FX-951 Soldering Station Review - Is This Clone Any Good?

This clone FX-951 soldering Station costs about 1/4 that of an actual Hakko FX-951 soldering station; so what's the catch? Is the quality any good? Does it even work? Are there better direct drive T12 / T15 tip, low cost soldering station options?
If you have such questions or just want to know more about these copied FX-951 stations, I hope this video will help you in your soldering station purchase decision.
Myself, I'm a huge fan of T12 direct drive soldering tip technology. I've been using direct drive soldering tips (also called cartridge soldering tips or smart soldering tips) for over 3 years now, and like most people who have made the switch from traditional slide on soldering tips, I too have become somewhat spoiled & dependent on their amazing performance.
Regardless of what T12 / T15 soldering station you end up getting, I think you'll be very happy with this soldering tip technology. Super fast heat up time, fast response time, precise temperature control, thermal efficiency and amazing temperature consistency are the benefits to you.

Just purchased an authentic FX-951 and 4 tips from Hakko directly. Upgrading from an FX888D. I can't bring myself to buy the knock off units, they're very cheap for a reason.

Another honest and straight to the point /no drama review, well done John, I never thought of owning a genuine Hakko because I always found them too expensive for hobbyists like myself, even now that they make the fake ones I still think of them as first generation technology, I doubt they have changed much since they were first introduced. anyhow, I just love my newly acquired KSGER and was relieved that you prefer them over the fake Hakko.

The technology of this tips are so good that even a fake one works amazing. Thad said, I had to angle the card sensor and stuck something into the buzzer, cause was annoying loud. The original tip just broke and get stuck and I also had to disassemble to take it out...After this "hacks" works beautify, I kinda Love use it

I bought my FX-951 clone on amazon for $37 new, I was wondering if I was going to get it and yes it came. lol Right after I purchased it, the seller raised it to $135 Canadian. When it comes to that card, I just angled the sensor away from the other and boom it works without the card now. Oh also my works on 110 just fine.

Hi John, Hope you get a chance to read this, recently retired and looking forward to learning about electronic projects and some repairs. I instantly subbed after finding this video, from its honest review. Some of my first purchases are a variable power supply and a decent soldering tool. I am leary about buying a power supply from Amazon because most I’m guessing would not be ULC or CSA approved. For a power supply, are there any you would possibly recommend? From your review I will be looking in purchasing the compact KSGER station and a temp tester. If there are any suggestions for other items, that would be greatly appreciated. Also do you have an email address? Cheers, Ken

Hi Ken, I'm first and foremost an RC helicopter hobbyist and only part time electronic hobbyist, so my recommendation/s for a bench top PS are likely different from what would be ideal for pure electronics' lab type work. Personally I have a Riden RD6006 supply which I'm very happy with. They come in several versions based on what you want. The full kit form is generally what most people get: amzn.to/3uyoNn6 It's accurate and stable (a little noisy as one would expect from a switching PS over a linear); but it has the large voltage and current range I need for most RC projects and testing - that's why I choose it. For pure electronics lab work however, you would likely be better served with a 2 channel supply (two independent outputs) since many electronic circuits run on two different voltages with different current demands. No idea what would be best since I's something I've never researched, but I would likely get two Riden RK6006 modules and build my own two channel PS with them. Not saying that is the best route, but again, from an RC electronic standpoint, those two units would work well for most of my needed applications. Electronic circuit lab work generally needs lower voltage and current PS's with higher resolution than what the Riden supplies offer and you may want a linear PS over a switching if noise is a concern, but again it all depends on what you are building/testing. I'm no expert. As for contact info, people can reach me is through my website: www.rchelicopterfun.com/ Keeping in mind I usualy get over 100 emails a day and thus focus what limited time I allow for email responses to RC helicopter specific questions. Enjoy retirement and creating/spending time in your electronics lab :)

Hey John, Have you tried the custom fw for the ksger?

@ Ricardo Cooper, not sure which specific firmware you are referencing; but no I haven't as I rarely mess with that stuff unless I'm forced to due to an operating problem.

The original design is so utterly user unfriendly that it makes the KSGER station so much more incredible! You're such a generous content creator for even entertaining the idea of buying and testing this equally idiotic copy-cat, viewers better subscribe for this sacrifice of perfectly good money! 🙇‍♂️💖😁👍

@Emiliyan Yankov - Thanks for the kind comments, however as I mentioned at the start of the video, Banggood sent me this station to review, so the only cost to me was my time. Agreed; something like this makes one appreciate the little KSGER even more 🙂
