Keep it up. Nice comparison. My system is the titanium Caldera with the Toaks Siphon stove. That stove lets me easily pour unused fuel back in the bottle. I'm nut sure what pot I have (16 oz) but the whole system including fuel, lighter and inferno insert, is the size of a Gatorade bottle. I use wood instead of alcohol about half the time. The inferno really cuts down the smoke and soot. Thanks

Thanks Mark. I suspected that would be the case, but it is nice to know for sure. All stove tests should be done with wind. Maybe a fan in the shop to simulate wind.

I would conclude that the TD cone is much better at trapping heat, is also heavier and bulkier, and the two stoves are comparable. 7:00 and 7:15 for the TD is easily within the error margin of this test, and can be counted as equal. Ditto for 10:00 and 8:50 for the Zelph. That's about 11% difference, which I think is within the margin of error. The difference in the two cones is larger, and significant, *_if you think it is._* Just as the size and weight difference is significant *_if you think it is._* The fact that one boils water faster is not any more significant than the fact that the other is more compact. It depends on what each individual hiker prefers. Personally, I might think if one system gave a 10 minute boil and the other a 3.5 minute boil, that might be significant. Since one gives a 7 minute boil and the other a 10 minute boil, I don't personally see that as a big deal. Sitting here on my couch, I don't see a big deal over a half-ounce weight difference either. (Day three on the trail, maybe moreso.) But I do see a big deal in the packability of the two. I'd be interested in knowing how much fuel each used to bring that boil. That directly affects how much fuel I have to pack around for a few days, and could mean the difference between carrying a 4 oz bottle or an 8 oz bottle for the same trip.

Thanks, interesting demo. I would think that the full Caldera cone would be the consistent winner because it engulfs the entire vessel holding water. Do you also have a total burn to exhaustion time demo with each system? Again, I think with the efficiency of the complete coverage of the full cone, it should be the winner. It will be interesting to see the results. Is a few minutes of boil time as significant a factor if the total fuel consumption is the same?

Hey Mark, thanks for the good review. I was about to pull the trigger on the caldera cone when I decided to check out a couple reviews. Interesting results with your comparison test. Sounds like maybe the big Caldera cone is suffocating the 12-10 stove a little bit. I would be interested to know how it does with a bit more breathability.

That Trail Designs cone is looking is looking like it could be the one. I have a long time to wait until the final verdict though. Great idea on this series.

Good test. Results as one would expect but I'll take the ability of the Zelph cone to store in the pot anyday over the pack separate caldera.

Awesome comparison. I just built an aluminum cone similar to the sidewinder with a hole pattern more like the full cone to use with an esbit stove. Hoping to test it out this weekend.

Very timely for me. I have been debating these two setups. I started leaning towards the side winder setup with the kojin stove, so I ‘ll be eagerly awaiting your next video.

The results are what I would expect. But the stove with the trail design is mor efficet at producing heat as it boiled water 2 minutes faster. Or there has to be other thing in play to account for the fasted boil time. You are also confirming 12oz H2O is the limit for 1oz EtOH. Thanks.

So the Zelph cone system doesn’t block the wind from the pots sided and the wind is actually slowing the pots ability to heat the water?

does the mini cone fit inside the 550 when you pack it up?
