When I bought my XJ6 C in 1987 I did the following (it was in excellent physical shape as it had been garaged since the day it was deliverd in in 1975) - (1) Change the ignition points and coil for a Sparkrite Contactless System and heavy duty coil - to this day I've NEVER had a failure to start or running problem. (2) Fuel pumps for Solid State pumps - as number 1. (3) Sent the carbs away to get rebuilt - as number 1. (4) Made an electrical bypass cut off for the AED when the engine warms up - same as 1. (5) Changed the oil pressure sender unit for a racing sender unit that 3 times more accurate - same as 1 plus I get oil pressure readings that are accurate. (6) Changed to an aluminium radiator which is better for summer running - same as 1. (7) Had the exhaust manifold 'Ceramic' coated which eliminated 70% of the under bonnet heat build up in the summer. (8) Got a qualified car electrician to reroute the external fuses from the 'Flitch' panel (bloody stupid place to put fuses - right infront to get wet and corroded) to inside the car in the drivers side foot well - same as 1. (9) Also moved the battery to the boot - same as 1. (10) Got a Kenlowe radiator fan and reinstated the fan shroud that had be n missing (these were designed for a very good reason and should not be taken off) - same as 1 (11) Had the head re engineered for unleaded ( as I live in the UK) in 2000 - same as 1. (12) Use waterless Coolant instead of anti freeze - same as 1. (13) Re routed the engine bay wiring to get it away from the exhaust manifold and wet and had it sleeved in protective non flammable and waterproof sleeving - same as 1. (14) Did the same as 13 for the rear lights wiring - same as 1. (15) Had a full SS system put in from the exhaust down pipe - still going strong. (16) K & N air filter - it really does make a difference. ALL this was done in the first 2 years of ownership. What's the point of having a car that you can apply permanent lasting fixes to but, you don't?. Seriously my friend instead of buying one Jag after another and then spend pennies on keeping them just about running - Why didn't you just buy a couple that you truly desired and then you'd have the cash to fix them properly as I did to mine and if you then wished you could sell one of them at a great profit to fund your next project. It's no good having a stable if these cars hanging around and just about barely hanging onto to' 'Life'. Think and buy wisely - that way you can get the best from them and not have to worry about endless break downs - just a thought from a fellow Jaaaaaag owner. ❤❤

Thank goodness you always drive with your mechanic (yourself) so you can fix problems as they arise on roads far and wide. Love the XJ

When I had that problem with the brakes on my XJS, all that was needed was to replace the hoses between the master cylinder and the remote reservoir. They were leaking. I don’t expect that you will have the same problem, or that you need my advice, but I offer it for what it is worth. When the weather is like that, there’s no nicer place to be than behind the wheel of my Jag. It makes every journey special.

I'm a Brit. So cool to find out that some dude from across the pond is enjoying a classic UK car. And knows how to fix it. Enjoy our quirks. Subbed.

Will be fixing both issues at the same time. Well the exhaust also. Will be a few days in the shop with a long list of items to fix

Love how you've looked after this car, really great. (Wish steering wheel was original but hey, horses for courses). Interesting driving xj6 in snow if I recall correctly - quite scary. Nice way for your children to get to school - in the most comfortable and beautiful car ever built. You'll always be fighting against British Leyland dubious quality.

Have a great 2023! I'm currently adding to my XJ40 an illuminated push button for my electric fan, so that I can see when it is on or off, and manually turn it on in case of failure of my temperature controller. With the fuel price, it has really been worth it. Bonus is that I can now hear the engine and not just wind noise from the fan.

I like that idea. I will do it one day. I just replaced my fan and clutch, so it works great, but I do wish it would shut up when it isn’t needed.

If I had an invention with which I could save humanity, I would ask for the restart of the production of the Jaguar XJ 2 and 3 series in return.

Sounds like you have all those little issues that can easily become major if not attended to. The hose rubbing could be a big problem if it goes on a main road let alone the brake thing. Good to see you out in the car though. Happy New year all.

I replaced the brake booster on my XJ6, but the replacement I received was slightly larger and interfered with the hood closing--something to look out for.

i just bought a 1990 daimler 4.0 225000km for 1900$ Had a Check Engine Light which i fixed and its grogeous to drive. just need to fix the hood paint in the future. Now i got a question: each time i apply the brake, a little red exclamation mark appears on the dashboard. theres also a red ring around it. Whats that? is that normal? Braking seems fine for me, maybe it needs a bleed but it stops alright imo.

Hi! That is a nice car! The codename for this Jaguar model is XJ40. You will see under the bonnet, near to the brake fluid reservoir a round sphere. It is an accumulator and they do go bad with time. It's use it to avoid have the electric hydraulic pump start every time you hit the brake pedal and also to give you a few power assisted brakings in case of failure of the brake pump. You can buy a specific accumulator for your car and it is $$$$, or you can do as I did and buy a BOSCH MERCEDES SBC 0265202070. Still expensive, but a bit less and it screws at the same place. You might have to buy the kind of Vise-Grip with a chain to unscrew your accumulator. Have fun!
@sparklauerei1
@sparklauerei1 Год назад
@@alexandrecouture2462 thanks for your message. so that little exclamation mark surely is 100% a failed brake accumulator? I dont even have a error code or check engine light. just a little red exclamation mark when brakes are applied. cant it also be something else ? But i see that bosch thing is just 120$ so if it is fixed with that what would be a cheap fix.
@LivingWithAClassic
@LivingWithAClassic Год назад
Yes that is your brake accumulator that can’t hold enough pressure. It needs to be replaced if the issue persists
@alexandrecouture2462
@alexandrecouture2462 Год назад
@@sparklauerei1 If you aren't loosing brake fluid then it is 100% the accumulator. Another possibility would be if the sensor on brake pad is saying that pads are due to be changed. In this case, the odometer would display ''PAD''.
