Very good analyze and ludic video! I played so many takes of the ending (which is improvised by the way) that you can hear me throwing the sticks against the wall out of frustration at the very end :D That ending is definitely one of the highlights of the shows for me!
Another Pain Of Salvation song to check out: "Fandango" from their 2002 "Remedy Lane" album. I'm not sure it warrants a whole video on its own, but maybe you could combine it with a similar concept from another song. The whole song is in 5/4 but with interesting accents instrumental arrangements that give it an uneasy feeling. Then when the chorus hits, the drums keep the 5 on the crash, but the vocals, instruments and bass drum go into a 4 over 5 polyrhythm which gives it a really interesting feel that I haven't really heard in many other songs. Keep up the awesome content!!
Nice video! I always find it so hard to actually understand their insane beats. One thing to note - this "pulse" represents an actual heart pulse, this whole album is about Daniel's months long stay in the hospital fighting a mortal battle with flesh eating bacteria in his back. In this song you can even hear the ventilators and beeping at the start, and it specifically deals with changes in the band happening while he was stuck in the hospital bad being disconnected from everything and everyone.
i've just discoved this band yesterday, in Hellfest, France. It was an amazing show. The rythms in their songs are really interesting, now i'm just listening to all their stuff on youtube, and found your video. The first drum part of this song reminds me a french math rock band playing with time signatures, CHEVAL DE FRISE, with the song "Un Pont Et Des Eaux Noires Limoneuses". It's a band but in reality there's only a drummer and a guitarist. It's the same type of groove with the gradually shifting bass drum.

I happen to know Leo Margarit' s father; Bernard, a self taught first class guitar player and composer, very keen on Khyal music and currently touring France and India with his wife Joyeeta, ,"“one of the best - if not the very best - young women sitar players in the world today”. playing some original popular fusion stuff for new age geeks. I’ve been listening to Pain of Salvation for about 17 years, but I’ve only recently started to appreciate just how rhythmically interesting they are. Daniel’s sense of rhythm is from another dimension, and Léo deserves way more credit in the drumming world.
I am Brazilian, I got to know pain of salvation in 2001 when the magazine planet metal 2 was released, it came with a CD with several bands, PoS was the second song, playing “inside”, the teenager me fell in love with that song and a long time after that I came across the actual albums (stuff that is hard to get in the countryside). PoS has always been in my top 5 bands of all time. 20 years after that they blow me up when releasing “Panther”. What a band!
The saddest thing is not that you didn't know PoS before. It is that this video is one of your less successful, meaning people don't click on it because they don't know the band either :(
Nice! Definitely better late than never. And that's actually a pretty good place to start too (for a musician...for a normal person, I wouldn't recommend FTT as their intro to Pain of Salvation...if it takes watching a 10 minute video to comprehend a song, it's not a song into which most people would invest time...and you were actually quite efficient in your explanation, others might've made a longer video). I absolutely agree with the recommendations of many people in the comments here. *Remedy Lane* is Pain of Salvation's magnum opus, the pinnacle of what a concept album can be (and they ONLY write concept albums, although the cohesiveness of the concept does vary). But I'd add their debut, *Entropia* , to the recommendation list ahead of some of the others (e.g. Be and The Perfect Element Pt. 1). Daniel Gildenlöw is the mastermind behind all Pain of Salvation (he's the thread that runs through all their albums, their sole original member, main songwriter, singer and guitarist), and he was just 23 years old when Entropia was recorded. It's a heck of a debut...these guys shot out of nowhere, and after just one full-length album, people were calling them "Europe's answer to Dream Theater." This was meant as a compliment - and it truly was at the time - but I actually think they have since surpassed Dream Theater. DT stopped growing and experimenting in the early 2000s (truth be told, some would end that period in 1999, or rarely, even earlier...but I consider *Octavarium* to be their last quality album). Pain of Salvation have NEVER stopped progressing. You can definitely hear things that are reminiscent of their first couple albums in 2020's Panther, but they're mostly just subtleties - the main thrust of the album is entirely new for them. And actually, not all of the fans of their first 4 albums (in which they established themselves as a significant prog band and indeed, as an INFLUENCE for other prog bands) have stuck with them throughout this continued experimentation...some people prefer a band to "find" their sound and just relentlessly repeat it. But fortunately for them, (most) prog fans are a different bunch...and amongst prog fans, Pain of Salvation are REVERED. But what TRULY sets them apart is that they have NO bad albums...no duds, nothing that bears skipping over in one's discovery of their catalogue. Gildenlöw is super-talented, and he has honed his musical composition and production skills as he has matured - it is rare indeed that he lets a sub-standard song get released, but not a single one of their albums has more than 2 of them (and it's usually 1 or none). I envy anyone who has yet to discover this band in their full glory - enjoy the ride!
Man, this is what EVERYONE has been sayin about POS! i don't know how they just skipped my playlist, but now that they did, I'm gonna spend some time with them ! Another band I feel is always improving is Porcupine Tree. I can't say I like ALL their albums, but starting around Deadwing, I REALLY love all the rest! What you said about DT is spot on. I also feel "Octavarium" is their "last" album, at least from an exploring and creativity pov. After that they seem to find the "formula that works" and they just repeat it. But also, I know how hard it is to reinvent yourself every time, so it's understandable!
@@YogevGabay Yeah, it's not even accurate to say that Pain of Salvation are criminally underrated because almost all prog fans who hear their music rate them exceptionally highly...ONCE they hear them. That's the problem - exposure. And to tell you the truth, _they were just _*_SO_*_ close to breaking into the North American (and hence the world's) "prog rock/metal consciousness."_ Back in 2009 they were booked as an opening act for the North American leg of "Progressive Nation," which was a smallish prog festival that Dream Theater organized and headlined (Pain of Salvation has opened for Dream Theater on European and Australian tours, but this was to be their first time opening for them in North America). This tour had 24 dates in the biggest cities in North America, and they were booked into decent-sized venues in most of those cities. Over 50,000 (conservatively-speaking - actual numbers are hard to come by, but this is a safe minimum estimate) existing prog fans across the continent attended this tour...but Pain of Salvation were cheated out of this career-changing opportunity only a month or so before they were to play the first show. You see...the funding fell through, after the label subsidiary that was paying for them to take part in this tour declared bankruptcy that summer. So not only were they screwed over by this turn of events, but thousands of fans (including me) were denied an opportunity to see one of the most incredible metal bands in the world (incidentally, though I've been a massive fan of theirs since 2003, I have yet to see them perform live). Anyway...you should definitely check out the song "People Passing By" off of their debut album, just to get an idea of how "ahead of their time" they really were. I think you'll like it - it's actually kind of funky, if you can believe it.

Yeah, neither did I. Until I did. And then...😲😲😲😲😲 Seriously. I think it is their best album SINCE Remedy Lane. It is almost perfect; but it takes a few listens to come to this realization.
Could you analyze WAIT from the album PANTHER? Has some 11/16 13/16 stuff as far as I know (well it said that in the drum play through by Leo Margarit)

I'm nearly as excited as when I discovered mars volta in 2003, and " the aristocrats " 2 years ago, wich you certainly already know...and maybe play just for practicing with one arm on sunday afternoon ;)

I've got a pretty good understanding of polyrhythms and other weird time things, but there's one Pain of Salvation song I've never been able to wrap my head around- Angels of broken things, it starts with a three note guitar pattern that could be 3/4 on it's own, but then 4/4 drums come in and the the 3 note pattern is some sort of bizarre polymeter within a polyrhythm and I just can't make out exactly what it is!
As far as I remember (I recorded the song such a long time ago now) it’s mostly a 9/4, and the “weird” polyrhythms are 16th notes grouped by 5! I hope it demystifies it a little :)
Another amazing song, and I find myself say that on like EVERY POS song, man you guys are INCREDIBLE. So fresh in the metal landscape and just so undeniably unique.
Oh wow you did PAin of Salvation. This album is full of polymeters. One of the most interesting ones is Angel of broken things as it is acutally a ballad but rythmically quite weird. This is what I think is special about the band, they have catchy stuff and it often feels really nice while there's something weird going on in the background.

The album is about the lead vocalists struggle with a near-fatal illness - the song reflects a struggle for identity, but specifically the changing nature of the band whilst he was stuck in hospital.
