This turned out really beautiful. I keep wondering how it would it would have looked if you had left drawers the natural quarter sawn color, the contrast would have really popped as well.🙌🏻
How could you not love Daisy, while I'm always impressed by your skill and artistry I think you're so lucky to have a wonderful friend, I'd have preferred a bit darker finish to show off the woodgrain, just my personal preference.
Hi Frances. She is a brilliant friend and she always keeps me entertained and laughing. With this piece I just wanted to try out the white stain, I like it but I also think it would have looked lovely darker 😀😀
The drawers' wood is tiger eye and should be stained darker. This is great for pine or other lighter wood, but this type of grain should be stained darker and warmer color. I used to restore antique radios. But... it's your channel, your work. Keep up with the great work. Like how you are consistent about small details in your videos. The headers, font, music, doggie (big plus). Also you put some light humor in before, I'm a big DIY kibitz and binge watch woodworking, metal working, restorations. Some channels even though have a very knowledgeable content creator, but if their delivery is dry, monotone and boring, they could not hold interest for long. You looks like you have a great channel in the making.
Hi Mercedes. I fully take your point about using darker stains. They would have been a more dramatic contrast but I just wanted a light and airy piece this time. I appreciate your constructive comments and you’re very kind saying you think my channel will be a good one. Thanks for watching and once again, I really appreciated you feedback 👍😀
Yes, I agree with you that on this wood a darker stain would do the wood more honer, however, I really like the effect of the white stain on the set of drawers!
Just gorgeous! It is so heartening to see someone who takes such a pride in his work. The back of the piece was finished, the small fingerprint removed. You would, and indeed should, be proud to put your name to your work. I am looking forward to your next vlog. I am glad that you show a representation of the sanding, staining etc as some vloggers show sanding etc until I feel like putting the kettle on and coming back to see if they have moved on. Your content is definitely not boring.
Hi Pamela, thats a lovely comment and it is much appreciated. I'm so glad I'm managing to get the balance of what I do to these pieces without it becoming monotonous for the viewer. Great feedback, thank you.😀😀😀😀👍
The techniques shown are the mark of the genuine craftsman. A brush and vacuum and then using a cleaning agent to get the project started. We see the washing done that we are almost certain leaves residue in the joins and corners. The brush and vacuum take care of that nicely. The insect repair is a great touch. We also saw the best way to spray. Across rather that vertically. Well done Sir!
Yikes, looked like white paint at first but turned out good with the white wash. Beautiful work. So nice when ALL surfaces are finished. This piece was worth all your work. Thanks for showing all this. 👍
I know better than to get weirded out until the end. The stain had me a bit nervous bc I thought it was going to hide the grain. NOT SO MUCH lol. Absolutely beautiful 😍
Thanks for watching and reserving judgement until the end, I appreciate it. Some make a judgement as soon as they see a paint colour or stain colour. 😀😀😀👍
Now I know what to do with my oak 3 drawer dresser. Absolutely right. Thank you. The same for your little dog, too. As the wicked witch of the Wizard of Oz said of Toto.
Very nice work! At first, I was appalled by the white stain, but it sank into the wood beautifully, highlighting the strong grain. Your work is so perfect.
So, so pretty. Few of the DYI folks do a white stain, but tend toward the dark look or paint. I remember this look from the 1990s was called "shabby chic," but it looks timeless to me. Thank you, and Daisy, for an enjoyable rehab of this lovely oak chest. Cheers from Oklahoma!
Just beautiful. Very respectfully restored. As most have mentioned, I too was unsure about the white stain, but it is perfect for this piece. You've got a new subscriber. Thanks again, and thank Daisy for her cameo.
I wasn’t sure where you were going with this when you used a white stain, but wow. What a transformation and now looking so modern too. Would look good in any style of home. And great job on dealing with the pesky insect damage too
Now, this is a restoration! What a beautiful job. I love that you respect the wood and don't seem to feel necessary to put some kind of art on it. Wonderful! 🙂👍
Hi, thanks. I was unsure of how it would turn out but I wanted to use this stain and end up with a lighter piece. I was definitely pleased with the outcome. 😀
Beautiful David, the trim was genius it matched so well and covered the big bug holes. The only thing I would object to is taking the back off. lipsticks can roll off the back u know 😁. But I forgive it's beautiful restored and ready for the 50 years.
The wood grain of this piece is spectacular. The trim you added fits the design so well. I like the original hardware, too! The bolt covers make it look more finished. I’m not usually a fan of whitewashed finishes, but the white stain really enhances this piece. I love watching your videos. Give Daisy a scratch behind the ears for me.
Ok. This inspiring. I can't afford quality timber anymore or space to store it to make furniture from scratch. I will have to make mdf cabinets for us and daughter (maybe a kitchen for her). But, as a retirement break-even hobby, restoration looks like a thing for me! Time to invest in the new 3M sander, L class dust extractor, finish sprayer, and a few more waxes, stains, etc
It’s great to hear your comment. Restoration and restyling of old unloved furniture is brilliant, it’s satisfying, rewarding, cost effective and really sustainable. Have fun 😀👍
Gorgeous, was not sure I would like the white stain as I thought it would wash out the grain but looks great. Covering the chewed area with dental detailing certainly added to the piece. Love it!
Hey, you're the first person called Mayfield Ive had leave a comment. Great to hear from you. The "Mayfield" in Mayfield Restorations actually comes from the name of my Victorian house. I've renovated and restored that over many years and I love my home so it felt appropriate and I i think Mayfield sounds pretty classy😃
That upstand on the back is kind of nice to keep things from sliding off the back and behind the dresser. You might consider finishing the upstand and putting it in the bottom drawer, because a future owner might feel differently about it. Im always adding them back on!😅
I wasn’t sure if I’d like the white stain, but it did turn out lovely. Removing that piece on the top back makes it look more modern, but I personally always liked that rail because it kept things from falling behind the dresser! Love those drawer handles! I don’t remember seeing vertical drawer pulls before. Another fine restoration!
