Hello dear Pigeon Lady, I have a question regarding my 2 pigeons. They were kept inside, I let them fly inside the house and they seemed to enjoy it. Now I am having a hard situation in life since my single mother was in the ICU and will stay in the hospital for a month at least. Because of this I had to move to my aunt till then and also had to give my pigeons to a pethouse till my mother gets back home. My pigeons couple is kept in my ~120cmx80cmx180cm cage. They arent allowed to ger out since they will fly away. I wanted to ask you if it is ok for the pigeons to stay in this cage for about a month without being able to fly around freely or will they fall in some sort of depression? Should I ask the petkeeper to let my pigeons fly away and be free forever? This will indeed hurt me since I love my pigeons, but it's better than them getting mentally ill or something. I need your advise, please!!
If they have company then they are less likely to get depressed than being alone but their physical fitness may decline as they lose muscle mass through lack of exercise. If its only temporary then they may be okay but you will need to make sure they can get proper exercise and social contact as soon as you can.
Females are more likely to be receptive as pigeons are likely to perceive their owners as male, regardless of gender. Having said that, boy pidges can be boistrous and fun too and less likely to suffer with health issues because they dont lay eggs.
