Slayd5000 presents... Funkadelic - (Not Just) Knee Deep *By Special Request* Re-upped FULL VERSION!!! N-joi! & subscribe to my channel. Positive comments are always welcome. More to come.
The History of Knee Deep: To all you Funksters out there, here's the history of this incredible song..... in the late-70s, Disco was dominating the charts. Donna Summer, the BeeGees and KC and the Sunshine Band were all in heavy rotation on the radio. Acts like Cameo and other R&B/Funk acts were doing okay but only in the Black community. So, James Brown attempted a comeback in 1976 with Get Up Offa That Thing, which was meant to challenge Disco and restore Funk and R&B back to the head of the industry. Acts such as Brick, Con Funk Shun, the Isley Brothers and others were dropping big hits but still couldn't compete with Disco mainly because Disco was being played at all the discotheques (nightclubs) and skating rinks. In 1978, George Clinton and Funkadelic exploded beyond the R&B charts with One Nation Under A Groove and he knew then what he had to do to crush Disco once and for all, so he wrote the song Knee Deep and sent it to his friend Juni Morrison from the legendary Ohio Players. It was Juni, not George, who created this amazing track and when he sent it back to George Clinton, George knew it was a hit and he had the band that could handle it. So, the genius that he was, George had Michael "Kidd Funkadelic" Hampton on lead guitar along with Phillippe Winn (from the legendary Spinners) ad-libbing the lead vocals near the end. Let me also add that if you think the drums on this track is through the roof and as funky as a beat can get, it was legendary Funk bassist Bootsy Collins who, coincidentally, played drums on this song (as well as on One Nation Under A Groove). The entire rest of the song is just the Mighty P-Funk mob doing what they do best and the rest is history. By the way, in case you all are wondering how George was able to recruit Juni Morrison from the Ohio Players and Phillippe Winn from the Spinners, it's because they were both homeboys and good friends of Bootsy Collins. NOW YOU KNOW
@@snellsman Thanks. BTW, did I mention that Bootsy Collins was on drums on this song (and on One Nation Under A Groove)? This is why the unique Funk rhythm of the snare is in a deadlock with the bass line.
Music is such that it has to continually change, the tempo, bridge, all have to break out of their former selves to appease the ear of the current generation, else we'd still be listening to the catcalls of the cavewoman
George Clinton is probably the most underrated musician in the history of music. This is genius on a different level. The music, the lyrics, the ad libs, the videos, the stage performances, the outfits, the album covers, all of it is peak excellence.
His first concert in Ft Worth was off the hook. My first real concert, I was 17. It was the best show I've ever seen. The lit the stage. Nothing like today
I am 62 . I was in high 😂. When this first came out . Back in the day ! When we partied ! We partied . It was all about having fun ! Not BS ! The length of the song didn’t matter . Oh ! You also stayed in shape . With songs like this. This young generation doesn’t have a clue? As so much fun ! Our generation had . Their loss .
Totally agree all the dancing I did I now suffer from arthritis 🤣but know how to cut the floor up don't let me be carpet floors people will end up at my job on pay day like your gonna pay for my carpet 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣💯
I feel sorry for this generation. They don't have a clue how to dance and party without starting stuff. We had a good time. And I'm 66. Those were the days.
And I believe he helped compose the tune! He joined Parliament after his run with The Spinners. Ecstatic when The Spinners were inducted in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!!!
I was in Chicago when they performed (aug. 78). I was 16. I begged and threaten my parents that I would flunk out of college if they didn't let me go. They did. I am funkadelic surgeon (ER) today!!!
The 70’s was lit!!! We was jamming to funk, disco, r&b and rap music. What a time to be born and raised in the 60's and 70’s!!!! My all-time Parliament/Funkadelic JAM. Still jamming in 2024!!!
Lost my mom on 10/18/19 😢 so when I hear certain oldies songs, I literally start crying. But this damn song got me smiling because all I can see is my mom dancing going down to the floor and coming back up rolling her hips. 😂😂 She loved this song for real. Lol My siblings and I use to have dance offs with her too. Wow! Thank You for great music and memories😘💕
Good for you 👍 God bless your Mom. May you always feel the warmth of her presence. Mine is gone too.....but good memories like you shared keep me smiling. ❤️🌺🌷
This is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE track of ALL TIME. When I have my big birthday party for my 60th next year, I'm coming into the party to this! Full 15 minutes! Every member is irreplaceable, but the Spinners Philippe Wynn and his smooth voice is the icing on the cake
No, Sis, none of these members were replaceable. Phillippe Wynn absolutely CRUSHED it on his vocals, but would the song have sizzled without Michael Hampton's scorching guitar solo or Bootsy Collin's deep funk beat on drums, or Junie Morrison's smooth keyboard melody? What about Garry Shider, George Clinton and Jessica Cleaves on that dope vocal chorus?
You know you're in love with someone or something when it still thrills you after 43 years. That guitar solo is timeless!! Every note, the phrasing, the tone color, the mixture of Jazz, blues, rock and classical passages makes this guitar solo the best in R&B music history. Bravo Mike "Kid Funkadelic" Hampton, Bravo!
I swear you took the words right out of my mouth. One of the things that makes George Clinton one of music's all-time geniuses is his ability to recognize talent and allow that talent to flow unleashed. There were many R&B/Funk bands back in that era that may not have allowed Michael Hampton the freedom to rock a guitar solo like that. The true brilliance of Parliament-Funkadelic is its freedom to catch a vibe and just flow with it.
My mother born in "82 and my father in "81. I was born in 2005 and I'm 15 years old. I bump this song almost everyday and not just this song but all this music. I thank god for my parents staying true to the Ol Skool and passing it on to me. All I listen is music from the 90s and down. I even bump music from the 30s. I sure do stand out in a crowd because everything about me is old school. The music, the clothing, the culture, the mentality. I have much love for this song and for every other old school track there is and I have much love for the people who made these songs, for the people who lived through it, the people who still live it today, and for the people who have passed it on to us. We need to keep this alive because the old school is a dying breed that needs to live on forever and I'm definitely gonna keep it going with my kids and my kids kids. This is something that will never die and to all the people from the old school I shout out all my love to you and to finish it off let's keep on bumpin this funk!
Never, ever gets old. This vibe is uplifting especially when you are driving to an event. Dress the part and kick the volume up while rocking back and forth. Yes sir, old school rules forever.
Too bad the sounds of the instruments and the play of the voices are not prevalent in today's music. Parliament Funkadelic was definitely way ahead of their time.
Most of their stuff was recorded at United Sound Studios on 2nd. This the first group I ever seen preform in a concert at the Olympia Stadium back in 1977, I was 13 years old. Being born in 64 ,and raised thru out 70's, 80's, and 90's, we experienced the best music, ( I DID SAY MUSIC) that was ever recorded. U had to be there, and I'm very pleased that I was present. Thank u Uncle George, and all the other masterful musicians, engineers, writers, producers, entertainers.
Hello, can you tell me what synthesizer was used on this track, at the beginning, main riff!! OBX, or mini moog? Sound hear on Prince’ stuff( sex shooter/ Nasty girl..) please help, thanks!!!💕☔️☔️☔️☔️
AGREE 101 %, its the mind and musical genius that comes together for a short time, in this case 15 mns. worth, Like Bach and Beethoven, only they (George and Bernie and many others), are modern day follow -on's of those Euro persons, these are American geniuses, that just happen to come from largely African american culture .
Ouch! It's now 40.5 yrs old & I'm teetering on the BIG 60! Still LOVE IT & DANCE with it blasting! We had the best music EVER. Yeah! 💃 💃 Some Santana vibes & now I know why I always liked Outkast! So similar, you can't fight the feeling! 😁👏
Funk was and is my all time favorite! I love these people who created these sounds and then some 💖💖💖💖💖💖! I am 60 yes old next month going on 23! I have a beautiful son (21yrs) who keeps me positive and my funk and that has always kept me feeling young! Bless their beautiful souls and I can still outsprint my son! Lol! That's why I will always love my funk! Thank you, you beautiful people! I will never tire from these sounds!💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖😍🥰😘
Takes me back being a 4-year-old in 1979, dancing with my older siblings. We jammed the hell out of this track. Had a Soul Train line in the living room. 😂😂😂😂
I still remember playing this at a ditching party up in the valley. I lived in South Centtal, the funk was all we heard all day long. I put this on, my brother and I got up to dance...after about a minute of watching us get on the funk, everybody got up to funk down. I played the whole Chocolate City album after thus jam. The party went on all day uninterrupted till it was time to head back to school and catch our bus ride home. Long live the FUNK! 😁😂😂😂
OKAY DAMMITT..........STILL DANCING AROUND...........TA DIS ONE..........FORTY ONEYEARZ LATER..... . SINCE DA FIRST PLAYING.........,.. I TOTALLY AGREE WITCHA YA.. .... JUST SAYIN..........
...go and Do You, and know that we are dancing and groovin' with you. 'Nuff respect. A person's pigment group does not prevent them from knowing The Funk. Keep Blastin' out.
Hahaaaa! I love it! Just so you know, music is not prejudiced, it's not biased nor is it racist. And when it hits, you feel no pain. Funk on Susan. Funk on.... 🧡
@@dorciaparham1322 ohhh the golden days. When music was actually music! What an era to witness!!! Now you can't even understand what they're saying. Damn shame. I can't tell you the last time I actually listened to the radio.
EVERYTHING about this song is pure magic! BET, you gotta give George Clinton, Bootsy Collins and the Parliament/Funkadelic crew the lifetime achievement award next year. It's beyond time! The Grammy's should've done it, but you have to do it. And, they should be in the Rock N Roll HOF too!
My generation don't know nothing bout this!!! Real music right here!!! Kendrick, Anderson.Paak, are only two names that comes to mind when it comes down the tribute BET should give for their Lifetime Achievement in June. Hopefully. fingers crossed!!!
This the one song thats played at Black Folks BBQ’s Fish Fry’s cookout Family Reunion’s better then today’s music mind you this song is over 40 yrs old ❤
96GOAT 1996 I like this music and I’m young but you can’t hate on this generations music because the generation before you hated this music and you wanted to show them it wasn’t why can’t we just accept all music
Damien is a ugly ass kid, today's music is garbage! Except for a few artist like Bruno Mars, Beyonce, etc. Artist need to get off the computer and learn how to play an instrument!
Grew up in Highland Park, MI. 1967, Everyone who drove a car had this playing with Mojo on 107.5. This song brings back so many great memories!!! April 2022..
I remember how mesmerized I was when I heard this the first time. EVERYTIME I hear it there is a different level of admiration I feel behind the song, the artists, and originality. They just dont make this kind of music anymore. I'm a straight HOUSE MUSIC head, but you can never deny talent. That moog in the background with Mr Worrell is bananas. Carries the hole song. How can ANYONE not like this song?????? The harmonizing in the background...cult like straight to the vain. All the intricacy and haunting elements. Jeez...where does it end????
Try dancing to that! One of my best memories was seeing the Mothership land in the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. There were hundreds of us singing our butts off. I hope I never get dementia and forget that experience.
Hey BDom, You are taking me back down memory lane now. I use to listen to all of those stations. I was out of Ontario and Los Angeles--the good days. :))
Yup, P-Funk NJ, baby!! Secret is the NJ off beat (you can't dance all hard through the whole song, LOL)!! Burnt it up & sweated out lots of perms, LOLOL!!
Man this is still my jam and that solo guitar 🎸is off the charts...They don't make songs like this anymore and I am so glad I can come here and hear them...
They will never ever make music like this anymore this is at least to me real music these people were pioneers for generations of today. I would definitely choose old school rather than now any day of the week
Absolutely legendary. Song writing , cutting edge instruments and master instrumentalists and vocalists created something that just cant be recreated like pyramids in Africa.
I’m Brown and love this jam since I was like 10 I’m 48 and who’s listening to this classic in March 2022🕺🏼🙋🏽♂️? She’s a freak a big ol freak she’s the freak of the week. The guitar 🎸 is insane in this jam dope 🕺🏼🎸🎸.
I’ll never forget how hot this song was when it was first released. My cousin and I were driving down Wyoming pulled the car over at Fenkell in Detroit, got out of the car and just started bugging on the street.
This song alone should have gotten George a Pulitzer. I couldn’t imagine how my parents, uncles and aunts felt when this hit the scene. Absolute pandemonium
This song is quintessential funk...funk is what's created when you play until everybody needs a damn shower james Brown and George Clinton created this monster.....feed the beast...that is funk.
LOL. When this song first aired on radio in my city, it was around 9 a.m. and I was cruising up the boulevard. That intro alone almost made me crash into a telephone pole. LOL . The song wasn't even halfway over before I pulled up at the record store to see if they had it. It has been my absolute favorite song since it came out in 1979.
@@BillyClark-og3sz well now I can see read your shit chat with he's wevvos..this is a DJ MARIO MARTINEZ MEXICAN AMERICAN FROM LA CALIFORNIA PLAYING THIS LIVE ON JULY 5 2020 DO I BELIEVE .WELL BELIEVE SOUNDS LOW NOW
Went to the chocolate jam in DC 1978. It was the one nation tour and they landed the mothership too. Show started at 1pm and ended around midnight...Rick James , Raydio, Mother’s Finest, Sky, Bootsy rubber band, and other bands I can’t remember. Awesome show. George and the funk mob closed the show. Memories
