Something I find fascinating about the PC Engine GT/TurboExpress is how they were able to shrink the motherboard to fit in a portable form factor. The HuCards seemed to be well suited for it given how the original PC Engine console was already quite small compared to the Mega Drive and Super Famicom.
@samuraimont
@samuraimont 2 года назад
Thanks Tito for sharing this video. I have used it as a reference to replace the capacitors for my Turbo GT. However, just one additional suggestion, if one is using the electrolytic cylindrical capacitors, try to solder them keeping them parallel to the motherboard, otherwise there may be challenges while closing the handheld (especially , the 5 sound capacitors and the capacitors which would fall under the small attached PCB (Hu Card section PCB).

Just found your channel and your video production is great!! I have been going through all your previous videos over the last couple of days. I do have one question or suggestion. Why dont you use a Hot Air Solder gun to remove the SMD capacitors? Seems that would be easier than cutting them down. Either way its great to see retro systems getting the love they deserve. Price, battery life, game library were all huge contributions to the game boy dominating the hand held market for well over 10 years. Gameboy originally launched and came out with Tetris. At that time, the tetris craze was in full swing in the US. Gameboys were very affordable. Many adults bought them just to play tetris while on the train to work, or at the doctors office... that kind of thing. Price and game library were probably neck and neck. It was adults buying the majority of these things for their kids. For the price of one Game Gear, or one Lynx, you could buy TWO gameboys and maybe even a game. If you had two kids.... you were buying them each their own game boy.. not a game gear to share, you know how well sharing goes over at that age. The library itself was really good as well. I had a game gear. The games were OK. But it wasn't that fascinating. When some kids in the neighbhorhood starting getting gameboys... attention was focused solely on the game boy.

the quality of those little LCD's is mindblowing for early 1990s... Wouldn't even be bothered to replace the screen, which given even the psp1000 from 2005 and psp2000 from 2007 cry out for such a mod; is all the more remarkable.

I've been on a spree of buying and refurbing these machines for the past few months, I love them. I would just reinforce the point you made about cleaning the pads of any remaining electrolyte, as this can cause shorts and in worst cases blow the backlight circuit. Next you should consider a 3.5" RGB screen mod, this is one of the greatest mods for any handheld console IMHO, you get a larger and better quality picture and also from a cosmetic point of view looks better than stock.
@MachoNachoProductions
@MachoNachoProductions 3 года назад
I really want to do that mod but I’m holding off until someone releases an aftermarket shell for the console. I can’t justify cutting the original shell since the console is getting to be quite rare. That was great. Sad that a lot of this handheld in the 90's have got all this bad capacitor, but thankfully we can save it with brand new one. The PC Engine GT is at the same time a great and bad idea, because the PC Engine is the smallest console ever made (one I try to track, but their expensive ) so the idea to portalise it'snt stupid but the handheld market is not ready for that kind of hardware. Great stuff 🤘

Thank you Ace Bunny! And thank you for the comment! Always great to hear from you! Totally agree! It may not have been the best business decision by NEC, but I’m glad it exists. thx for the video. I have a question I have done similar to you but I waited for sadly too long. I already got damage but is not really visible. Button one and two are not working. in essence, I can not use my GT anymore. I did not want to remove the grey rubber on the connection path on the pc engine gt to the buttons. Any suggestion on how I should proceed when the button connection is broken? Regards David

After going sober recently, I've been trying to find things to get addicted to. Thanks to you, I just picked up a soldering iron, a few gameboy SPs, and an electronics tool kit, so again, thanks a bunch. I'm planning on building one with the wireless charging, new screen, larger battery, and I'm looking into how viable adding a solar panel to the top lid would be! (I know it's kind of unrelated to this video but I still wanted to say thanks.)

@MachoNachoProductions
@MachoNachoProductions 3 года назад
I really want to do this mod but I am hesitant because they all require cutting the shell extensively. I was hoping that either a no cut lcd mod would come out or an aftermarket shell will be made. It would break my heart to cut the shell since these are getting so rare and expensive. Finger crossed one of those things happen🤞. Cheers buddy!

@@MachoNachoProductions I’m a savage, bro! I don’t even care about that part, but the messed up thing is that I know that I should. But after all don’t you have two of them? Why not mod one and keep the OEM? Or maybe just fool us into thinking that you did it with some tricky editing and Hollywood magic? But seriously though, the thing is if you don’t show us the correct way to do it then that means that people like me will be flying blind and mess everything up, then we will have to go and find another perfectly good Turboexpress to chop up. Thereby subjecting even more consoles to destruction. So by you doing a tutorial, in actuality you are actually saving more shells out there from being needlessly butchered. I mean its the only choice really 🤷‍♂️

@MachoNachoProductions
@MachoNachoProductions 3 года назад
Great question! The only reason I am skeptical about replacing the screen is because the only kit available requires you to cut the shell a lot. And because these consoles are so rare, I really don’t want to ruin the shell. Rather I want to preserve it as best as I can. Cheers William and happy new years!

Is cutting off those surface mount caps and ripoig them off the only way? I would be afraid I'd rip a pad off. Would a desoldering pump allow me to get those off without much trouble?
@brandonkick
@brandonkick Год назад
A hot air station like the Quick 957DW, liquid flux, and some kapton tape to protect anything you don't want to get warm / hot is the best way to do it. This way isn't horrible, but pay special attention to how he is doing this. Cut the can just above the plastic base, then split the plastic base and remove it and finally desolder the legs. Some people put a "spin" on this technique (no pun intended) and will twist the cans until the whole unit breaks off from the pads. Puts WAY more stress than necessary on the pads, and greatly increases your odds of ripping a pad off and damaging the motherboard. I say if your going to do this, use hot air. The 957DW I mentioned above is a $100 investment, but it has many applications and will make your work easier, safer and more enjoyable.
@greedostick

Great vid Macho Nacho. A further question: the brightness on my stock GT LCD is uneven : left part of the screen is brighter than right, and when I raise brightness with the knob , left part brightness increases before the right. I don't think the LCD is damaged and the flaw could be inherent to the old technology but 1. do you experience this on your systems ? 2. Would you know of a way to improve or fix this ?
@MachoNachoProductions
@MachoNachoProductions 3 года назад
Hmm that is interesting. Both my units don’t have that issue. It could be a bad lcd module. I’ve seen replacements go on sale on eBay. It could also be a capacitor issue. Have you replace all the capacitors?
