Welcome! Come along with me as I paint a model horse in acrylics, step-by-step, using only a soft paintbrush. I’ll show you how I keep my layers smooth, keep my color transitions soft, and create creamy blends and an oil paint-like glow. The techniques shown will work on original sculptures as well as resin, pewter, and plastic models like Breyer, Schleich, Peter Stone, CollectA, artist resins, etc.
✨ In this video I share:
○ How wet palettes help with blending
○ Two types of helpful acrylic painting mediums
○ Methods for reducing streaking
○ Correcting color with glaze layers
○ A technique for pinto mapping
○ And more!
⚠️🏆 Remember, thin layers, light paint loads, and very soft brushes are the keys to success with acrylics on models, along with a little patience and practice. You've got this!!!
I publish videos once a month sharing my adventures in creating horse and animal art in my free time for my own enjoyment, like sculpture, painting, printmaking and more. If you enjoy watching the adventures of an artist making things by hand, and sometimes learning something new, I’d love to show you what I make next!

I love it! Your explanation is so straight forward and helpful! I've been wanting to try this for ages but felt so intimidated and your video made the process so much clearer. I really hope you will be making more of these! I especially wonder how would you go about blending on a bigger surface (without the pinto markings). For this one you're working on small patches at a time and I would love to see this technique used on an entire model. Great job with the horse and the video, I'll make sure to tag you if I ever try this method! ❤️

Great tutorial!😄 I've been painting horses with brushes only for years and I've learned a few things. You did a fantastic job explaining everything! I personally don't use tape (I have before) due to the raised edges that it may leave which can be sanded down but I find that fanning out the edges is easier and helps to make a little more realistic look. Painting in the direction of the horse's hair helps as well. Pastels are a game changer in bring all the colors together, especially when you are doing a full horse (no white pattern). Keep up the great work and very helpful videos!😊

Awwww, thank you so much! 🥹 Yessss, pastels are awesome! I hope to revisit using pastels again someday. I had issues with ridges from the tape too, and at least they sanded smooth. Sanding does add extra time, though I can see how the overall time saved from masking large areas might help still, so I’m glad I gave the method a try.

@@CreativeKristenTaylor For sure, you have to try new methods in order to find the best! I'm glad that the edges where able to be sanded without affecting the final finish. 😄 I just make an outline of the markings now with a pencil. I've currently have two 1:9 scale models that I'm working on right now and this method work perfectly for them since they are both tovero's. Pan pastels are the best hands down! So if your going back to them you should go for Pan pastels.

Thank you so much for making this tut. I only use acrylics and find the airbrush to be too fussy. I do want to try oils at some point, but until I'm more confident with how my horses look overall I'll stay with acrylics!

This was really helpful with the gold layer first! Ive always wondered on how I could incorporate a shine with my coats. Ill have to try this out. Im actually familiar with using masking tape as paint marking templates (totally not to just avoid doing dozens of layers of white watered down.. 😂). Ive found it just works best to move away from the tape's edge with my strokes, although the wet of the watered down paint can cause the tape to pull away some. Ive never seen the paint bleed as much as yours did... Although, i do work in Stablemate Breyer size, so there might be less interference of grooves. Horse looks great!! ❤

This is absolutely fantastic!! Thank you!! I usually work in pastels with detail work in acrylics, but I may have to give full on acrylic hand painted horses a try! Which brush/brushes did you use to put on the initial color? I always get so overwhelmed in the brush section at Michaels
@CreativeKristenTaylor
@CreativeKristenTaylor Год назад
Thank you! And yay, I hope you enjoy more acrylic painting. The brushes I use are linked in the video description. If they’re not at Micheals, then try watercolor brushes or white taklon mixed media brushes. Those should all be soft enough to avoid textural streaking (makeup brushes can work wonderfully too).

Wow! Really helpful! I have to try that as soon as I get home! Do you also smooth some of the parts with water when for example a darker brown area gets too big or the edges are too visible?
@CreativeKristenTaylor
@CreativeKristenTaylor Год назад
Glad it was helpful! It depends. If I put on too much color (like the darker color) and it hasn’t dried yet, then I quickly add a lighter color next to it and blend the two together before they dry. If it did dry before I could fix it, then I’ll let it finish drying and layer the lighter color over the edges to get the look right. I’ve found that works well for me and I just use paint without adding water. If I need the consistency thinner, I use the two mediums mentioned

How long do you wait after painting a model by hand in acrylics would you use one of the varnishes/sealers you have listed?
@CreativeKristenTaylor
@CreativeKristenTaylor 9 месяцев назад
Depends on how many layers total, how high my local humidity is and which sealer. I like to wait at least a week with most of mine, especially if I’m sealing with an oil-based varnish like the Winsor & Newton spray
@trissfaris5717
@trissfaris5717 Год назад
Does adding the glazing medium to the acrylic require more than just soap and water as clean up? The need for paint thinner was always one of my biggest oil paint gripes (aside from the long dry times haha)
@CreativeKristenTaylor
@CreativeKristenTaylor Год назад
As long as your glazing medium is made from acrylic, then yes, all you need is soap and water.
@fleurtherabbit

I really want to try this technic, but do you always need to use the primer? Because I'm afraid I will lose some detail. And how many hours do you wait between layers?
@CreativeKristenTaylor
@CreativeKristenTaylor 2 месяца назад
Ideally it makes everything stick better and the paint last longer. As someone who paints on tiny, very detailed creations I feel the concern of losing detail to my core 😅 I’ve found the secret is in spraying light layers of primer, just enough to give even tooth. I recommend having something to test spray so you can get a feel for the technique and after that it will become second nature for you! How long I wait between acrylic layers largely depends on how many layers I’m painting in a session and the humidity levels, though generally it’s something around 2-15 minutes between layers and about 3-6 layers per day. This one went a lot faster for me given I started with white primer to get a jump on opacity.

@@CreativeKristenTaylor Wow thank you, what a quick response! I'm trying to repaint a schleich horse for someone who might have to put her horse down, and I don't have the money for an airbrush. But looking at the result from your video this seems like this works just as well, so I really hope I will be able to make something lifelike.
