Everybody also goes to LGB for g scale stuff but I think USA trains are the real stars of the g scale world. Such great value and quality!

You will get hooked especially when you combine the love of being outdoors or gardening with the love of big model trains running as you relax to me is perfect...I still model HO but like the Large Scale so much more. Looking forward to your build.

Nice set. Looking forward to this layout project. USA Trains produces some nice models. I’m waiting for the day when G gauge locos run on rechargeable batteries with usb c connection (like everything else haha) in lieu of a power supply.

Nice starter set. We are just getting in to G gauge. Are train show this last weekend had some great buys on the G gauge trains and one guy built alot of buildings we got at very cheap prices. it would have cost us more to but the wood to build are own than to buy what he had. Love a good train show and swamp meet. GOD BLESS 🚂💖🚂💖🚂💖🚂💖

WARNIG!!! Once you own G scale model railroad equipment, all other smaller scale models seem like z scale no matter how big they are. Ho scale which may seem comfortably sized before hand suddenly feels like you need a magnifying glass to enjoy it 😂. I fell down th 1/29 scale rabbit hole, and never came back. With one small purchase you can go from recognizing the chunk of land around your house from yard space to layout !😂

Nice starter set, very similar to the one the wife got me some years ago. good to see USA trains is still around. If you were in the Chicago area I would sell you all the track I purchased years ago that I never got around to building....it was a lot less expensive 15 years ago! lol

@@StevesTrains I want to say she paid half of what you did for that set back then. I bought a lot of track and rolling stock that never got used after she passed away. I wouldn't even want to know how much it would cost to ship that heavy brass track...probably more than what i paid for it back then..lol I'd love to get rid of it all, just don't know how to do it

Thanks for calling it "G gauge" and not "G scale" because it's not G scale, which is 1:22.5. USATrains are A scale, 1:29. It makes it very confusing for newbies. I settled on USA Trains from Charles Ro because of availability and quality. I spent a lot of money on rail clamps and replaced all the rail joiners in an effort to keep my trains running on DC rail power. I finally gave up and installed Revolution radio/battery because keeping the track clean became such a chore, that I just wasn't running them any more. A bonus was getting sound with it! I would like to recommend Reindeer Pass as a supplier. They were great to deal with. Thanks.

Yeah, I saw some locomotives that had battery supplies already installed. That seems the way to go. You have plenty of room. I’ll probably make that conversion with mine at some point.

If generic diesel or steam sound is OK with you, then Revolution is a great system. There's another system that has prototypical sound files, but it's more expensive. Revolution sounds great to me, and has horn and bell, too. Plenty of room inside to install the battery so you don't need to permanently couple a car or dummy unit either. @@StevesTrains

I've been collecting G scale trains for quite a few years now and I didn't know this. So which is the correct scale for the track gauge then? I always assumed it was 1:29, and the 1:32 ones were undersized.

1:32 is 4'8 1/2" standard gauge on the 45mm G gauge track. 1:29 is slightly too large, maybe 4' 4" ir something like that. Think of it like HO versus OO scale, both running on 16.5mm gauge track. The larger scale is still close enough to look OK. I would have done 1:32, but the availability of 1:29 was a lot more, and the gauge wasn't far enough off to bother me.@@crimetimeproductions6340

@@crimetimeproductions6340 To be on scale to the tracks it should be 1:22,5, that's why LGB only produces narrow gauge (G-scale) locos and cars. But of course there is a high demand for standard-gauge rolling stock, that's why the scale is all over the place...1:19, 1:22,5, 1:24, 1:29. In Germany it's often jokingly called Gummi-Gauge (Rubber-Gauge). The whole thing is a big can of worms, G-Gauge, 1-Gauge, 2-Gauge, F-Gauge, II, IIm, IIe, IIf, IIp.... And I hope I'm not totally wrong.

Congratulations you have started the journey to the dark side. Once you get it outside be prepared to become more addicted. One thing everyone in our local club has said they wish they did raised layouts vs on the ground because they are easier to maintain as you get older

You and I seem to be on parallel paths, as I’ve shifted my secondary focus away from O scale to large scale. I have an Aristo C16 2-8-0, and a Kalamazoo 4-4-0, along with a Bachmann 1/29 Peter Witt trolley. I plan on focusing mainly on narrow gauge modeling and trolleys in large scale, and hopefully I can scratchbuild some streetcars and some narrow gauge rolling stock😊😊😊All of my scratchbuilding is going to be in 1/24 scale. I’m looking forward to seeing where this goes for you!

Wow Steve, you're brave! G-Scale is sooo pricey and big. If it were me, would likely replace that track with much large radius track so it both runs without the risk of derailment and just looks better. Those tracks you got with the set were so tight with the turn the train itself just looks silly. We know that's not your fault, nor the fault of the makers. It's a starter set. These reasons are why I will always be an N-scale guy. But I digress. Great video! I look forward to seeing what you do with this set!

Funny thing you say they're pricey. Here's the thing, about 17 years ago I wanted to get into model trains. My kids were young then, I was looking at N scale due to price. Then we went to a railroad museum where they had a great G scale layout, and my daughter who was about 11 then, and my son at 6, LOVED them. I found a starter set for $99 on sale. I then started buying on eBay. G scale track lasts FOREVER, and I can find used solid brass track pretty cheap. Then I started buying used engines, and found lots of great stuff under $100 and bought several engines and groups of rolling stock. Pretty soon I had a 12.5 x 8 foot G scale mini layout in my basement that I could run 4 trains on! It was awesome. I think my overall spending for the first 10+ years was less than a lot of people spend on HO and O scale. I admit, I scour every place I can to find good bargains. Over time I've bought a bunch of O scale, and N scale and HO Scale. However, I LOVE my G scale. I built a 26 x 12 foot modular layout I take to train shows occasionally. The trains are built well, easy to work on... I can fix almost everything myself.

@@tedansley For me, it's less about the price and more about the size. One can fit so much more into a given space than with HO or larger. It's the deal-maker point.

I initially wanted to get a huge SD70ace in G, but then would need a big loop of track and wasn’t sure if I would be able to fit that in the garden bed or not. Plus that cost a lot more than the whole starter set.

I’ve thought about it from time to time, but narrow gauge G scale. Still, would be a lot of fun to have a “small” g gauge switching layout, but I think I’ll stick to 3-rail scale o gauge for my upcoming larger switching layout.

I haven't used it much, only a couple of times (this set is currently packed away until I get around to building a small garden railway), so i can't speak too much about it given my limited use, but it worked well enough.

Yes, it does get dirty more quickly. If you run battery, it's not a problem.

Lgb are great quality locomotives but not for the prices they go for in America. There's good deals out there on them You just got to find them.

Buy used, the engines last forever, and you can get some good deals. I have a ton of LGB Engines and I only ever bought 1 new, because it was a 50th anniversary edition and it was small.
