They're reliable. The G wagon is a machine you can trust it won't let you down when you're in the middle of the desert and the nearest town is atleast 500miles away. Although nowdays coilover springs are pretty reliable too. Although good quality "darkar spec" coilovers are mighty expensive and for ultimate reliability you'ld want two of them on each end like the Dakar rally cars.
Leaf springs are only better for supporting heavy weights, that why they are used primarily on truck and commercial vehicles. coil springs on the other hand is better for suspension articulation and therefore makes more sense on a vehicle designed to prioritize wheel articulation over towing and payload.
Leaf springs are used on heavy vehicles that work under harsh conditions. Coil springs are not a good choice for an offroader because they are much more prone to breaking under stress than leaf springs. Coils would be fine on an offroader if you are willing to pay to replace them often but what is to say they won't break while out on the trail? Having your vehicle towed back won't be very easy nor will replacing the suspension right there. Coils are usually better but not for this application.
Actually better than any 4x4 SUV, because they can not do anything offroad cause they're packed with pointless electronics and other unnecessary stuff, while G is a proper purpose-built unbreakable offroader with locking differentials and leafspings suspension. Used to have much older version.
No. Leafs fracture. Coils only break if there progressive wind and the small locating coil breaks away (most 4x4s are constant winding which is when the spring stays the same diameter from top to bottom. Much stronger for the application.
True, for the G your paying for the handbuilt engine, and other human labor and dressings. I'm sure a fundamental G class would cost the same as a Defender or Land Cruiser, but those are only sold to the military as far as I know. Maybe you can request it.
I have had 2 G55 (2008 and 2009) and I would say they sounded deeper with much more growling. G63 is "only" a turbo which NEVER has a sound as a supercharger. Listen to my videos if you want (this was my 2008 G55 with 500hp). Not sure, but I think it sounded way better. Will have a ride in a G63 and check it out...
i also thought that but the other week i went to mercedes and we started one up and... seriously u cant say that its sounded better if you dident hear this one live
But the G-Wagen is a quality machine. Overpriced, yes but it will get the job done if it is the offroad version. The offroading capabilities of the offroading version are as good as or better than the top 4x4 SUVs out there
Well the new one is packed with pointless electronics AND is a good offroader lol. I am looking to buy an older one but there are not that many here in the US since the only ones here came over on the grey market. My answer to anyone saying it isn't very good because it is old technology is: Well I wonder why it is the vehicle of choice of many militaries? Heck even the Marines have a couple hundred of them and they like them better than they liked the Humvee

You see: To those who think this car is pointless, other cars like Lamborghini will also seem pointless because YOU would babble how it makes no sense driving 400hp+ car in an area with speed limit... Unfortunately in that case, for you, any car that costs over 30k will be disappointing... Virtue? Go buy YOURSELF a KIA or TOYOTA and be happy

Its perhaps the most stupid car ever made and will only be bought by posers. The G wagon is built to go around deserts, mountains, forests etc. and is not very good on the road as it's soft and rolly which it needs to be to go over huge rocks off road. The G63 will never be able to work off road and because of its spartan squidgy suspension, it'll be a nightmare to drive on road. So what AMG has made here is a SUV which is useless both off road and on road!
