This is a simple teardown and overview of a Mazda FW6A-EL out of a 2017 CX-5 FWD. I go over a little bit of operation and show major components.

I am considered an old man but I have been able to indulge in a new cx30. What I am trying to do is to understand how each part works. Your videos are helping me enormously in this process. Thank you (from Australia) and go in peace.

Awesome. I have a 2018 mazda3 and am in automotive school now. We haven't gotten to automatics yet just manual so far. I love my transmission so much. The manual mode is not the fastest but so consistent and sport mode really tightens up the trans a whole lot. It has some weird quirks that you have to get used that a lot of people seem to have trouble with, like slipping on cold start, the unlocking feeling while slowing down, a stutter here or there if you time an input awkwardly. I've gotten used to all of it and it's such a smooth experience and will still shift fast when you're pushing it. I love that it is 6 speeds too with traditional medium-tallish gearing. It just feels so much more natural than running up and down a 8-10 speed auto.
@21mazda3turbo3
@21mazda3turbo3 Год назад
I love them too. Because of what I do, I have seat time in a lot of vehicles and also much prefer them over most 8-10 speed units.

Yeah the taller gears make a huge difference, my 17 Toyota with a 6speed shifts 1-2-3 then back to 2 if you need the slightest acceleration for a stop all before 30 mph it’s like second gear is hardly even used i’m like why didn’t they make second gear longer but that’s exactly what they did here on the Mazda and it feels world’s better

i own a 2014 6 very interesting to see the design of the 6 speed im sure the later ones are probably tuned better but for me the 6 speed is great for normal daily driving but the lack of a sport mode sucks and the manual shift mode is very rough when shifting down from 6th to 5th and 5th to 4th. Thats under normal spirited public road driving tho if im on track going full send and way up in the rpms the manual shift mode is excellent

From a stop during hard accelerations will this mitigate front wheel spin?

Great videos, mate, very well explained. I have a 2012 cx5 2.2 diesel, and when cold sometimes in between 3rd and 4th for brief moment the revs pick up, it has troubles engaging and then it engages but everything is ok when it warms up. I think it may be a sticking valve for 4th gear in the valve body. What do you think?
@21mazda3turbo3
@21mazda3turbo3 5 месяцев назад
You could have an issue there or some wear beginning in the high clutch set itself that is compensated for when there is some heat in the unit.

My daughter's Mazda cx5 had a P0761 code ( Shift Solenoid C performance stuck off). Changed all the solenoids and wire harness and pumped in new ATF. The gears would not work and still gives the same code. What could be the problem?

For your Mazda 3 turbo transmission servicing do you just do a drain and fill? Or do you do a double drain and fill with a trans filter change?
@21mazda3turbo3

I generally drop the pan, change the filter and clean the magnet. I follow an aggressive service schedule and change about 5 qts outreach time.

Hello, your opinion is important to me. I purchased a brand new 2.0 6AT 2024 Mazda3(114kw) without cylinder deactivation. Transmission jerking, bumps quircks and has some bad things. Dealer says everything is ok and this is normal , but not for me, Because it is very noticeable in a traffic jam. Upshift downshift both are bad feeling. What can I do? I made the initial learning according to your video but all things are the same?

Hello, I have a 2019 CX5 which has a hum at 60 km/h, I put a scanner on it, it says that it is slipping in 5th gear and that the failure occurs at 60 km/h, my Mazda feels good and passes all the gears and stops. they feel good. Can you help me what could it be? I also lowered the crankcase and the oil was in good condition. Please help me

I have a Mazda 6 turbo you think installing the jb4 would cause any problems with the transmission? Seeing a little more boost only about 5 psi over factory boost
@21mazda3turbo3
@21mazda3turbo3 Год назад
I personally don't like devices like the JB4. There are a lot of calculations made in the TCM about how to shift and they require accurate information coming from the ECU. With piggybacks lying to the ECU, the TCM is receiving incorrect torque amounts. This isn't to say you're going to have an issue but it is something to be aware of. The turbo version of the transmission is quite a bit stronger than the regular and should do ok. I'm running a dev tune from DRtuned on my personal car and the trans is perfectly happy so far.
@blackcb7109
@blackcb7109 Год назад
@@21mazda3turbo3 thanks that’s exactly what I was wondering about because I’ve seen a few with the jb4 and it seem like the transmission wasn’t as snappy between shifts as it is stock great info thanks !!
@bassboykevlar
@bassboykevlar Год назад
@@blackcb7109 There's a setting in JB4 called "Auto Shift Boost Redux" that helps a lot with keeping shifts snappy. You can set the value yourself. Say 3, 4, 5 Psi. It will cut that amount of boost right at the shift point.

I took off the pan and changed the filter my 2013 mazda3 2.0 skyactiv other day. 5 qt of fluid came out. Poured 5 qt of new fluid in, ran it to the temperature the book said(122F) and checked the stick while at idle. However there wasn’t much on the stick when running. I didn’t see any leaks. Should I keep adding? The car ran fine.

Hi. I have a question about this transmission. I have a 2013 mazda 3 skyactiv, with this transmission. At low speeds jerks and slips a little. Also it has the dreaded humming/whine sound that indicates the bearing of the drive Transfer gear is Bad. I've read the TSB that describes this issue and found that transmissions build october 2018 and upwards have a modified bearing and casting that prevents the bearing from going Bad. The question is. Can i swap the bell housing from a 2019 or 2020 CX5 N.A for the one found in My car? That way i could fit the "improved" transmission from the cx5/6. I've noticed that appart from the bell housing and the converter, the transmissions are the same.

The updated P/N for each vehicle has the changes done to it. You'll want to purchase the correct one by your VIN. There are case differences depending on the specific vehicle it is installed in.

So these are used in the 2018 Mazda 6 2.5T correct? Whats the torque capacity of the FW6A-EL?
@21mazda3turbo3
@21mazda3turbo3 8 месяцев назад
The 2.5t use a version called the GW6A-EL. Mazda rates the FW series at 200lbft and the GW 340lbft. That does not mean above that power level it will necessarily break, just the rating Mazda has given it. The GW series has some pretty significant upgrades. I have two videos comparing the inside of that transmission and torque converter to the FW series.

@@21mazda3turbo3I’m new to mazda and I recently purchased one with the plans to build it. Historically how much have people pushed before these require upgraded clutches, torque converters, and valve bodies? I’ve had transmissions built (by shops) before just trying to figure how soon or even if its necessary to look into build kits.
@21mazda3turbo3
@21mazda3turbo3 8 месяцев назад
@@1996English Nobody has made enough power to break one like that yet. There are no upgraded kits to buy yet, I'm working on clutches and valve body changes. Torque converter I already have a supplier, the real change will come when we gain access to the TCM. That will be needed to keep everything together at higher torque levels.

@@21mazda3turbo3 Are you an actual Mazda mechanic ? Anyways my 2016 Mazda 6 has been solid. I'm at 119k miles and transmission fluid has been changed twice so far. I'm original owner. So far I'm aiming for 40k miles intervals since I'm a relative normal driver. Not too easy but definitely not super hard on car. Always fully synthetic oil too for engine. I always bring it to dealer for transmission fluid change. Do you think 40k miles is appropriate for this skyactiv drive transmission?
