I am very excited about this new project, this is the first time I am building a full carbon surfboard using the vacuum bag technique.
This board should be super light, strong, responsive, and durable but also very expensive, when I am done building this board I will let you know about the costs and the pros and cons.
This is a performance shortboard, 6'2 X 20" X 2 5/8" with 3LB core, the next one will be a 2LB core that will be even lighter.
In this video, I sanded the laps and prepared the board for the hot coat. it turned out great and the deck got a great vacuum so the results were great.
The hot coat went smooth as well, sanding was real easy as the surface was so smooth and almost no bumps and lumps.
I ended up using a matt clear coat because it has a more professional look and I love it! the board ended up at 2.6KG - amazing!

Welcome to my channel
My name is Koby and I am a surfboard shaper.
For the last 7 years, I shape and build surfboards in my small workshop and now I will expand into more great projects using an Epoxy resin such as River tables, woodworking, and more. I will upload surfboard building tutorials, shaping tools reviews, and great tips about working with epoxy resin art.
All my boards are made from EPS and epoxy resin and I like to go crazy with my resin art! I will do swirls using tints and pigments, cloth inlays, weird shapes, and more.
I can talk about surfboards all day, so feel free to ask me any questions you may have and I will do my very best to answer them in the best way possible

What a mission, great to get jobs like this done and learn so much in the process. The learning curve from bottom side to deck was obvious, imagine after doing 5 of them! Well done man!

Looks great, I'd love a board just like that. If you don't mind, a few of points: I noticed a slight 'flouring' of the epoxy on the finish coat, so if you can get it, use a crystal epoxy hardener like the West 207 hardener in conjunction with their 105 resin, this gives a very clear finish. There were also issues with the edges of the peel-ply. A borrowed second set of hands might be the solution to get it to lay perfectly flat in one go. And finally, working with epoxy, especially over time will damage your health unless you use really good protection. I'm not sure if that mask you use is good enough. Look into a 3M 6503QL mask with A2 Organic vapor filters as well as P3 particulate filters over them. That should keep you going for longer :) Edit: I see in your most recent video you have one of those masks up on the wall ;)

Wow. A lot of work for carbon fibre. And you can see every bit of imperfection in the end finish. Good for first time, but may take you a few iterations to get a complete perfect finish with smooth color finish. It it really worth it after you take into consideration the effort and additional cost of materials? How much weight are you saving? How much more in materials? And the most important, how does it ride compared with same board in normal glass + epoxy? Great video.
@kobymaymonsurfboards7320
@kobymaymonsurfboards7320 3 года назад
100% worth it Additional cost is X2 normal board Weight saved- 30% Small medium waves - this thing is unbelievable... so fast, it gives a unique felling under your feet, the lack of flexibility allowing you to manipulate the board... just great 🤙🏼
@foamhacker6396
@foamhacker6396 3 года назад
Very nice. Carbon fibre is not easy to work with but you nailed it. The spray at the end is smart especially on epoxy as it's very difficult to polish - do you find that it is a durable layer (acrylic spray?) or it chips off easily?
@kobymaymonsurfboards7320
@kobymaymonsurfboards7320 3 года назад
IT is NOT very durable, i am now getting a new one, much more durable and industrial 2 parts clear coat witch is water based. should provide durabbility and more profitional look.

Great work! Could you tell me your sanding process after the hot coat ? Something like 80- 120 then wet with 240 400 800? Thanks
@kobymaymonsurfboards7320
@kobymaymonsurfboards7320 2 года назад
Yes, but - 240 is NOT wet, 400 wet and it is not a must! Because i use the matte clean spray so there is no point going all the way to 800 or 1200. If you are going to do a gloss coat and no spray but natural shine then yes, all the way to 1500 wet 🙌🏽🏄🏻‍♂️

how did you deal with any wrinkling of the carbon on the rail, due to the vacbag bunching up? i am building 3 at the same time now, and all three have some of this wrinkling. it makes the hotcoat and sanding on the rail very hard.
@kobymaymonsurfboards7320
@kobymaymonsurfboards7320 3 года назад
I was working them with my hands when it wrapped the rails, also when laying the breather cloth I invested more time in it. My vacuum wasn’t so strong so maybe this is why 🤙🏼

What did you spray on it? Why is there a Blue haze? Is The carbon just enhancing the Blue dye in the resin?
@kobymaymonsurfboards7320
@kobymaymonsurfboards7320 3 года назад
This spray is matt clear coat, the blue haze is due to the carbon and epoxy under the lights, this is because i use a very good epoxy with UV (resin research).

Do you add anything to epoxy resin when doing hot coat to improve sandability/finish (as you would wax styrene with polyester resins?)

I add ADDITIVE F in my hot cote to make sanding easier and to prevent fish eyes, if i did a dark pigment in the laminating process i will not use ADDITIVE as it leaves clouds on the surface 🤙🏼

@kobymaymonsurfboards7320
@kobymaymonsurfboards7320 3 года назад
