Christopher Glancy's tastefully refreshed Jaguar XJ6 makes Jay envious with its lack of B pillar, comfortable seats, and British racing green styling.

I cant agree with Jay in comparing it to American cars of the same era. the engineering is on another level from rack and pinion steering, independent suspension with coils ( not leaf springs) four wheel disc brakes inboard at rear with anti dive, twin overhead cam engine, optional manual 4 speed with overdrive and then the safety....

Love the Cat! As an owner of 2 Jags, one a 1996 Celebration model XJS 2+2 roadster and my Pride and Joy, a very rare JCNA National Award Winner 1990 VDP Majestic, original, unrestored, one of only 526 identical Jaguar saloons produced only for the US market. Both have essentially the same, but updated 6 cylinder DOHC engine as the '75 XJ6C, and are a blast to drive and show. Multiple Best in Show awards for the Majestic and have run out of room for the trophies. Thanks Jay for the great video.

I had an 88 VDP and loved it. If I remember correctly it was one of the last true Jaguar-made cars before Ford really got involved. That 6 cylinder was the smoothest engine ever. On the highway, there was nothing better. Black with the fawn interior. I don't think fawn is what they called it but it was very very beautiful. I drove that car over 220k miles and wish I'd kept it.

RU-vid themselves need to promote stuff like this more, and not just the latest garbage personalities all the kids are into. Easier to maintain too. Not computerised, just mechanical. I first had an '83 XJ6 (bought in the 1990s), was cheap, timing chain rattled, but it drove fine. Then an '83 XJ12, the legendarily smooth engine (but thirsty). Then a late '70s XJ. Finally a post-facelift XJS. All beautiful cars, all reliable, exceot for the XJS. You will never regret buying a '70s or mid '80s Jag. Incredibly enjoyable cars to drive and just be in. Pure therapy. 'A poor man's Rolls Royce', but I prefer them to Rollers.

I had a V12, but the sedan, a 1974 XJ12L. Last year of the carburetted engines, with four Strombergs. The crossflow intake manifold alone deserved to be in an art gallery. I always that at around 95 to 100 mph on the freeway, that marvelous engine sounded like a jet aircraft turbine winding up for takeoff with that smug 12 cylinder high-pitched whine.

My father, God rest him, purchased a Silver 1973 Jaguar XJ-6 Sedan. Although it was a gorgeous car with a stunning interior and wonderful ride, mechanically it was a nightmare! It was constantly in the shop until the engine block finally cracked and my father traded it in on a 1976 Cadillac Seville. I remember sitting in the back as a kid and would always notice people staring at us when they drove by. After the Seville, we talked him into buying an Audi 5000. He loved that car as much as the Jag, but no headaches!

Wonderful to see this appreciation of the XJC. Sir William Lyons is responsible for the classic lines of this car, and that of many others including the progenitor XK 120 Fixed Head Coupe. The XJC corrects the ergonomic problems of the earlier FHC models while preserving the purity of line and overall balance of the composition. Our family owned many Jaguar automobiles over a period of 50 years, and were able to thoroughly experience the different models and the evolution thereof. The twin fuel tank scheme dates back to the 1950 Mark 7 Saloon. One tank was known to have been used to smuggle contraband back in the day. All XJC models imported to the USA came with a black vinyl top as was the fashion of the time. To my eye the car looks much better without it. We owned a 1976 XJC, and I had the pleasure of also extensively testing the V12 version. Both were notably smooth in operation. The 6 cylinder car preferred to stay below 4500 RPM and had impressive low end torque. It wouldn’t light the tires, but was a satisfying gentleman’s express. The V12 was smoother yet, pulled strongly from any speed, but revved eagerly to 6500 rpm in stock form. Modified engines can see 8000-8500 rpm. US versions of both motors were restricted considerably from UK spec. The biggest difference with competing US cars was the sophisticated chassis. The XJ chassis was a modern European design on par with Mercedes Benz. Fully independent suspension, anti roll bars, twin rear shocks, 4 wheel disc brakes, speed rated radial tires and more were not to be found on American cars. Jay mentioned the Cadillac as competition. The 1975 Cadillac had a huge 8.2 liter/ 500 cubic inch motor but only made 210 horsepower, and was fitted to a much heavier car. I tested ( and drag raced! ) the Caddy against the 6 cylinder XJC. The Jaguar was considerably quicker, and much faster on top. The V12 cars would go 140 mph.

Another nice entry in the series! I like the episodes with the oddball cars and older vehicles best. Yeah, the high horsepower new cars are nice, but nothing beats the sight of a beautiful old car, well maintained or brought back to life. The older cars (looking at you 1936 120B) seem to possess a simplicity and an elegance that a Koenigsegg just cant match. After volunteering at the Packard Museum a while back, I gotta say that I wish Mr. Leno would show off more really early automobiles.

I bought a new 1988 Vanden Plas with the 6 cylinder. Black with the Magnolia interior. It was the best road car I ever drove. The car was almost 4,000 pounds and took the bumps like floating on a cloud but then again the handling was precise and solid. I put over 200,000 miles on it. My only complaint was with the door handles. I had to have them adjusted time and time again, they'd stick and you had to hip check the door to get it to open. Other than that it was the finest car I've ever owned. The clear coat cracked on the hood and Jaguar repainted the whole car for free. They took it down to bare metal and repainted it.

That body style is timeless. The motor is so smooth, and it was quiet.I've loved the 4-door version, and never saw the 2-door.Wow ! Great buy.I hope you and your family enjoy it through generations too.

The nicest XJ Coupe ever! And the owner is a nice guy, modest and well spoken. That legendary six is so smooth! For a fun contrast, check out Harry's Garage where Harry has this falling-apart, souped up 12-cylinder Jag coupe with standard shift. All it needs is a WIDOWMAKER badge on the door.

Jay, you need a lavalier mic. The sound in the test drives is much better than in the garage.

WiseGuy02+ What is the major malfunction with the audio on JLG? This is a chronic problem, and from the sound on this vid, it seems like all the gain is getting lost, not that the sound itself is bad. Idk enough about it, but come on Jay, we love your videos, but AUDIO! - OH MY, MY, MY!

THANK YOU, I thought I was the only one! I only need my TV volume at 15 for every other video on youtube. For this video I'm I'm up to almost 40. Please fix it for the love of god. Put the mic closer of make some sort of adjustment.

Owned one of these in the 90s. It turned heads.Pulled into a filling station in Hamburg and put diesel in the left hand side tank.No problem,I put petrol in the other tank and switched over.Drained the diesel out next the next day via a plug at bottom of the tank.

agreed, but even the 6 cyl is a great car if fitted with a 5 speed manual and is uprated for fast road use.. I know a couple of UK companies that upgrade them, but leave them looking totally original.. One in particular XK restorations upgraded a friends 77coupe.. its his daily driver and puts many modern cars to shame, but apart from a manual box, vented discs and the uprated engine is totally stock..

You mentioned that the car's not fast but as I understand it goes 130mph (0-60 9.8sec & standing 1/4 mile 17.1 sec) which is comparable to a Porsche 911 of the same year (1975) which did 131 mph.

love this channel and this video. I wish you could put a compressor on the audio and boost the levels of the dialogue in post. I have to crank my speakers to full and its still hard to hear. Also you are shooting with a flat color profile on your cameras which is great, but that means you are supposed to add the contrast back in in post production so your footage will really look amazing. Thanks Jay, keep up the good work!

Well, the XJ6 Coupe is not a SEDAN (Wikipedia: A sedan [...] is a passenger car in a three-box configuration with A, B & C-pillars...).

PỺO's MƎᴻTɐʟ MƎʟTdowɴs I never actually knew the distinction between until now :) In fairness if you wanted to I suppose you could also call this Jag a two door hardtop, doesn't quite roll off the tongue like coupe does though :P
