Great lesson man. I'm from Brazil, and I can say you really got the hang of it, but the fact that you mentioned it as just a latin rhythm, confuses me. I hope I'm not being too annoying, but I missed some kind of artist reference. Musicians like Moacir Santos, Tom Jobim, João Gilberto, Vinicius de Moraes, Chico Buarque, Baden Powell, Toquinho, Roberto Menescal, Carlos Lyra and many others, really have a role setting the basis for the style. Another detail that I think you didnt mention is the accent on the second note of the bass drum. Originally Bossa Nova is played on 2/4 or 2/2, with emphasis on the second tempo, that came from Samba, another native rhythm from Brazil. That being said, as a old timer subscriber I'm really pleased with your lessons. I believe you do it better than anyone I've seen on the youtube. Cheers! =)
Funny Story! PLUS Exploring The Bossa Nova Bass Line /// Scott's Bass Lessons Heads Ups guys... I've just released a brand new lesson... There's a super funny story in this one for you! You can download the FREE backing track HERE: bit.ly/1gSZ4CE
I've been watching these forms while. Not only for myself but for my students. I have come to see that arpeggios are a big deal and that's 90%ish of the basics of being a good bassist. I hope everyone realizes that!
I'm from Brazil, and we have a lot of Bossa Nova here. Your lesson is very nice, and was very interesting to me, even me being brazilian. Thanks for your great job.
I may play in a jazz quartet and they play blue bossa...I knew the basic rythm root and fifth but not what you call explandation (really appropriate term...thanks) ..it is fantastic and gives many degrees of colours to the song without "covering" it by playing too many notes...thank you Scott for your videos, your humility, your sense of pedagogy, your humanity... Greetings from a french parisian suburbs bass player and chromatic harmonistite...have a Nice day...thanks again. Why do you play with a glove (as Étienne M'Bappe ) ? I love feel the strings on my fingers and i do not understand...
Oh, man! I can't tell you how much I love bossa nova. It is a fantastic style. It is how to use minor scales to create a sound atmosfere not so sad, but instead, vitalistic, beautifull and pleasant. The magic of the little things. Maybe a little melancholic, but so emotional and vital. When I hear some bossa, it take me away to a better world ever. Just as an extra, one of the first bossa nova songs (composed by Caetano Veloso) is called "desafinado" which means "out of tune" in portuguese and spanish just because the use of those augmented chords that you say were not so usual when Caetano did that and someone said that the guitar should be sightly out of tune. However, with this I will probably have a lots of fun. Thank you very much. :)
Scott, I have been watching your videos for a few years now and all students that I work with I recommend your courses. You are very good at what you do and I really like how you relate your experiences and funny stories that a lot of have had happen to us. As a professional I am continuously learning and striving for excellence and your program it perfect for my needs. Thank your or what you are doing it is adding value way beyond what you may think. Great job and If you are ever in Nashville Tennessee I sure would like to meet you. Thanks, Rick TAte
I'm starting to try play bass just cause your videos. Thank, Scott, for a guitar man and future bass man too. PS.: like a good brazilian, I just love bossa nova.
Damn you Scott... You and your perfect tone! Sorry, that was the jealousy talking. I'll get there one day. You hit the proverbial nail ob the head though, I get locked in on the first and some of the poitions of the fretboard. I find it so hard to play in the upper frets (basically, anything above the 7th fret becomes out of my comfort zone.
Hey, Scott, unless you´re soloing, there´s no necessity of playing arpeggios when playing Bossa Nova. The basic line is to play as long as possible the root and the fift, using some ghost notes, similar to the samba style. The less notes you play, the better the results, cause Bossa is a "calm" way of playing samba
I can't really see the print on the headstock of your Fender-like bass. I was just wondering, what brand of bass do you play. You have a great tone. Also, thanks for showing so many different styles and genres for real world bass music to play in band situations. It's really enlightening to see someone do something on bass besides slap and pop. Sure it can be entertaining but slap and pop is what finger tapping is on guitar. People can only listen to so much of it then they ask; so, can you play any actual songs on that thing?
Hi scott, really learning alot as a beginner, my problem is I see what your playing, and the scale you call out, just can't hear your bass when you play...think you can turn it up some...Thank yoy,
The audio from his video is fine. Try using better (external) speakers, or even better: headphones. Most laptop/tablet speakers aren't very good in playing some of the lower range tones.
THANK YOU SO MUCH. NEVER EVER BETTER EXPLAINED BY ANYONE, TO DATE. THE FUNNY STORY OF EVERY : " WANT- TO- BE- A- BAD- ASS- PLAYER OF WHATEVER INSTRUMENT" . REALITY HITS IN AND IT SUCKS. BUT THEN YOU HAVE THE INSTANT FIX :" DUM BU DUM " THE VITAL LIFE PULSE OF MUSIC AND OF LIFE ITSELF. ❤😂❤😂❤😂❤😂 RHYTHMICAL IMPROV POSSIBLE WITH THIS NEWLY FOUND KNOWLEDGE.🎆🎆🎆🏅🏆🏆🏆🎖
Thanks for enquiring about the gloves Scott uses. Unfortunately he has to use them as he suffers from a neurological condition called 'Focal Dystonia'. So... before you run out and buy a pair of black gloves - save yourself the money. If he didn't have to use the gloves he definitely wouldn't be using them. If you do have a similar condition - they are simply tight, thin woolen gloves that you can find in most camping stores or on Amazon. www.amazon.co.uk/EDZ-Merino-Wool-Gloves-Red/dp/B009S4QJOA/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?s=sports&ie=UTF8&qid=1375953899&sr=1-1-fkmr0&keywords=woollen+gloves+merino+redl Hope that helps.
I think you are a very good teacher, but I think you chat too much (e.g. how long you go on about the conversation with the other players). I'm just waiting for you to get on with the lesson..Do listen to it to see if you get my point. Thanks very much.
