Your femur is under so much pressure being contracted by the tendons in your thigh that when it breaks, the two halves shear next to each other. Resetting the bone takes so much strength because you're basically stretching massive fucking rubber bands. Because of that, for most of human history, a broken femur had an 80% mortality rate, despite the fact that it didn't touch any organs. It wasn't until the Thomas Splint was invented around the turn of the 1900s that the odds flipped with an 80% survival, as the splint basically acted like a car jack to separate both halves of your femur against the compression of your tendons to safely reset the bone.

god I love the fix & pasha - I could watch them sharing facts for like 7 hours. also my special interest is snakes so this season kept me well fed! here's a few more snake facts for yall: 1. snakes can't blink - they don't have eyelids! there's a transparent ocular scale that covers the eye to protect it, sometimes called a spectacle. yes, that one part in harry potter where the snake winks at harry is a lie - rip. this also means it can be hard to tell if they are asleep; if a snake is just sitting there perfectly still staring at you, it's not plotting your demise - it's taking a nap! 2. it's a common myth that snakes are deaf, or that they don't have ears. while you can't see their ears from the outside, they do in fact have internal ears! they do hear sound, it's just more muffled than it would be for us - they rely more on smell and sight. 3. we used to think that snakes with slit-pupiled eyes are venomous and snakes with round pupils are non-venomous, but nowadays we know that it's actually about what time of day they're most active in! nocturnal snakes will usually have slit pupils, while diurnal snakes usually have round pupils. 4. there's not just nocturnal and diurnal (active at night and active during the day): there's my favorite all-time word, *crepuscular*. it means an animal that's most active at dawn and at dusk. garter snakes are crepuscular! (they have round pupils in case you were wondering ^v^)

Fun fact adjacent: Frogs use their eyes to push food down their throats because they can't actively swallow. And they're unable to throw up so they essentially throw up their stomachs and empty it out and use their eyes to swallow it back down again.

Intellectual language gets their gears grinding. This is not a romance. THIS is a bromance. Now I'm buying Dropout to watch this.

Did you know that during the second world war, the Germans attempted to use captured Sherman Tanks to infiltrate the allied lines and sow chaos among their troops? 350 Shermans were requested for this purpose, but less than a dozen were actually delivered, so Panzers were used, painted to with allied colours. In order to avoid friendly fire, yellow triangles were painted on the back of these "Beutepanzers". The plan had a major flaw, however, as when real allied tanks came across them, and saw their giant german muzzle-brakes, unfamiliar markings, and lack of radio contact, they opened fire almost on sight.

Did you know that in WW2, Bat bombs were an experimental World War II weapon developed by the United States. The bomb consisted of a bomb-shaped casing with over a thousand compartments, each containing a hibernating Mexican free-tailed bat with a small, timed incendiary bomb attached. Dropped from a bomber at dawn, the casings would deploy a parachute in mid-flight and open to release the bats, which would then disperse and roost in eaves and attics in a 20-40-mile radius (32-64 km). The incendiaries, which were set on timers, would then ignite and start fires in inaccessible places in the largely wood and paper constructions of the Japanese cities.

Did you know that while it is even more technologically feasible to build better supersonic aircraft now than the Concorde, the reason most airlines aren’t looking to do that is because there’s a loss of lift the closer to the speed of sound you get. So you need to use more fuel to achieve that extra speed. And that’s on top of the increased maintenance costs, wear/tear, and the reduced loads you can take in supersonic aircraft compared to the current airspeeds.
@lyaneris
@lyaneris 7 месяцев назад
Also, at high operating limits, maximum operating mach and stall mach are so close together that there is only a small window between overspeed and stall ("coffin corner"). - Basically lift decreases close to mach 1, but once the air is reaching supersonic speeds, there can be more lift than at subsonic speeds (one needs to build the wings for that). The colder the air, the lower the speed of sound (mach speed is temperature-dependent). A subsonic jet can be flying faster than the speed of sound, while it is still flying in a safe range below mach 1 indicated due to jetstream winds (that happened a few years ago for example).
@CallMeCrazyCallMePoor
@CallMeCrazyCallMePoor 2 месяца назад
Also, many nations may prohibit supersonic flight over land, and airlines would only be able to employ supersonic carriers over oceans unless a soft-boom jet were developped.

One way of defining the length of a bird’s beak is the distance between the tip of the beak to the bird’s nostrils, which are usually located close to the skull. If you use this definition, the bird with the shortest beak in the world is the kiwi bird, because it’s nostrils are located at the tip of its beak. (The kiwi uses this adaptation to sniff around in leaf litter for food.)

Did you know that mushrooms are the reproductive organs of a fungi, like the fruit of a tree, so picking them doesn't harm the fungi? The fungus itself is a bunch of root like structures underground and they develop complex connections with plants and other fungi by connecting those structures and the plants' roots and they can share nutrients and water through them.

So if you're in a room with no way for the oxygen to replenish then you'd panic once the co2 builds up and your body realizes it's inhaling it because it forms acid in our stomach but if we were outside and all oxygen just suddenly vanished we wouldn't realize until we just fell over dead due to the lack of oxygen? I mean I guess that further explains the need for oxygen measuring equipment when we work inside closed off spaces like inside a tank because we literally can't detect the lack of oxygen ourself.
@lyaneris
@lyaneris 7 месяцев назад
Yep, it's extremly difficult for us to realize hypoxia. That's why there is altitude measuring equipment with warnings if cabin altitude exceeds 10 000ft in planes (and there are immediate oxygen masks and an emergency decent following). There are flight centers where you can try a hypoxia room - they make sure you get the oxygen mask ^^. Additionally, hypoxia symptoms widely differ and you'd be in a state of euphoria before dying.

That's also one of the dangers of carbon monoxide. You can fill your lungs with it, which gives you enough air to actually *exhale,* but what you're getting in return still suffocates you.
@Catman_CM
@Catman_CM 7 месяцев назад
Tbe acid doesn't form in the stomach, though, but your actual bloodstream. That's how your body can detect too much CO2. One of the reasons we wouldn't realize if all the oxygen disappeared from the atmosphere is because the vast majority of the air we breathe is actually molecular nitrogen gas, which we breathe in all the time and doesn't cause a build of acidity in our bloodstream. We'd never even see it coming.
@bear_trap107
@bear_trap107 5 месяцев назад
@@Catman_CM yep, also sometimes when scuba divers ascend too quickly from deep down to the surface, nitrogen bubbles up in the bloodstream which can travel to the heart causing an embolism. They call it the Bends.
