I think the Fishman:s have a slightly tighter and more focused sound. I have them in a 1988 AM Standard Telecaster and they're fantastic. G&L sounds good too.

I think both guitars sound amazing. To me, this just proves what I've always thought about the G&L MFD pickups. they are definitely not a Telecaster and I don't think Leo Fender meant for them to sound the same. they're completely different pickups. I have a Fender Telecaster and a G&L ASAT. And they're both great, depending on the situation. Nice review! That Rev guitar does sound great! 👍

We’re missing half the picture without touching the tone and volume knobs, mate. The PTB system is still near Leo’s top of list of achievements. The growl out of the ASAT was obtained wide open-you want to compare their full spectrum of possibilities, eh?

Isn't the PTB circuit only applied to the strat style guitars from G&L? I could be wrong.

I have a G&L legacy I had built in 2013. The quality is 2nd to none. Just wondering how the Rev. compares in build quality?

All Reverend guitars are top notch. The Classic Tribute felt pretty solid but I wasn't a fan of the unfinished neck. The pickups can be a bit dark in some situations.

MDF pickups sound pretty woody to my ears ;-) I guess you just switched guitars, but IMO one has to a) adjust tone knobs / volume and b) the amp settings to get a sound that is satisfying. Changing the guitar without doing that will favour the guitar which better suits to the current amp setting, but must not mean that this guitar is "better" or preferable overall. I have an Asat Special with the larger MFD pickups and like the sound, but find that the amp has to be dialed in quite differently to when using other pickups. Also working the tone knob is very important for the Asat Special -- maybe also for the "classic" MFD pickups!?

Both sound great but the Gristlemaster is closer to the "tone in my head" I've been seeking.

The G&L had nicer tones over al the in my opinion the reverend sounded more meaty in the clean neck position though.

I think I am feeling the G&L tones better. Of course, the Fishmans will be more consistent and have more tone options. I'm sure you can dial the amp settings to make up the difference. Tough call.

So, MFD is really a different animal than most T style pickup. Not the kind of sound you're looking for as country player. It's high output yet offer clarity as well.

They sure are. I recently got a Pete Anderson model and it has a more "traditional" country sound. The fishmans are very beefy while still very clean.

I am a tele guy, for sure. My Ted Greene '81 custom shop '52, would fit your bill, so would a few others. Most every one, including one with Duncan 'Phat Cats' can pull off chick'n' pic'n'. Of note all my electrics have treb passes. I did not like the ASAT big (almost P90 size units) The classic units are working just fine for every thing I do. They have a .002 uf treb pass. In JBLs , Jensens or Celestions with Fender 18,40&80 watt heads country licks are georgious to my ear. I am finding the bridge needs a repot, after adjusting poles. Have fun.
