As an American, I have to say that I am absolutely ashamed of the role played in this ESL proposal by the US-based owners of Liverpool, Arsenal, Man United, and AC Milan. The additional fact that the ESL is being bankrolled by US-based JP Morgan makes it clear that America is imposing its imperial will on the sacred institution of European Football. I hope that the popular backlash against this is just as strong in the US as it is in Europe.

I keep seeing the argument that these teams deserve more for generating the most money, but what makes this exact moment so special that the biggest brand names in European football get to remain as such forever? 25 years ago Man City and Tottenham were nothing compared to where they are now in stature. Fortunes change over time. You can say the champions league is itself corrupt, but at least you have to earn a place in it. A competion where 75% of the field have automatic entry each year is terrible. It was not that long ago Chelsea spent half a season in the bottom half of the premier league. Nothing like this should be automatic on name brand only.

Why do they punish the players not the clubs

Now is the right time to see the true nature of the top players which side they are. Now is the time to tell players you pay your agents & there should be a wage capping. This is why the big clubs are debt & out of control. Clubs should be own 51% by fans or local business. There should be independent board in each FA to check who invest in clubs it not laundry money too.

I see all these people with strong opinions in the comments without understanding what is really happening. I’ll put it simply: big clubs go broke = the end of the game. Big clubs ARE going broke, COVID just accelerated the process. If big clubs declare bankruptcy, what do you think will happen to the leagues/smaller teams? All of the biggest European clubs lost money last year and are on track to lose much more this year. Real Madrid is on track to lose more than 500mil between the two years. That is simply not sustainable. They are trying to create a league with extremely attractive matches every single week, with 5 teams added based on merit, that could also be parallel to the champions league for teams that didn’t make the cut for the Super League. Sadly, and even though I wish it wasn’t this way, clubs NEED to make money. Players salaries and signing new players and all the travel/maintenance/promotion and everything else required every year is extremely costly. The truth is, people are MUCH more likely to go out of their way to watch a Barcelona vs Bayern Munich on Wednesday than they are to watch a big team vs small team group stage match. And in this scenario with the current situation, it makes nothing but sense. I respect everybody’s opinion on this but if you want clarification on what’s really going on, go Watch Florentino Pérez statement today on Spanish TV. Clubs are trying to save themselves from bankruptcy, and UEFA are appealing to your feelings to seem like the good guys when all they are doing is threaten clubs and players.
