It always amazes me that no matter what issue I have with my 850, I can always find a Robert video with the solution. This one is over 8 years old but I know how to deal with the blend doors on my MCC equipped 94.

I was watching this, hoping that you would go over why the HVAC system on my '97 850GLT is only blowing air from the dash vents and a little onto the windshield. No matter which way the center knob is turned, the air will not blow on the feet -- which is bad when it's really cold. But all you said about that control is it's a "whole 'nuther thing." How would this be fixed?

@Gordon302

Robert, not that I need to, but, would it be possible to upgrade an MCC to an ECC? In other words, did all models use the same wiring harness, regardless of MCC or ECC? Naturally of course, one would want to get an entire HVAC plastic box, complete with all of the electric motors, minus the blower motor. Junkyards like to charge you, ala carte. Still, even if somehow you did need a different dashboard wiring harness, considering that the dash is completely removed like that car that you were in, you'd just have to disconnect the wiring harness from the left side.

Great video. I have a 99 XC70. When i turn the heat on I get hot air blowing through all the vents on the left side of the car. From above the controls over. But none of the vents on the right side blow heat. It is only cold air that is blowing out of them. Any suggestions? Also is it normal for the a/c to come on whenever I put on the defrosters? thanks

Chances are, you have a bad vacuum line or elbow. Remove the glove box and look real close at the vacuum lines and connections. If you find one loose or damaged replace it and you will be good to go.

Hi Robert I have a question. We have a 99 VolvoV70 GLT. Our issue is that only our left hand side heat works, Also, when I set the dial to defrost my windshield it automatically sets the AC on. Do you have any idea? It is driving me crazy because my wife drives around with her right hand side all fogged up. Thank you and I hope you can help me again. Our first Volvo, my wife loves it, but man! it has been a pain in the ass since day one. Nothing but trouble, my 93 Mercury Villager which we own since 2007 has never let me down.
@RobertDIY
@RobertDIY 9 лет назад
+rayochapin Is the heat working a problem? Check the owners manual on the AC/Defrost thing. I'm pretty sure it is suppose to work like that.
@rayochapin
@rayochapin 9 лет назад
No! The heat working is not a problem, the problem I have is that cold air comes out of the right hand side and hot on the left side even though my AC is off. I will see if my wife has the owners manual somewhere. I don't remember if the car came with one. Thanks a lot.

This video is a gem Robert - thank you very much - a few questions - from what I understand the only way that outside air is getting in is through the chamber where the filter is supposed to be - so if I have something like an exhaust or gas smell in the cabin - that most likely means that I'll have excessive exhaust/gas smell outside of the car aswell? Because the smell must come with the air through that chamber? (given that I don't have any leaking doors or something like that) - Also - if there is ever a coolant leak on the floor - can you really get that properly cleaned up from the carpet and rubber carpet? isn't the floor and carpet always going to be contaminated - feels like you are always going to sit and inhale those coolant fumes - can't be good?
@RobertDIY
@RobertDIY 10 лет назад
It sounds like you either have a little oil leak that is burning off or an exhaust leak which is getting into the air intake. Yes air only comes in from that hole where the cabin air filter would go. Also, the cowl that goes across the windshield base has the air intakes in it. Those should NOT be blocked with leaves, etc. The cowl has a seal that will block most vapors from getting into the vent area. As for a heater core leak, yes you will have contaminated carpet padding/insulation. Not sure if the odor from the coolant is toxic or not but it is very hard to get it out. A lot of people tear the padding out and toss it. That's why it's good to replace those cores before they fail or have a massive leak.

Hi Robert, I think the damper motor (right next to the blower) of my 1996 Volvo 850 is not working. Even when I switched to REC mode, the fresh air keeps coming into the cabin. Have you ever try fixing or replacing the damper motor? Is it hard to fix? Thanks a lot!! Oakey
@RobertDIY
@RobertDIY 10 лет назад
Yes I have replaced those motors before. It is hard getting to the 2 screws that secure them but once you do, no problem. After replacement you are suppose to make the system program them. You will have to Google for those instructions.

Hey Robert, I really appreciate all of your videos. Just fixed my voltage regulator with much help from your video. I have another issue that maybe you know where to direct me to. The other night I pulled in to my driveway and turned my heater off as soon as I did, a whole bunch of steam poured out from under my hood. A LOT of steam! I checked for leaks and couldn't find anything. I drove it a little while after for 30 minutes-no problem. Temp is fine, coolant level fine, no problems. Except: I am now hearing a hissing sound under my passenger dash that continues for a few seconds even after I shut the engine off. Any idea of what this might be?

My 97 V70 ventilation control doesn't direct the air according to the control dial setting. I removed the glovebox and observed the servo motor while selecting different settings on the dial. The servo motor didn't move. Then removed the servo motor and repeated the selection of different settings. The motor moved in the clockwise direction each time I changed the setting, It never reversed. What do you think would cause that?
@RobertDIY
@RobertDIY 9 лет назад
Twig Not sure which motor you have loose but maybe it has to reset once it gets to an end and that can't happen when it's removed.
@twig3288
@twig3288 9 лет назад
+Robert DIY It's the actuator located on the left side of the central air box and it turns a small plastic disk which has irregular spiral channels which move the pins on the control levers which in turn control the flaps inside the airbox controlling the airflow to face, feet or screen. Have you ever replaced one of these?

Robert, I have removed the recirculation motor on my 94 850 and can't get it open to see about fixing it. The motor was making a clicking noise whenever I turned off the a/c recirculation button and the intermediate arm had come off. The arm is not broken, just fallen off. I know I will probably have to buy a new motor but I want to take a shot at fixing it first. Any hints about getting it open? Thanks for all of your help. I couldn't afford to keep this car if it wasn't for all of your videos.

Mine has 2 tabs on the long sides and 1 tab each on the 2 short sides (the box is a rectangle) but no screws that I see. I keep trying to push the tabs down with screwdrivers and wedge the sides open but the top still doesn't move. Guess I'll just keep trying until I break it. Would you recommend one from the junkyard ? Thanks!

Hi Robert, I replaced my heater since I had coolent leak. now when I try to use the fresh air aka rec switch it wont throw in any fresh air instead it blows hot super hot air. Even if I have the air off and close the air vents I can still feel that hot air through my legs and through the air vents. Any hints on what it can be ? Also AC problem I injected new AC but did not work at all I turn it on and all I hear is a clicking noise and will just throw super hot air.

When you say "I replaced the heater", what exactly does that mean? It sounds like the motors that control the flappers are bad and are not closing off the heat chamber. Have you watched the "Full Flow Heater System" video?

Hi Robert. Question; On my 1995 850 my intermediate lever between the air actuated flap motor and the flap arm broke. It's only a $7 part but how would I know if the motor itself has a problem? when I set the rec control to the fresh air setting, I get a click noise from the motor even though right now it is not connected to the flap. when I set the rec switch to recirculate, I no longer get a click out of the flap motor. My concern is that the flap motor does not know when to stop turning forward on the fresh air side and that's what may have caused the intermediate lever to fail and snap. please advise. Thank You
@RobertDIY
