I agree! I think it makes the bike and is the only year they had used that style front plate.

Had one, sold it to build my house in 84. I used it for trail riding, indeed had a very narrow power band. I tell everyone when I got off that bike, my heart was beating. I used to use my brothers cam 2 racing fuel and it really woke that beast up.

That bike looks amazing. That black rims give it a meaner look than the original aluminum color.

I agree on the rims. I wish I had an original set as well. I am a big fan of gold or black rims on the CR's.

@@CharlieFerer I am currently starting my side by side 89 CR250 builds. One will be oem and the other after market. I am allowing the community to choose the direction of the aftermarket build with options i provide them through poll voting. It will be interesting to see what color rims they choose for the build. I am a big fan of the black for its aggressive look.

Excellent look at Honda’s first open class 2t. One of the complaints by magazines at that time was a confused 4 speed gearbox . Too tall of a first gear then too closely spaced final three cogs. There’s an ‘81 Honda ad on RU-vid with Chuck Sun practicing on one which is cool. Thank you for posting!

Beautiful bike Charlie. I raced one of these in 81. I was about 80 lbs ringing wet and could never start the thing (the mechanics would have to start it for me). The only time I ever seriously tried starting it, the motor kicked back and launched me over the bars (kind of embarrassing I must say). Also raced an 82 and 83 and you're right, it was no match for the later bikes. Beautiful resto none the less.

What a gem, Charlie. I remember it on the cover of Cycle World magazine, and I pictured Chuck Sun riding it in the Nationals. I still think it is a mean looking bike. Of course Chuck's bike looked nothing like it! Funny to think those tank graphics were only on the 2 air cooled bikes, the 80 and the 450. I actually like them. Wasn't the best bike that year, but it played a big part of the history.

Wow ...love this bike 😎 ...I totally agree with you on the front number plate 💛 But as Stnning as this Honda 450 is ...I would still take your 83 KX 125 💚🖤

Wow a nice time piece. My son and I are collectors but nothing like the condition of your bikes. We picked up a 81 CR450 a few years ago with the famous finger nail number plate lol. This walk around will help us restore our 450. Thanks so much for your time and the detail information. From Ontario Canada.

Testers hated this bike, the one time i did get a chance to ride one i thought it was fast, it did come on hard but a quick shift kept it in the pull. It was punchy.
