Girolamo Frescobaldi "Aria detta la Frescobalda"
from "Toccate et canzoni, libro secondo" (1637).
The "Aria" is first known set of variation on an original theme. There was a tradition to compose variation on well-known (anonym-folk) themes like "Folia" or "Romanesca" and Frescobaldi was the first who broke this rule and take his own theme.
Transcribed for lute and played by
Konstantin Shchenikov.

é una soddisfazione per me ascoltare Frescobaldi e la nostra musica suonata almeno dagli "stranieri" visto che non vedo commenti italiani qui sotto! :-( Thank you very much anyway for the upload! It's so sweet and well played! :-)

Lo so, purtroppo spesso non riconosciamo la nostra stessa bellezza, ti consiglio di ascoltare anche Dowland, un compositore inglese dello stesso periodo. Pensavo di registrare la sua Fantasia n7

I come back to this again and again, and each time it makes me shiver with the feeling of a bygone sensibility to the pace and polyphonic sound of the lute, but only this performance moves me so. I hope you continue and perform in venues worthy of your skill

Your comment reminds me of a quote regarding the lutenist Francesco da Milano (about 100 years prior to Frescobaldi). The image is one of several people lost in contemplation while listening to the great master. At this time music didn't need to be loud or rambunctious. The quiet music of the lute was I think the most highly prized of all.

Extreme respect to you. Thank you for keeping lutes alive for those who love them. No matter how unsettled my mind may be, the sound of a lute brings me peace. Be blessed.

@ElGato1704 your very welcome . I wrote this little joke, when John Dowland, and Franchesco Dal Maliano got to the gates of heaven, St Peter says come in gentle minstrels. The place was filled with lutes. And they asked "Great, where are the strings?" Peter replied "what the hell are strings?" The 2 lutenists looked at each other and asked "Are you sure this isn't the other place?" You have a superb gift my friend. R

Beautiful playing! Not an easy piece indeed. Your lute is so small-bodied yet it sounds very well, and even the deepest basses are well supported. What's the deepest note (F/G) ?

HELP: While preparing to perform "La Frescobalda," by Girolamo Frescobaldi, I read that it was a COMMON FOLK tune offered up by a volunteer in the crowd for G. Frescobaldi to extemporaneously perform variations before a crowd at St. Peter's cathedral in competition to a pretender to his appointment there as organist, for which Frescobaldi played 124 variations, and was thus proclaimed winner. Does anyone have knowledge of this story, or otherwise?

Very beautiful and there is a lot of heart in your playing. Great! Btw, wasn't "Guardame las vacas" by Luys de Narvaez the first published set of variations in 16th century?
@improvising_lutenist
@improvising_lutenist 10 лет назад
Danke Jürgen! Sehr angenehem zu lesen! It is not first example of variations at all, it's first example of variations on own theme. "Guardame las Vacas" is folksong, not by Narvaez. "Aria" is a variations by Frescobaldi on theme by Frescobaldi, no one composer did take before own theme for writing a variation, only well-known songs.

Lacks a bit in unequality. Would give more rhythm. I also would wish it a bit faster, but with some unequality, it would already be quite good.
