between the sensor sizes but at these ultra wide focal lengths I do not think there would be any real world noticeable difference (or very minimal) in depth of field between this lens and a 12mm lens on a 35mm sensor. The 8-16mm definitely has distortion at 8mm however I have found it very easy to correct in post. I guess all lenses will have compromises to strike a balance between size, image quality, etc. I will say it’s hands down the best UWA zoom I’ve ever used across any system, previously I had spent a lot of time with the Nikkor 12-24mm (F mount) and the 8-16mm is a step up in every aspect IMO. If this lens can deliver similar IQ to the 8-16mm then I think it’ll be a winner 😀

To my opinion, this is hugely overpriced, slow ultrawide prime lens. At about 500$ it would be somehow worth buying, but 800$? Ok, the sacrifice of 2mm at a wide end is significant, but the price and versatility of the 10-24 zoom is much more attractive
