Warmer days have arrived and we have come out of hibernation here with spring arriving in south west France. Days like this call for one thing only; a master garden plan for our French garden. We have learned from our mistakes of the past, and are ready to create a beautiful, integrated French garden with beautiful flowers, vegetables and herbs all growing together harmoniously. This is going to be a big challenge but one that will reward us many times over. Come with us as we give you a tour of the current garden and show you our plans for the French garden of our dreams.

As someone who has had the pleasure of sampling the veggies you have harvested from your potager in the past, I can irrefutably acknowledge that you both managed to produce the very best runner beans I have had the pleasure of eating. And the tomatoes, courgettes, and chillies!

It'll be great to watch your garden develop, this is our first full year in Charente - and have over the winter been building our garden/potager - so it'll be interesting to see how our stuff grows in comparison to ours and hopefully pick up a few tips😊

Those are good ideas to do a mixed potager/flower garden around a seating area. We moved our best flowers up close to the house and included our herbs and tomatoes and they are so much better tended. Also - Never regret removing a tree which is not working for you! Over time trees need to be replaced or moved. PS - the mini-mini digger is a marvel.

Thank you so much for your comment, sometimes it's really reassuring to hear from an outside source that "it's ok" - I do always feel guilty about taking down a tree, I just make sure I replace it with more! Can't wait to have our vegetables closer to the house, I'm so glad to hear that the concept worked for you (and your veggies!)

We had a clump of bamboo where I grew up. The center of it had a space cleared out--maybe 6' x6'. We called it 'the bamboo fort'. We had lots of fun playing army games in there! Love your garden plan!

That sounds amazing. 😻 The kids have actually found a bunch of old planks and started their very own teepee in the middle of the bamboo. They spend hours down there in their own little world!

There are some plants ( flowers too) that will actually help with harmful insects. Potato vines will discourage aphids and marigolds are also beneficial. Love your vlogs, so happy I found you❤️

I’m so excited about your garden plans, they’re lovely. It shows that it does pay to live in a place for a while. You get a good feel for all the seasons, how the existing plants and trees cohabit and how best your garden can blend with your growing family. Love the way you’ve embraced the nettles. Peter Proctor’s book ‘Grasp the Nettle’ says the same as you at heart. And the bamboo is so cool… We went to a wedding in Tauranga where the venue was surrounded by a forest of tall majestic bamboo, it was mesmerising. I can imagine how enchanting it is for your children with many hours playing and that wonderful feeling of losing all track of time in their own magic world. That digger….ppppffff….nicely closing out the vlog loop🤭.
@growinginfrance

Yes, we have so much knowledge of our garden and how we live in our space now, time to correct some errors. We often lose the children in the bamboo, definitely magic haha 😂

Just cut down everything growing from the garden next door into your garden. Usually, the vegetable garden is placed around which vegetable / plants need most sun least sun, ect, that maybe away from the house. But I agree when it's close to the house it's easier . I just love pottring in the garden especially after a day in work it doesn't matter how tired I am a 10 minute plan in the garden turns into at least an hour. It was hard to find time for the garden when my Chrildren were young apart from playing and half the garden taken up with swings and kids stuff it didn't have much now I grow as much as I can fit into my small garden, I love it makes me so happy even when I make mistakes. Good luck with your garden can't wait to see it coming along.

I think it would be great to clear some space in the bamboo section and put a nice permanent (like marble) table and chairs to create a special area for lunch and maybe find a way to get some lights so you can sit on hot summer nights with a glass of wine or play games. It would become a magical, out-of-this-world place.

@@growinginfrance You could also explore the idea of using underwater lights powered by solar energy. Additionally, hanging fairy lights also powered by SE from the bamboo trees could beautifully illuminate the area. If you have access to the outside wall where the creek is running, consider planting jasmine vines that will cascade over the wall from the inside or have a section of the wall with climbing rose gardens. Finally, you could plant a combination of basil and rosemary along the line where the bamboo section is, which you could trim them into balls for added aesthetic appeal and fragrance in the air.

Hello Everyone! It is a shame when good sound homes become abandoned. All that does is bring down the selling price when someone wishes to buy it. A food garden is and will always be a life saver. If you haven't already thought of it; save the seeds when your veggies/fruit die for next year. OMGOSH! That bamboo and the sound of the creek is a BLESSING! I'm afraid I would spend many hours there with a cup of coffee.☕ Oh! So sad about the cherry tree...it like gave you its last fruits as a "welcome" gift. 🌸 How touching! Well, it did go back full circle Jack pertaining to the digger! That was a big digger!
