Magnus Carlsen vs Wesley So
FIDE World Fischer Random Chess Championship (2019),
NOR, rd 4, Nov-1
[FEN "rknbbqnr/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/RKNBBQNR w HAha - 0 1"]
Follow games live here chess24.com/en...
The first official FIDE World Fischer Random Chess Championship is taking place from October 27 to November 2 in the Henie Onstad Art Center in Høvikodden, just outside the Norwegian capital of Oslo. The three online qualifiers Fabiano Caruana, Wesley So and Ian Nepomniachtchi join the unofficial Chess960 World Champion Magnus Carlsen in the semi-finals. A 3rd place match will be played alongside the final. The top prize is $125,000, with $75,000 for the runner-up, $50,000 for 3rd and $40,000 for 4th.
Each match consists of 12 games at three different time controls. For the first four slow games the players have 45 minutes for 40 moves then 15 minutes to the end of the game, but no increment. There are 3 points for a win and 1.5 for a draw. Then there are four 15-min games with a 2-second increment, with 2 points for a win. Finally there are four 3+2 blitz games, with normal scoring. If the match is tied a 5 vs 4 Armageddon game will be played. Official website: www.frchess.com

This is the REAL CHESS. Just beautiful chaos that you need to solve by pure tactics and creative strategies. Thats why Fischer invented this because he was fed up with memorized lines and opening theories that would lead to boring, drawish games. While this variant will keep you at the edge of your seat starting from move one. Fire on the board already!

What's your opinion of WFRCC lowered time control from classical 2019 to rapid 2022 AND calling 2022 WFRCC as 2nd WFRCC instead of 1st rapid WFRCC? How was it not a conspiracy against Wesley So to get Hikaru or Magnus as WC?

That's why Fischer Random is awesome, you can't play memorized openings and memorized games, you have to find moves 'over the board'. Fischer Random has put new life to chess.

Americans win in chess960, where chess talent is better measured: 2019 FIDE - Wesley So 2020 St Louis - Hikaru (tied with Magnus since no tiebreaks) 2021 St Louis - Leinier 2022 St Louis - Fabi (wins on tiebreaks) Also there's always a European runner-up 2019 - magnus 2020 - Levon 2021 - MVL 2022 - Alireza (loses on tiebreaks) Note: I'm using a different definition of talent. The usual definition of talent is that it's the same as strength. Here, Fischer's definition is that talent is how strong you are assuming there are no openings or assuming everyone is equal in openings. Strength is a combination of opening theory and talent. So eg Magnus is better than Nepo and Wesley, but Nepo and Wesley are more talented than Magnus: Wesley because won 2019 Nepo because - well this is just my opinion I notice Nepo had a higher score than Magnus in 2019 semi finals and finals. Also consider if the semi finals and finals were reversed: Nepo would be top 2.

@Frank Olsen Oh nice, that is very interesting. How can his volatility be high and his win rate be so consistent at an elite level in a game like chess, that's got a "solved" meta-game? What attributes are volatile? I think he likely plays situationally, based on theory, rather than via formulas like well known lines. That's kind of the same as intuition. I'm very curious to find out about this volatility though

Carlsen confidence got shaken when he lost his second game against So, and that was because he made some (two) mistakes: 1. liquidate the center and 2. misplaced his knight. probably because he was tired. Had he tried to keep playing solid strong chess he would have equal chances as So. But he wrongly conceded that he should avoid complications and tactics and rather play positional in game 3 (french) but that was a mistake. And then again he tried to go all in in game 4 as he was trailing in the score, which again was a bad decision. That being said , So deserves his wins, he is playing solid chess both tactically and positionally. So, congratulations to So and don't forget that he is a very nice and HUMBLE person.

Again Fischer was right. The random variation, for humans, eliminates so much of what makes chess boring - the reliance on memory. If Magnus had succeeded with 1.) a4, he would have been called a genius! Instead, Mr. So saw his opportunity (cue the heart rate) and refuted the speculative pawn advance. There was no memorization to rely on, just imagination, inspiration, and calculation. Heck, I could even watch a Fischer random tournament! CONGRATS to Wesley So!

960 chess is the future. It shows the closest to true skill a player can have. I can't imagine anyone being able to distinguish 960 positions to learn the openings to and then be able to figure out, which position is presented in front of them rendering memorization useless. Soon classical chess will have only 1 large tournament a year and everyone will compete in the random piece placement chess in all the other tournaments.

7:56 Blunder from Magnus. Black can go Nd2+ White loses the Queen. If Kb2... Nc4+ and wins the queen. If Ka2... Bf7+. Even if white goes Nd5... Bxd5... Pc4...Bxc4... then Bb3...Bxb3... again white queen will be lost.

Surprising to hear reference to black's "Queenside" given that this FR960-arrangement has the King *waaaay* over to the left, and a similar analogous misplacement of Queen starting the game conspicuously on the traditional "Kingside". Thoughts?
