Great tutorial and really helpful for what I'm trying to do. I have 2 questions, if that's ok. First, when I try to adjust the curve sketch after I've extruded, nothing happens; it won't move at all. Second, what would be the best way to join this to a an existing model, or can I attach a new model to this? Thanks.

I've been looking for a tutorial on how to create curved items. I found a very detailed very advanced demonstration. But then I cam across this. It's so simple. I'm pretty sure I'll be able to fix my model with this. Thank you!

You are the Best!!!!!You cannot believe how videos and tutorials I went through to arrive here. Thanks so much!! You helped me tremendously!!! Nearly every other curved surface tutorial had be creating the curved surface first and not the object when I thought it should have been the other way around for what I needed to create (btw a curved front grille for a hot rod) and you confirmed what I suspected and taught me how to do it. Thanks again!!!!

Did mine by extruding the wavy body then drawing the heart and splitting the body. Wanted to go a bit further and compound the curves on the heart so I swept the wavy line (well wavy rectangle) along another wavy line (in the other axis) as the path, creating an object that had compound curves. I then repeated the draw heart->split bodies. I then wanted to write some text into the heart which caused some difficulties as you can't project text onto a surface and a basic extrude doesn't work because of the irregular surface. I used a combination of extrude to object to created new bodies and cut away bodies (has to be done in the right order or fusion bugs out), then a press/full to set the depth of my lettering on the compound surface. Then a combine to arrive at the final product. Thanks for the lesson!

Yep, gave it some thought. My idea was to create the wavy spline first, then offset it to create the thickness and extrude it up. then draw the heart vertically and extrude that through the vertical wave. Your way wins hands down .... again :-). These challenges are fantastic, they get me challenging my approaches to different design aspects.
@DesktopMakes

Thanks Spike, your approach also works well. Glad you're enjoying these design challenges.

I had thought about doing a spline body and a separate heart body and then do a combine intersect to make the curved heart but like you said your way works just as well.

@@DesktopMakes I spoke too soon. Unfortunately it looks like this only works with a smooth face such as you made with the spline. If there are any bends in it that form a new face this will not work as you need to select 1 face to extrude from. Unless I am missing something.

Been doing your Udemy course and now I'm trawling your RU-vid space. I did it by designing the heart in XY plane and extruding, then spline in XZ and extrude to slice away what I didn't want. Thanks for teaching me about the Surface functions. Now I'm off to see if I could add curved letters using that!

This is helpful. It would be more helpful [for me] if it addressed curvature on a second plane and also curvatures that differ along a plane/path. Like, imagine a structure with curvature on both sides, but one side is basically thicker and has a less apparent curve, but the other side is thinner and has a more apparent curve, and these need to meet up nicely in the middle. Also, a lot of people seem to be interested in twists, which I haven't search for nor need. I found a tutorial on making a wood boat design that should cover most of my needs...

Hi Vlad, awesome video again. I almost did it the same way, except when I extruded the heart profile up. Instead I did an intersect to create a new face. Then I thickened the face. The end result is a slightly different. The angle of the faces around the heart edge is different. These faces come out perpendicular to the heart face not straight up like in your technique.
@DesktopMakes
@DesktopMakes 5 лет назад
Thanks Brandon, I just tried it your way to see the difference. You're right. There is a slight difference with the edges like you mentioned. That's good to know.

What if it's warped differently as you get lower, like a face shell where you have curves for the nose, mouth, eyes, but it's not all curved the same from top to bottom?

Is there a way to make an object, like the heart, extruded on a flat plane. After you have the flat heart, to then make it curve based on a specific radius. I'm trying to draw a Mercedes emblem to print, but the trunk has a slight concavity to it that I need to account for.

I tried doing this but my extruded shape isn't following the curve of the item I choose. What? Why? It just extrudes from the object itself, not the one I chose, even though it shows I have the other one chosen.

Make sure your sketch is a closed profile. If you try to select it and it doesn't turn blue that means it's not a closed profile. Simply make sure all your lines meet point to point.
