In this series I'll be covering how to model a number of woodworking techniques in Autodesk Fusion 360.
*If you didn't watch part one (linked below) and would like to follow along, download the result of step one here: bit.ly/f360-step1-files. Unzip the downloaded file, and follow the instructions to open it in Fusion 360*
• Part One: • Fusion 360 for Woodwor... - Modeling the box, bottom, and lid. Covers rabbets, grooves and miters.
• Part Two (This Video): Adding splines to reinforce the miters, modeling the thumb grip, and making the lid open and close using joints in Fusion.
• Part Three: • Photorealistic Renders... - Applying wood materials, selecting the best grain, and photorealistic rendering
• Part Four: • Fusion 360 for Woodwor... - Creating printable plans from the model
-----
Special thanks to Jay Bates' recent video on Fusion as I picked up the "From Object" and "To Object" extrusion tips from there: • Fusion 360: Krenov Ins...

I was tracking in vid 1. You lost me in the first 2 min in this one. Had to watch it a few times. Great video. You explain just enough not to overwhelming.

Nicely done! I did run into a snag when creating the initial sketch for the splines. It wouldn't automatically anchor to the box base sketch, possibly due to changes in Fusion 360 since this video was made or my own inexperience. I did find a way to get past that and am including it here in case others have the same problem. 1. Create a new sketch for the splines as outlined in the video. 2. When creating the 2-Point rectangle, instead of matching the box base sketch corners, draw the rectangle so that it is offset a bit so you can see both the box base and spline rectangles. 3. Select the "Coincident" constraint on the toolbar. 4. Click the upper left corner of the spline rectangle and then the upper left corner of the box base rectangle. 5. Click the lower right corner of the spline rectangle and the lower right corner of the box base rectangle. This seems to manually add the constraints that are automatically added in the video. I was able to follow the rest of the video from that point.

I think you actually need to project points from the underlying base sketch using 'P' command or 'project / include' from the sketch menu. Click on the points on the base sketch that you wish to project to the new sketch (i.e the two corner points) and then you will be able to snap to them. There is an option to auto project which can be found in the settings/design but this is not on by default in my version of Fusion though it may have been in earlier versions.

I just made this box in Fusion to follow along. Great walkthrough. A little bit fast for me as a fusion novice, but by the end of video two I was basically moving at your speed. I think anyone with any experience in other software suites could keep up and anyone just learning will have no problem pausing to catch up. Freaking Cool. I just took on a paid job that is going to include some modeling. This is more detailed than that, but I'll do it for the practice. Thanks Again

Thanks for these videos! I'm coming at it 3 years later, and so some of the changes to Fusion 360 make it a little challenging (still trying to figure out why I can't use the previous sketch to make a new 2-point box like at 5:48, for instance) but it has been great to help me transition from sketchup, all things considered.

I started working in Fusion 360 because of these. I had some 3D experience using Lightwave 3D but your videos definitely gave me a good start here. I am designing a dice tower for a friend that I promised to build. I have already come up with some new ideas that I would not have if I couldn't visualize it in 3D. Thanks for these.
@DNHandcrafted
@DNHandcrafted 6 лет назад
Hi Darin! I was looking through comments, and saw I never replied to you. I'm so glad the series has been helpful - and that you were able to come up with new ideas. That is a part I like as well - figuring out stuff before it gets complicated or expensive out in the shop. Being able to quickly try different ideas in a 3D space can really help.
@DarinBeard
@DarinBeard 6 лет назад
Thanks, Doug. No worries. Honestly, I've done 3D work for years mostly using Lightwave but some Imagine, Maya, and 3DStudio and a tiny bit of SoftImage. So jumping into Fusion 360 wasn't a foreign concept to me but the tools are geared much differently that what I was used to. So just trying to use it without knowing anything was painful and kind of fruitless. Your tutorials really were the insight I needed to make something that was actually useable. I still jump back and forth between Fusion and SketchUp depending on what I need to do but I've designed a few different things in Fusion now and it has considerably helped my design process by giving me a visualization of what I was designing and I have been able to avoid some problems and redesign some things before ever getting to actual wood. So if your goal was to help at least one person with your tutorials, congratulations you made it. :) I think more than just me are finding value in these so job very well done. They are the best tutorials I've watched because they are explained well enough that I understand them easily, they aren't just basic stuff they are actually things that are important and useable, and they move quick enough that I don't start fast forwarding to keep from falling asleep. So when I say they are useful to me, I really mean that. I think you could keep making these every now and then and always have an audience for them. I'll shut up now.

Wow, thank you for the kind words! Feel free to let me know what I can improve. I don’t teach CAD regularly like you do, so I am sure I have a lot I could improve.
@driftlessjoinery5059
@driftlessjoinery5059 6 лет назад
I'm a big fan of constructive criticism, but there's not much you could improve on. My biggest problem teaching 30 people is going too fast. Video allows us all to just hit rewind. I can't use hot keys or shortcuts in class or I'd lose them all. Seriously, you have obviously invested time into these two tutorials. If you were to do another series, you might focus here and there on the 'why' you're doing things a certain way, pitfalls to avoid, etc.
@DNHandcrafted

Great thoughts about sharing the why not just the how. I’ve taught a few web development classes and can appreciate how much slower you have to go in person, especially with 30 people in a class! Thanks again!

Thank you for the video and lessons! I've downloaded the model and see - all components are not joined and can be removed from the model. It can happened accidentally. Why you don't join the components to each other to "fix" the final result? Thank you.

Great lesson! I have one question for you. I have designed the thumb grip, but for some reason it is too high on the sketch. Is there a way to move down all of that work into the correct position? Thank you!
@wolf9545
@wolf9545 6 лет назад
You didn't have to set the joint limits to limit how far the cover can travel. If you go into assemble, then click on "enable all contact". That basically says that all objects are treated as real objects. So for the lid it will stop if from sliding into the box. This also allows you to see if you have any tolerances too tight since it will stop any object from moving if they are too close together. Great video and easy to follow.
@DNHandcrafted
@DNHandcrafted 6 лет назад
Thanks Eric! When I was experimenting I had tried the contact, and you confirmed what I expected about tolerances. I’ll play with it some more. Does turning that on tend to slow Fusion down much? Thanks so much for the detailed feedback!!
@wolf9545
@wolf9545 6 лет назад
I don't think so. I have not really used the contact sets much. I mostly use Fusion 360 for 3D printing but it is a neat feature to be able to use.

@DNHandcrafted
@DNHandcrafted 4 года назад
I’ve not done any 3d printing, so I’m not sure about the STL. But to get one piece, you can use the combine tool and select the thumb grip then the lid, make sure it’s set to join, and don’t keep the tool bodies. You should end up with a single combined shape of the thumb grip and lid.
