I was SO happy to hear you bring up Michael Bay in this episode. My first thought after seeing Fury Road in theaters was "This is the movie Michael Bay thinks he's been making for years!"

I think Michael Bay knows his movies are dumb, and he doesn't care. He doesn't seem to care about the actual movies at all. If another explosion will squeeze some more cash out of greasy teenage boys, that's what he puts in the movie. Michael Bay probably couldn't even follow the plot of Fury Road, much less ever hope to make something comparable to it.

Man, I’ve seen this movie several times a year and watched a few dozen of these essay videos. I thought, oh yeah! The shoes. Max brining Nux a shoe was a gesture of acceptance. “The shoe line was a full three act story” Ok what?!? How did it miss that?

In the Splendid death scene there's also a bit of dark irony in the fact that she slips because of the blood from the bullet wound that Max inflicted. He immediately shuts down emotionally after she goes under the wheels because he can't face (again) being responsible for an innocent's death.

Another thing I noticed is that the movie doesn't just write off religion as all bad. If you strip down what the War Boys believe to it's bare bones it's essentially this: If you die while fighting for a cause, you will be rewarded. That's not so bad when you think about it. The danger comes in the cause you fight for. Nux doesn't completely abandon his religion. All he does is find a new cause. In the end he still "Die[s] historic on the Fury Road" and he still asks his surviving allies to "witness" his sacrifice. So Nux still dies with the hope that his actions will be rewarded in the next life and he dies knowing that other will live on and hopefully have a better life because of what he did.
@ChiotVulgaire
@ChiotVulgaire 7 лет назад
That's beautiful, man. It's telling that whereas every other time the phrase is shouted and cried out, when Nux finally meets his end he whispers it softly. Manly tears.
@smurfyday
@smurfyday 6 лет назад
Religion takes away the human ability to choose the cause to fight for. It teaches us to throw away evidence, to value faith above all else. 99.9% of the times, that leads to tragedy, and atrocities.

I saw fury road opening night, saw the taiko drummers truck, the camera circling around to reveal a tower of loudspeakers built on its roof. And hanging in front of it on bungie cords was Coma The Doof Warrior shredding away on his doublenecked electric guitar. I thought, "this might be the most metal thing I have ever seen." ... Then the guitar shot out a massive ball of fire and I almost stood up and applauded right then and there. When the credits rolled a friend from work asked me what I thought of the film. All I could utter was "Holy F**K!". And every time I think of the film My mind is blown by the sheer operatic perfection of it.

My one criticism is that, while it’s been awhile since I’ve seen it, I’m pretty certain happyfeet is about ableism not racism. The main character of the movie is hated bc he’s (physically) unable to do a thing that’s part of and expected by his culture, rather then being hated for being from a different culture. But literally everything else in this essay was spot on (even four years later).

Absolutely loved this, especially the bits about how everyone here is fatalistic in their own ways and the message about being a good ally--because that's exactly what Max is throughout his movies. In the Road Warrior, his past trauma hinders him from trusting and helping the village, but he ends up helping because that's who he is. In Fury Road, his past trauma hinders him from trusting and helping Furiosa, but he ends up giving her his blood because that's who he is--a universal donor. He even says "my name is Max" for the first time aloud right then, because that's when he has fully realized his identity. I thought this was great all the way through, would love to see Star Wars next.

I remember after watching this for the first time how I described Fury Road to a friend not as a movie with cars and dust but as if allegories of feminist theory stepped off the page, elemental and fully formed (with Furiosa towering above them all), and had a visceral, experiential dialogue with each other, and I could go on but eventually words will fail me too (as they do Max) by each becoming proxies for whole conversations like a hypertext laden essay endlessly and exponentially branching. ::breathes:: Which is all to say that you state the position very well, and I quite enjoyed this.

i just love how this film is all show, don't tell. it's been a while since i've seen the film but i love that nux just kind realises that he's wrong and he needs to engage with the other female characters. the women don't have to do a big speech or anything, it's just done visiually and told with the snippets of information we gather naturally. We, the audience piece together what is happening on screen w ith only our eyes, rare for a film. I didn't realise that shoe thing that's so cool!

And the Black and Chrome version (or tunrning off saturation on your screen) looks amazing, the highly accentuated contrast of colors on the movie translates perfectly to a rich grayscale

It has to be Star Wars right? Yeah, Star Wars. This was beautiful, and like always, you've made me see this move in a completely different light. I must go rewatch it right now, and feel deep feels about it.

This is the first video of yours that I've seen, and I thought it was incredible. The revelation of the boot B-plot actually made my jaw drop because I've watched that movie three times and never noticed

Magnificent analysis. I heard the film was excellent, but I was completely blown away when I (finally) saw it. Thanks for pointing out those elements/plot points/techniques which we might not be aware of consciously, but which nevertheless make for an extremely satisfying experience. Again, thanks!

This is such a beautiful assessment of a beautiful movie. I feel like I could pick at least 5 separate videos of yours as my absolute #1 favorite, but this might actually be _the_ one, just because of the many shades of beauty you've exposed here, and (though I'm not sure I can explain why) how much hope and peace I feel having watched it.

I watched this in the theatre, not sure what to expect. When the end credits were rolling I just sat there basically digesting what I just watched, cause my breath was taken away. I loved Miller’s use of the “show, don’t tell”, and for it’s bleakness it was/is a beautiful movie. Watched a behind the scenes; the main reason for all the older cars is due to their ability to withstand the elements... more so than a huge chunk of modern vehicles. Two pennies 😉
