Gabapentin is a medication that is used for a lot of different things. We use it for back pain, nerve pains like diabetic neuropathy, fibromyalgia among other things. It can be a great medication but has some potential side effects and issues that you need to know about.
FLyrica or Pregabalin is a medication that is used for a lot of different things. It is used principally for conditions of pain involving the nerves. These include diabetic neuropathy and fibromyalgia among other things. There are some significant risks though while taking it that you need to be aware of and there are some conditions that you may be taking it for but may not be appropriate. in this video we are going to go over those uses and side effects to help you decide with your doctor if it is right for you.
Follow along on:
Medications should not be the only approach you take in treating your conditions. Treating from several different angles is usually the most effective.
To help with your fibromyalgia you may consider some of the recommendations found in this book. Trigger point therapy can do wonders in calming down your pain.

For Diabetic neuropathy there are several studies showing that by taking Alpha Lipoic Acid you can achieve some relief. Here is an example of what I'm talking about:

I was safely on opiate pain medication for chronic pain for over 10 years which allowed me to have as close to a normal life as possible, then the CDC announced it's insidious "recommendations" which still wasn't a problem as my doctor knew I needed to continue. Unfortunately my doctor died and had to find a new one and that was a nightmare. I never had an issue yet they decided to force taper me to 30% of what I was taking and put me on gabapentin. Now my life is unnecessarily a lot more difficult and I don't see a real benefit with the gabapentin. Please do not confuse addiction with dependence and stop punishing people who haven't done anything wrong and who are already suffering beyond what most people understand.

Word for word your story is mine. Gabapentin did nothing for my pain, and I broke out with huge boils on my back and just. Rolling over onto one would wake me, and I was trying to treat them with salicylic acid. Once, I pressed on one, and that was disgusting. What came out was under such pressure! Amitriptyline made me manic, and Lyrica I lost all sensation in my hands. I couldn't feel hot, cold, or pressure. I'd test the tap when drawing a bath and burn myself getting in. I couldn't pick up coins off a counter. My life is over at 43.

Yeah I have been taking Pregabalin low dose for fribramyalgia for about 2 years & I need something different that isn't addictive. The 1st Dr had me on gabapentin & said it was all natural... non addictive. It made me feel horrible with no help. I was being treated for a pinched nerve also...

VA give me hydrocodone for years. My back has deteriorated over years, They said I couldn't get addicted, ha. Tired of the goofy feeling I said no more. Now they give me gabapentin but it only helps my lower back. It also makes my head goofy. Don't like it but there is nothing to do about the pain. Take it before going to bed and mid morning my mind clears. Don' t take much if I don't have to. I live with a lot of pain . You will as you get older like me. It seems that life. But the most I can do is to stay active, walk, work with your hands and legs as much as possible. If you set any time at all the body jumps all over you again.

20 years ago I fell at the local mall and broke my right humerus to pieces and when I landed right on my left elbow when I hit the ground. Three days after I had the arm "set" my left hand felt funny and my little finger, my ring finger and the one next to it (I don't know the correct name for that finger!) got hyper sensitive X's a zillion. It was awful! If those fingers touched anything, it felt like I was getting electrical shocks. I had to have someone help me put my coat on cause I couldn't bear for any of the fabric to touch those fingers. Well, I had to suffer for a year because my Fx's arm didn't heal right and I had to have an OR to have plate and pins put in. Only after that, did myself and my Doctor try to find out what was wrong with the left hand. After quite awhile, a chance meeting my doctor had with someone led to my diagnosis. I saw a neurologist and what I had was "Chronic Sympathetic Syndrome". I had nerve conduction tests and the doctor said that when I had my fall and landed on my elbow, the nerves were going crazy from that - it is like hitting the "funny" bone - he gave me Gabapentin and it was like a miracle! He told me it was a an epileptic drug? Anyways, I am still on it, and like you, it helped give me that great quality of life.

Lol ohh God bless my step mother, I am blessed with her,lost my mother on my 19th birthday and she was already in my life so it was different than some people but obviously she didn't take my mother's place no body could ever she was a one and only in many wonderful ways,geese I miss her so very much & it's a hurt like no other all bottled up in my stomach and no need to go there ,my comment is long enough...so yes gabapentin works if u let it get into your system...don't ever give up on yourself no matter what!!!

Now life is miserable and makes me wonder if it's worth living. I also have vision issues, nightmares and just feel rotten. Thank you too, for saying Lyrica is the same as Neurontin. I took that for ages when much younger and it did nothing for me. I am allergic to salicylates, which fill my lungs with fluid and before we figured it out I had had many pneumonias, 2 CT scans for bleeding lungs. Today I decided to go back to Advil (salicylate) and let my lungs take their chances. I am So Fed Up with the medical profession.

Wouldn't everybody love to go to a holistic doctor for their issues? On top of my regular medicine medical degrees, I went to school to be a natural path but it's not covered by insurance by most people in the USA. Therefore we have to rely on doctors that are and as you know they're not talk much about nutrition or anything when it comes to the human body's functions when you do or do not do something like eat take supplements be vegan. Which I highly recommend. I could go to myself but I cannot afford what I would prescribe as far as food and some supplements. So I don't take gabapentin I do take other things that are addictive and if you are in a place in your body that you are not functional I don't understand why somebody cares if you're addicted. It's a trade-off it's an unfortunate one but it is a trade-off my life will be changing soon so I would imagine that I will ease off the other things and possibly never need them we'll see?

I had to start using a wheelchair a year ago because of pain while walking and balance issues. My legs are tingling bags of lead. I finally couldn't take the pain and they started me on Gabapentin about 4 years ago. Gabapentin makes the painful tingling somewhat bearable. I was finally diagnosed a few months ago (!) after a nerve conduction test. They don't know what's causing it. Even brain and spine specialist is stumped. My question is: if you've had neuropathy for 10 years, how the heck can you be riding a bicycle?

Thank you Doc. I have 100% service-connected PTSD due to serving in Baghdad (U.S. Army) and Type-2 Diabetes and was prescribed Gabapentin for my diabetes and foot pain. The rumor mill was going around my friends and family thinking Gabapentin was a psych medication for my PTSD, but as of right now it just makes me a little sleepy, nothing else. So now I got the right answer from a professional, because the doctors at the V.A. will tend to lie to me at some certain medical issues regarding my health. I got off the cocktail of psych meds V.A. prescribed me because that was just making it worse on my mentality, now I constantly have permanent shakes and unable to comprehend to what people are telling me...thanks V.A. !
@markwalker3499

I do not think the VA lies so much as has a party line they are required to read from a script. Like when I needed to gain weight and they told me the VA does not approve of steroids because they might make you feel good but otherwise have no efficacy. That is the official position and it is absurd. But the VA requires them to repeat it. On the other hand I was a nurse for about a dozen years and a medic in the service, I know a line of bullshit when I hear it at the VA. So I just ignore them and buy what I need off the net, sure it would be safer and cheaper to get it from them, but they have political position that take priority over your health or mine, so hate to do it, but I just go behind their back if I need something.
@AmericanSoldierSioux1969
@AmericanSoldierSioux1969 Год назад
@@markwalker3499 that sounds like the best idea when it comes to buying off the net and agree on that. Just be careful, I've been watching a lot of Fentanyl laced pills on the news lately including laced Halloween candy. I just recently changed VA doctors because mine kept telling me he can't do anything to help me because of my type-2 diabetes and I'm not watching what I eat, so therefore he pretty much ignores me, but I guess I'm ignoring him too. Mentally, I've gotten worse since the cocktail of psych meds I've been given through the years, now my comprehension to try to understand anything is out the door. I now have to ask a person twice what he or she said to me and to slow down when speaking to me, my mind is very slow now. If I went back in the Army and back to Baghdad I'd be killed instantly or accidentally kill one of my battle buddies due to my comprehension. Even when writing this, I have to re-read this several times in order to remember what I wrote. But the craziest thing that always triggers my memory has no sense or meaning....I can remember classic game show theme songs growing up as a kid, but I can't remember what happened 5 minutes ago. Nothing makes sense anymore! I appreciate your comment my friend and I wish you lots of luck.

Take supplements that your body needs. That works instead a life of chasing the medicine for the side effects. But eventually the pain cannot be tolerated by 75 mg so another doctor ordered to make it to 150 mg every night. After taking it I felt weird with my heart, like the feeling of having a heart attack and I cannot feel my lower limbs for months. I stopped the medication for a year before I was diagnosed with heart and liver conditions. I had 2 different months with a blood test that indicated a heart attack. I'm not sure if that relates to pregabalin, but while I'm taking the medication I developed nervous, irregular heartbeat, swollen legs and feet. And the feeling of seizure attacks was experienced. 😢

It is a prescribing doctor's responsibilty to inform the patient for whom he/she is prescribing a medication of any and all side effects. Lazy doctors and poor doctors will fail in this regard. Remember, it is the patient's responsibility to protect their own life, more so than any doctor! One of my healthcare degrees is in pharmacy. I've lost count of how many patients for whom I've filled a prescription have asked me for the possible major side effects. After doing so, they tell me that I'm smarter than their doctor, for which I can honestly say nothing. Nonetheless, any patient with a doctor prescribing medications, especially those that also cross the blood brain barrier with very likely psychoactive side effects, should first research a better doctor and replace the bad existing doctor as soon as possible, for the bad doc poses a very likely threat to not just the patient's well being but more so to their life. - a former retail and hospital pharmacist of 30 years practice. A family dr will know the basics of heart disease, but a cardiologist will know all the intricate details because that's literally where he has focused his study. Been using it for sciatic pain caused by a herniated disc. Taking 300mg, every 8 hours for over 7 month has made a huge difference in reducing the burning sensation in my leg. The only side effect I’ve noticed is dry mouth but that went away after the first few months of being on the drug.

I have been fighting back issues with leg nerve pains (unable to walk at times without opiates). I have CKD probably most due to the various pain and anti inflammatory medications I used to take for at least two decades, up until about five years ago. Pain Clinic started me on Gabapentin which made a very big difference to my life. Gave up the daily codeine, except for serious attacks, without any withdrawal symptoms. I still have codeine scripts but rarely ever take them. Had three operations in 2017, for which I had to persevere with pushing the surgeon for (disectomies and laminectomy), last of which finally made a big difference. Neurosurgeon said he won’t do any more operations, so I try to be careful not to aggravate the situation further. Tried all the other alternatives, including CT guided needles, all to no avail. I reduced, over time slowly (essential), the Gabapentin from 12 (100mg) every 24 hours to only 3 daily. Operations have made a big difference but I still get some nerve pains which I manage with only 3 (100mg) capsules now. Stopped the evening restless legs problem as well. Found taking 1 (100mg) in the mornings and 2 in the evening is the minimum to keep the nerve pains in check. I can leave the house and go shopping, walking most days now. I have tried reducing the 300mg daily but find the pains start to return. I don’t want to take more to eliminate the pains completely, as recommended by the Pain Clinic and neurosurgeon, as milder pains remind me not to overdo things. I still have some limitations, and avoid things like leaning over or sitting down too much, as certain things do aggravate the situation. It all comes down to quality of life issue; if I don’t take them I am housebound. I should take more exercise though. Pain Clinic still says I should be taking 12 (up to 15) 100mg Gabapentin daily, and are not so happy with me reducing the number I take. Would suggest trying to cut back one tablet daily for a week, and assessing if that made any real difference, and if no difference discerned try cutting back another, but just one tablet daily for a week. Gabapentin can cause weight gain, but by cutting back alone I managed to lose quite a bit of that medically induced weight. If you recognise the pains are returning then you can find the level you need to live comfortably, and have some control. I have heard a lot of negative comments about Gabapentin but they have simply made a very big difference to my life. Good luck.

@@Teresa-Anne I did not. In the past month I had a 2nd microdiscectomy which went much better than my first. A few weeks back I was finally able to entirely stop Gabapentin….and then I noticed that the ongoing indegestion that I’ve been having for the past year or so also stopped…. So appears for me… cotton mouth and indegestion were the only two noticeable side effects. Edit: I should also mention that I did have some withdrawal issues. After being on gabapentin for 27 months, once I stopped I had some dizzy spells, I was confused, almost passed out a couple of times and my sleep patterns were totally messed up. Withdrawal lasted about 4 days for me. In the end, I don’t regret taking gabapentin, it worked wonders for my nerve pain.

We explored other potential causes, like diabetes, but these were not verified. Apparently there are a lot of potential causes for toe numbness that are very hard to establish as to cause or origin. I get my blood work done every 6 months that is a complete metabolic work up to try & stay ahead of any other medical problems. We all know that cannabis is safe but is drugs that are not being tested very well? Who knows! Cannabis is scriptural and God-made. Man-made things have issues. People think that cannabis is weed. I read that Gabapentin, when combined with narcotics, increased the efficacy of the opioids. I did not know that it was addictive, however, I have severe nerve pain, among other issues, and I have tried this medication before and was put back on it by my doctor again recently. When I’m on it, I sleep 15 hours a day and have horrific brain fog. It’s hard when you can’t remember how to butter bread because of medication. I felt very stupid. It is an older drug and there are newer drugs out there with less side effects. Topamax helps with nerve pain as well, but the brain fog is just as severe if not worse. But I didn’t sleep 15 hours a day and it cause weight loss instead of gain like gabapentin did. I’m glad some people get relief from it, but for me it just adds more issues to the ones I’m already having.

I took it for anxiety. Upon increasing my dosage I developed double vision and vertigo, not related to the inner ear. The first few times ended me up in the ER. My doctors did not related this to this medicine. For 2 years, I experienced debilitating vertigo, not every day but 3 to 4 times a week. I couldn't even see to drive, I walked unsteadily. I had to use a can. I finally realized it was this medication confirmed by the pharmacist. After slowly coming off of this medicine, my vertical attacks are not nearly as often. I get vertical when I get anxiety still because it is anxiety related and that's the only time I get it but it's not to the frequencyor severity that I got it before. So this medicine definitely made it worse. I wish it would completely go away but now I could live with it. I take meclizine to deal with the symptoms and it takes about an hour or two to start working.

I was given Gabapentin for essential tremors except it made the tremors worse instead of better. In addition I felt drowsy, tired, difficulty with coordination, swelling of legs and feet.and double vision. If it is helpful for other people, more power to them!

My husband was given Gabapentin for essential tremor. The side effect was double vision which happened while he was driving. It was on his list of medication allergies. However, a year later while in the hospital he had neuropathy and the doctor ordered it and gave it to him anyway. He had prednisone induced diabetes at the time. When I spoke to the doctor he said, "he seems to be fine here". After we got home the double vision began again and I threw out the medication. He will never take it again, ever.

And now today, I only take one of the pain med and 3 gabapentin a day and get even better pain relief! So for me the gabapentin was a blessing. But thank you for the info Doc!

Yes for certain people who absolutely NEED it but like I was prescribed for anxiety I don’t think it should be prescribed like that, I’m stuck on this shit for 3 months now, and guess what the worst part is. I got through all the withdrawals on day 7, I took a bit of an extra piece of suboxone that day and just assumed that the withdrawal was from suboxone the entire time cause I felt 100%, then I started using the gaba again because I thought I hadn’t got dependent yet! fuck my life dude

I was doing fine on prescription pain medications. Was very much monitored and had regular labs & doctor visits . About 8 years ago, all the sudden my doctor told me I had to go off and weined me. Since then, my quality if life has gone downhill due to chronic pain from fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. He wanted to put me on lyricia and or gabapenton. I had o refuse as I researched and watched many videos of the side effects and said "no" to them. Many side effects are the same as my fibromyalgia symptoms. It made no sense to me. Why would I risk it?!

I can't thank you enough for your detailed information about the use of Gabapentin. I was prescribed this medication circa 2017 from a previous GP, as one of two - where the second med I can't remember the name of off the top of my head, they were prescribed to me to hopefully put an end to my booze hounding habits. I was thankful to have the print out info on the meds from my local pharmacist to give me the informed decision not to take them, though I had been approved by the provincial ministry to have them from them by that time. I since had forgotten a lot of the info I had read about these kinds of meds, so cheers for this video.

This was given to me after my ankle surgery for a fracture. It was great for the nerve twitching while healing. 300 mgs 1x per day before bedtime. It helped me sleep and calm down for healing. After a few months I didn’t like the brain fuzzies so I stopped taking it cold turkey. That made me super anxious so I got back on it. Then I saw the doc and she said I had to be weaned off it slowly. So they got me down to 100 msg 2x/day then 100z it was a process over several weeks. Worked like a charm. DONT GO OFF IT COLD TURKEY.

I took Neurontin for 20 years. Was prescribed 100 mg a day. After several years, I was put on 2 300 a day. Then 3 300. I have Idiopathic Peripheral Neuropathy and really needed something to try stopping the spasms. They are really painful. I took the 3 for about a month but couldn't function properly so I told my dr that I wasn't going to take 3 any more, only 2, to see if it was better. It really didn't clear up the fogginess at all so I told my dr that I didn't want to take any more. She said "Good!" I couldn't believe that. I don't take them at all now, but I do take Baclofen and Amitriptyline which really help me go to sleep and stay asleep for most of the night. I would never suggest to anyone to take it.

Marleen, my 49 year old daughter takes it for her MS also. She's had MS for 26 years now. This past year she had a stroke and kidney failure. She was also having hallucinations. She has 5 different doctors. Neuro., GP, Uro., Stroke specialist and one other. I am so concerned about all the meds she takes. Her tremors have lessened but all the drugs are overwhelming to me. She has much anxiety and depression besides. I feel you don't know who's right or who to trust. I fear for her every day. She has managed to get her leg and foot working but is going to begin physical therapy soon. She fights to make life normal. She has been denied 3xs for disability . I recently obtained a new attorney for her. It's a shame people get help that don't end it and some that really need it dont. I hope and pray for anyone with this debilitating disease that is not studied enough. Best of luck to you and prayers. Stay Strong and Safe . God Bless You

I’m 30 and my neurologist prescribed gabapentin for “idiopathic peripheral neuropathy”, tremors, and MS-like symptoms. My MRI was normal, but I showed a positive Hoffmanns sign and clonus in my left foot, also hyperreflexive in nearly all areas he tapped. Ive been on it for almost a year; I take 200mg 2x per day. Now I get these weird jolts in my muscles when relaxed. It’s as if I’m getting a nerve conduction study done and being zapped. It’s the weirdest thing ever.!!! At first it was only when falling asleep, which I know is pretty normal (sleep starts), But now it happens regularly when certain parts of my body are relaxed. I can’t tell if it’s a new symptom or side effect

The pain clinic I went to had me try this for CMT2C disease. I ended up having severe reaction to the medication, and had to stop. They wanted to try a smaller dose, but told them no way. Be extremely careful and aware of the side effects and allergic reactions. If you are not comfortable taking this speak up, even if your voice shakes. It's your body, not theirs. There are other treatments out there. If it works for you great. If not, don't give up.
