Did our video help you? If so, consider buying us a beer: bit.ly/3feE6tJ
In this video we show you how to perform the valve cover gasket job on a FZJ80 Toyota Land Cruiser with the 1FZ-FE engine.
**Since the removal of the transmission kick-down is pretty difficult, maybe try removing it after you disconnect the throttle body from the intake air chamber and the same goes for connecting the throttle body back to the intake air chamber - connect the kick-down cable and back coolant hose first and then attach the throttle body to the intake air chamber with the 4 bolts.
*TORQUE VALUES*
*Valve Cover Bolts - the Toyota FSM specifies a 15 ft-lbs or 180 in-lbs torque value. We believe this is too high. 160 in-lbs or 13 ft-lbs seems more than enough. We gradually brought the bolts up to spec in 3 crossing pattern passes - 50 inch pounds, then 100 inch pounds, and finally 150 inch pounds. Then we brought the value up to 160 inch pounds and did a final pass. Since these are a pretty small fastener, we don't recommend going any higher than 160 inch pounds or 13 foot pounds. You could probably even go with a less spec and be fine so use your best judgement and don't over-tighten the bolts and break them off in the head.

It's not that hard. More than half the battle is having the right information on how to do it and we give you that in this video. You'd be surprised what you can do on your own with the right information and right tools. Start challenging yourself and you'll be surprised how much you can do on your own. A shop would charge a lot of money for this job. The money you save can go to other things like tools that will continue to help you save money. Have some faith in yourself. If we can do it, you can do it.

at 38:40 what do you mean by loosing the valve cover bolts until you got to 170 inch pounds and you were able to loose one of the bolts?
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 4 года назад
We were testing to see how much force was required to remove one of the valve cover bolts to get a feeling of the torque value that was used to install them. The factory service manual specifies a 15 foot pound torque value for these bolts which seems too high. But, when we did our test, we found it took 170 inch pounds or 14 foot poundsd of force to get one of the bolts free. Does this prove they were originally torqued to 15 foot pounds? No, it doesn't. But, it did give us an idea that these bolts were also not just tightened to a very low spec like 53 inch pounds for the 5VZ-FE motor valve covers. When tightening them down, we got to 150-160 inch pounds and started to cringe that we might break a bolt so we stopped. There is a chart in every FSM that shows bolt sizes and the markings on the bolts that will give you an idea of what torque value to use. It appears a value closer to 53 inch pounds would have been more appropriate so that's why we tell people to use their best judgement when tightening these bolts. If it were my rig, I would just go by feel like I did when I did the valve cover gasket job on my 2000 4runner.

Great video! I might suggest putting valve cover bolts back in same hole from which removed, or using new bolts. The valve cover thickness varies and bolts are worn smooth different amounts preventing them from seating in wrong hole. It’s easy to snap bolts before any bight when inserted in thinner part of valve cover. Luckily the bolt will snap above head so easy to replace.
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 2 года назад
That's interesting about the bolts. I think if you don't over-tighten, you're probably going to be ok.

Really well produced video. I watched it about 10 times and made my shopping list from it (including the magnet and picks for hoses.) One suggestion. Remove the throttle body before the cables. Then you can pull the whole thing away (like you did with the spark cables) and either set it off to the side or easily disconnect the cables to remove the throttle completely. This saved me a bunch of aggravation.

If you only loosen the nuts just enough to remove the cables from the brackets, you can basically maintain the position they were in. I decided to do that job on my 80 Series and boy was that a learning curve, many, many hours, lots of swearing and multiple tools flying across the shed I finally got it sorted, did have to blow the chambers out with a air compressor before I could remove and replace the plugs. Have you got any tips to stop this from happening in the future? Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺

@TimmyTheToolman 2 года назад
Glad you like the video. You're very welcome. I'm not sure if I understand 100% what you mean by the wires melting but I think you're saying the part the slides over the spark plug itself disintegrated. Anyway, no, I've never seen or heard of that. If the engine overheated that bad to melt the wires, I would guess you would have blown the head gasket and/or cracked the head.
@AnimalFriend969
@AnimalFriend969 2 года назад
@@TimmyTheToolman perhaps I didn’t explain it correctly, it wasn’t a thing of over heating as far as I could tell, simply they were stuck fast, would not budge a single millimetre, I’m a strong bloke and I couldn’t make them budge, I ended up using really long needle nose pliers to get a better grip down in the chamber still nothing so I had to resort to breaking them piece by piece till I got to their bottom red ring, that was what was stuck fast, that took so long to pull out using seal picks and even a fish filleting knife, all wires but one were stuck like this. It was a thorough pain in the bum but a valuable lesson learnt, at least now I know to expect it and now I know how to tackle it if the situation were to arise again 😊

@@TimmyTheToolman Whelp ... I got the truck! Now I start to follow your lead and amazing instructions. I have a channel and will document the entire build. Question: do you need to do the half moons or can you just leave them alone and put the gasket over them?

@@AZRubicon1 I would definitely remove and reseal the half moons. It would suck to do all that work just to discover one of the half moons is leaking. Do it once and do it right. Have fun with the rig.

Thank you Timmy. I have to do a full engine gasket overhaul on a 1994 Toyota Land Cruiser and this video is golden. Truly appreciate it.

Love your videos brother, much appreciated and subscribed. My question is regarding using oils vs silicone assembly grease to lube things like gaskets for oil pump cover, crank seal, and the spark plug rings on valve cover. I notice you said to use a little motor oil to insert the new plug rings. Would silicone assembly grease be better for longevity? I'm always hearing not to use certain petroleum greases to not degrade the rubber and using motor oil on those plug rings seem a little iffy for me and I'm about to do this job so any info would be greatly appreciated. Be blessed!

The assembly oil or grease is just for the initial assembly or start-up of the engine. After the engine is running, things like spark plug tube seals or crank seals will be engulfed in engine oil. You don't need longevity.

@@TimmyTheToolman I see your point here. Thanks brother. But what about oil pump cover o-ring? Here's a link to what I'm referring to exactly. The guy uses "transmission assembly lube," as he calls it at the 31:30 mark of video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CgYrNQ9n4Kw.html What's even more bothering right now is the guy at Napa actually recommended me Permatex Ultra Black Maximum Oil Resistance RTV Silicone Gasket Maker to actually add to the o-ring to add more gasket??? So should I or shouldn't I add RTV gasket maker to o-rings for guaranteed no leaks? He says mechanics should but don't do this. lol I think I want to trust OEM specs and mechanics before NAPA but these type of comments and opinions can mess things up if we don't make the right decision.

@@JR-rp7vr Assembly lube is fine. I actually just bought some myself. I wouldn't use RTV along with the o-ring unless there was obvious pitting on the block and I was worried about the o-rings ability to seal the pump to the block.
