I think 2-3 weeks is optimistic. They are going to have to deeply inspect all of those supports. Not just the failed one.

According to ThemeParkPredictions they've had workers walking the tracks this whole week.

@@MentoredEngineer I think it’s going to take a bit more than walking the tracks before all parties are satisfied that no more similar cracks are developing. As many have pointed out this is the first time something like this has been seen in a B&M coaster.

@donkeyentertain

Agree, I’m sure they will move quickly but I think it may still take some time. I’d guess they will have the fabrication shop in Ohio make a new support, hopefully the lead times wouldn’t be too bad if they have the raw material and expedite it. Bigger question is what happens if they find other issues which require addressing, then it could be more extensive downtime both on the technical/manufacturing side, and on the legal side as they figure out who should be paying for it.

Not to mention the most important (in the eyes of CF Corporate) individual who has not been mentioned here..... the all important Attorney! I believe anything even remotely ride-safety related will be treated highly over-cautiously by CFs legal team after the events of August,2021. My useless two-cents says Fury is inop for the rest of the season.

Regarding the fins welded on the existing support - This is likely a request (requirement) by the inspection company that B&M will enlist to analyze the failure. By tying the two pieces together like this, they can remove both of them without risking further damage to the failure point due to collision during removal or transport. I have seen this done in the past, so it isn't uncommon. As far as using a CMM or similar to check the amount of deflection, I doubt that B&M cares to that level of precision regarding the replacement support. (Yes, by now we know that a replacement is being fabricated.) The error in displacement looks to be less than 1". Thermal expansion forces are likely to cause that level of displacement, and it is currently pretty warm in the afternoons in CLT. I suspect that a re-survey of the footers will provide far better information than the displacement after failure ever could. Finally, regarding the diagonal being in tension vs. compression - the diagonal is most likely stronger in tension as there is no risk of buckling as there would be with compression. The footer would need to resist upward rather than downward forces, but this is not hard to achieve with adequate civil design.

It happened right at the fishmouth/saddle. I'd bet money it cracked at the top of the connection where they tied the welds in and the force pushimg out made the crack spread quickly. It was probably also a hacked weave weld that wasn't a proper full or partial pin weld. Replace the old column with a new one
@MentoredEngineer

Might we see some similar additional bracing on the adjacent supports? After all, they've been carrying some extra load as this support failed. Cracks might not yet be visible on those, but they could have been somewhat weakened by the additional loading. Better to be safe if they're looking for a temporary fix to get the coaster back open for the rest of the season. It will also be interesting to watch and analyze the longer term repairs as they unfold. How much additional work will be done to be sure the coaster remains safe for years to come?
@MentoredEngineer
@MentoredEngineer Год назад
As one who has had to deal with structural support issues. The number of load cycles that were accrued on the adjacent structure since the main structure started ithe crack is few (2 weeks, 40 dispataches/hour, 12 hr per day = 1120 cycles). If the load doubled on the adjacent supports, this mathematically isn't enough to change the overall fatigue life because the repair would bring the loads back to normal quickly. I would inspect those supports closely and if no cracks were found return to normal operation.
@jeremycovelli

I would not be surprised if B&M said Furry has to go through their whole entire test cycle certification again.. So the test cycles could take weeks alone.

@davidfirth1
@davidfirth1 Год назад
In my industry, we'd be cutting it out and getting metallurgical analysis done, but our pipe is pressure containing, not structural. If B&M has the MTRs for the pipe and any NDT for the welds, it would be worth reviewing (if I were them). This may be only the first issue if there is an underlying material quality problem. Did they have any manufacturing issues that had to be dealt with, like weld repairs or an unusually large heat affected zone? How was the pipe heat treated for welding (preheat? post-welding stress relief?). Did they check for internal corrosion? Anybody check that the wall thickness is still what it is supposed to be? Until they rule out some things, it doesn't make sense to me to rush it back into service. And that repair looks pretty janky. // Edited to add: Maybe they have checked already and this is why they proceeded.

just a couple of comments thoughts..... this isnt the first time a B&M has had issues this is the only one that has had this coverage. and we are aware. There are other B&Ms that have needed welds and repairs we just arent always privy to the information I am sure there have been plenty of times routine inspections have prevented a similar situation from "propagating" (see what i did there) .... Case in point Goliath at Atlanta I think which has what appears to be bracing along those welds in similar spots. My thought is the purpose of this and the many supports in that turn are to prevent the track from moving too far i would be interested to see a side by side of that same turn and if the track is even moving further than it was before the failure...just curious if the support failed because it was weak or because it was too strong and not letting the track move as it should so it found the weakest point to move.

If that support beam is supposed to be on the outside so the load can push into it, why didn't they account for that when deciding where to put it. Physics doesn't exactly care that it's inconvenient for it to be on the outside. Wouldn't B&B require that it be placed properly?
@RideManDave
@RideManDave Год назад
B&M designed that helix based on the available footprint. They knew they were using a tension brace on that support and did their engineering accordingly. This isn’t a unique helix design among B&M coasters, and historically there are lots of coasters with internally braced curves, often using wire rope instead of rigid members, especially among wood coasters.

This has to be just to stop this from completely failing, right? There's no way a failure of this magnitude on the tallest, fastest coaster around could just be diagnosed, repaired, and signed-off on and presented back to the public this quick. Is there any government oversight of this park?
@RideManDave
@RideManDave Год назад
Carowinds is regulated by both the North Carolina Department of Labor and by the South Carolina Department of Labor. Each State has its own specific rules, but both States regulate and inspect rides mostly in accordance with the standards produced by ASTM International Committee F24 on Amusement Rides and Devices. ASTM standards address design, manufacture, installation, commissioning, operation, inspection, maintenance, and even decommissioning and disposal of amusement rides. All of that can mostly be summed up as, “Do as directed by the manufacturer” while the manufacturer is guided by the design standard.

Oh…my undereducated guess is that those plates were tacked into place to hold the broken pieces in place in preparation for a repair weld. If they didn’t anticipate welding the break, I’m not sure the plates would have that gap across the break.

At Carowinds, the jurisdiction is determined by the location of the primary electrical disconnect for the ride. I don’t know what that means for Fury 325, but I know that given a choice, the park has a preference as to which Authority it would prefer to Have Jurisdiction over the ride.

So you think they will just weld more steel plates around it and re-open Fury like that? I figured that support wasn't saveable after a complete separation like that and they would have to have a completely new support made and sent in, and that this was more of a temporary thing to not add more stress to the track and surrounding supports like you said.
@MentoredEngineer

I used to support aerial work platforms (guys that play with power lines). It is common for issues like these to have permanent field repairs like this. I believe that the temporary fix will be replaced by something better looking during down time.

I would be concerned the metal is brittle from poor heat treatment. If it all came from China you might have a much bigger issue
@RideManDave
@RideManDave Год назад
These things are made from mild steel; the closest thing to heat treatment these supports get is from the welding during the fabrication process. I don’t know where the steel comes from, but the fabrication is done by a shop near Cincinnati, Ohio.
@johnkale6302
@johnkale6302 Год назад
A metal breaking in half is brittle. Any metal that breaks like this from China and forgive my wording it is not made properly. It is a very common issue in Chinese construction probably why the coaster coast 30 million not 100. It is common sense this metal isn’t supposed to crack. It is why they make videos on how horrible Chinese construction is

These mega coasters always end up having problems. These tall steel coasters are sterile they feel like a safe machine. In the old days the wooden coasters that were a real living breathing work of art to ride and look at. Depending on the weather and if they greased the track and which seat you were in gave a different ride. They have torn down a lot of these real rides or altered them so I don't go to parks anymore. A good coaster was the original wild one at adventure world now six flags America and the riverside cyclone in MA before six flags bought and wrecked it. I could go on and on but you get the idea. I suppose the Phoenix at Knoebels is still pretty good but for some reason people think bigger and taller and faster is better.
@DanielBlaney
@DanielBlaney Год назад
The Wild one isn't wrecked at all. When it was moved to Maryland they actually restored the original helix it had that had been missing because of an earlier fire. It still rides great especially for being over 100 years old.
@Jeffs60
@Jeffs60 Год назад
@@DanielBlaney It is not 100 years old it was rebuilt in 1986 and I rode it in 1995 and it was amazing but they changed a few things later, the first drop was made smooth and shorter without the cave in half way down where when you were in the back seat you would get yanked out of your seat, and the 1st half was altered and mutilated and the turn around was wrecked, but the last half was about the same but they added a trim brake before the helix. When they first had it in 1986 it was so wild the fake dummies they tested it with didn't stay in the seat lol.

These rides are safe. This manufacturer has an astonishing safety record. Any injures or deaths are due to the rider not the ride malfunctioning. 131 coasters not one breaking because of a manufacturer defect. The footing settled . That can happen anywhere.

B&M has been making coasters for 45+ years and has never had a single death, barely ever an injury. They overengineer their coasters to withstand this type of failure no problem. There is no safer coaster manufacturer than B&M. They have hundreds of millions of rides on their coasters.
@jonathank2029
@jonathank2029 Год назад
There is no correlation between the size of a ride and its safety. All coasters are subject to both static and dynamic loads. B and M been in business for 30 years no fatalities or major failures. Many of their rides still operate today. This was an isolated incident irrespective of the size of the coaster, just like a smaller car doesn't make it safer than a larger car. Steel coasters last better than wood coasters.
