So I ran across this video weeks ago when I didn't have a guitar. I'm thinking, awesome stuff, I gotta learn that. After finally acquiring a guitar, I pulled up the video and started playing it at half-speed to start learning the solo but... something's weird... the fingering patterns don't look right. Eventually I realized that the guitar is tuned FULL FOURTHS i.e. Stanley Jordan style, that is, the B is tuned up to C and the E is tuned up to F. I saw on the website that the transcription is in standard tuning, so people getting the transcription should know that their fingering patterns are not going to match the video.

hey dude I need help, I want that sound but I don't know were to start, what scales are you using? can you give any pointers?
@JimmyGeikie
@JimmyGeikie 7 лет назад
RTWrename Good luck man. Really, it all comes down to studying your instrument, not just having a dude tell you what scales he's using. You need to know why it sounds that way, what it is, how it related to what you heard before and what you want to hear next. It's about personal practice and understanding, not just having someone list some scales, modes, which flats and sharps he's utilizing and when, what sort of legato techniques and patterns he's using.... There is so much more. If you want to get this sound, try to listen to more music like this, try to figure out what they're playing, and why the lead runs sound the way they do over the chords used behind them. I know this comment is 4 years old, but best of luck man, I hope you've still been on your musical journey ✌

@lvrbass

The faster parts of this are probably the easiest parts for him to improv. its less about phrasing and thought and more just pure shred with some chromatics. Harder to do the syncopation and develop the solo than shred shred. at least thats how it is for me... obviously i dont speak for Tom.
@JimmyGeikie
@JimmyGeikie 7 лет назад
Lorenzo Rizzardi agreed slightly, but that isn't just "shred improv" by any means.... he's using pretty advanced legato techniques, and crossing modes like a boss... much more than simple shredding for sure. I feel you on the fact that sometimes it can be easier to play fast runs because at times, the fast passage is more of a transition to a much more pronounced melody line, but what he is "shredding" is definitely not to be considered any orthodox shred.
@lvrbass
@lvrbass 7 лет назад
I mean if we are talking about "shred" in the general like metal and rock, which is what its usually affiliated with then yeah i totally agree that it's unconventional but in Fusion and Jazz modal and chord scale knowledge is pretty much required so for a fusion player i wouldn't say its unconventional but for a simple shredder it would most definetly seem that way. That being said Tom is amazing and i wouldn't compare him to anybody besides the best. not to say you are a simple shredder, obviously idk you haha. And its not bad to be Diatonically shred-tastic, its just a style difference
