I am very excited about this new project, this is the first time I am building a full carbon surfboard using the vacuum bag technique.
This board should be super light, strong, responsive, and durable but also very expensive, when I am done building this board I will let you know about the costs and the pros and cons.
This is a performance shortboard, 6'2 X 20" X 2 5/8" with 3LB core, the next one will be a 2LB core that will be even lighter.
In this video, I will be laminating the carbon fiber just the same as we do fiberglass only this time the board will go into the vacuum bag and will take all the air and execs resin out to have the lowest weight possible and a great bond between the board and core.

Welcome to my channel
My name is Koby and I am a surfboard shaper.
For the last 7 years, I shape and build surfboards in my small workshop and now I will expand into more great projects using an Epoxy resin such as River tables, woodworking, and more. I will upload surfboard building tutorials, shaping tools reviews, and great tips about working with epoxy resin art.
All my boards are made from EPS and epoxy resin and I like to go crazy with my resin art! I will do swirls using tints and pigments, cloth inlays, weird shapes, and more.
I can talk about surfboards all day, so feel free to ask me any questions you may have and I will do my very best to answer them in the best way possible

I am in the process of building a part, and it's around 5"x5", the peel-ply got stuck to it and I can't get it off. The fact that yours came off so smoothly even around the edges is amazing.

Did you notice any flattening or twisting of the rocker while under vacuum? I’ve done a few boards with vacuum infusion. They’ve all been stringerless, so I did a hand lay up of carbon on the rails before I put them in a bag to infuse them to prevent any warpage. Would be cool if I could skip that step...

Looks worthwhile! Would you consider using COLAN again, or mentioning specifics of the cloth in upcoming videos/add in the video description? I know you've answered people separately, already. What would you estimate the rough outlay for equipment was; pump, bag, and difference in expense for cloth? Your setup looks sweet!
@kobymaymonsurfboards7320
@kobymaymonsurfboards7320 3 года назад
Colan is great, never disappoints. I would say the total expenses was double the normal board, the pump is expensive but it was borrowed... if normal fiberglass cost 5$ meter the carbon cost 60$ and this the biggest difference 🤙🏼

Maybe rolling the dry peel ply onto a cardboard tube first and then unrolling it into the wet carbon? Or wetting up through the peel ply?
@kobymaymonsurfboards7320
@kobymaymonsurfboards7320 3 года назад
For sure will help to get better results but also to have better pump to hold it firmly against the carbon

@wardhagaman3139 3 года назад
@@kobymaymonsurfboards7320 most of those pumps should be able to pull 25” of mercury...should be enough, no? I wonder if you were getting too many leaks? I do smaller stuff like model airplane wings (so maybe easier for me) and I just use cheap $3 latex caulk and new poly drop cloth...no bag fittings or clips and there are no leaks that way. You just fold over the poly sheeting, lay the pvc hose in there and seal 3 sides with a caulking gun. Might be worth a try? Thanks for taking the time to post your videos...I really enjoyed them!

@@kobymaymonsurfboards7320 That's a very common weight to use. It looks like a plain weave, you might try using a 2x2 twill next time to give it that "traditional" carbon fiber look, plus it conforms to curves much better. Oh, and use a squeegee on the peel ply as well to avoid voids.

Thank you to show this process. At 4 mn 03 sd, you cut across the weave lap...are you obliged to do that because this make lose a lot of strengh in the rail acting as a beam?
@kobymaymonsurfboards7320
@kobymaymonsurfboards7320 3 года назад
I make sure that the 2 sides are sitting on top of the other, the cut is under the rail, I had to do that as the carbon doesn't like to wrap as normal fiberglass, I do not think that I lose any strength in the board..
@kamilacanau
@kamilacanau 3 года назад
@@kobymaymonsurfboards7320 Will you do the same kind of cut when doing deck bagging? I think it can be done if the upper cut is not in front of the lower one already done. Hi Koby! which resin did you use? i normally use Kwick Kick as you do with normal layups but for my upcoming vacbag boards i have bought some slow epoxy (not resin research but normal epoxy) to make sure i have a lot of time to work and that the excess resin will still come out of the cloth instead of already being to firm.

@@kobymaymonsurfboards7320 hi Koby, some research in converting, and consulting with experienced shapers learned me that 20kg/m3 is 1.25 lb EPS, which seems way too soft. 1.5lbs could be done but 2 lbs seems to be the consensus to be the minimum for a durable board, which would be 35 kg/m3. so i am selling this foam to someone who wants to do a sandwich construction

Not sure what you mean, it not just sucking the air out-it has a peel ply and a breather cloth on it, we sucking the air out to get the access resin out and to have the ultimate bond for the carbon to the foam, the result is super strong and light. the board turned out great, light, and strong but also with perfect glassing due to the vacuum bagging technique.
