Gabe is an autistic teen. He has one item that he carry’s it with him at all times when he is not in school. His blue fidget belt! At school he is not permitted to have it because it is distracting, but it is also distracting for Gabe to not have it. It serves multiple purposes. It helps him with his anxiety to have it with him. He makes music with it. He also loves to twist it and turn it into different shapes.
We are trying to figure out how to limit his use of the belt so he can get more accomplished at school. His teacher has shared that it causes him so much anxiety when the belt is not with him.
He has had this belt since his birthday last June!

Hi! An idea: remember the story about the little boy who wanted to take his whole blankie to kindergarten, but the teacher said "no"? His clever mother took a piece off the blankie, and he was allowed to have that in his pocket! My elementary students enjoyed that story. Perhaps a mini-belt, around the wrist, or on a little lanyard would help reduce the size but keep the prize?! peace and hello's

Why? Gabe enjoys his stim object just the way it is. A stim object for an autistic person isnt quite the same thing as a neurotypical's security object, like a childs security blanket. Its far more about the experience of interacting with a stim object thats soothing, rather than the object itself having any special meaning.

I have to say, Gabe is a very handsome young man. Despite him being non-verbal, he always has a smile on his face. Just remember if you see a rude comment, just block the user who posted it then delete the comment. The Rude users are just people who do not understand autism.

May I make a suggestion in regard 2his fidget belt? Maybe not have it in the car on the way 2school~instead have sumthin from school that he likes in the car 4the drive there. But leave it in car wen U drop him off. & is his instructors could give him sumthin realy small & quiet 2handle & can keep in his pocket 4the day should he need sumthin?? Later when U pick him up bring his belt with U & 'trade' 4the 1 that was left in the car 4the drive 2school??? We finaly worked this out 4my 5yr old granson. He only goes 2½hrs a day but that will change this summer wen he goes for a longer day & different campus😮. We're hoping his new instructors will let him have sumthn there during the day🤞🙏.

Don't give that, don't encourage such a thing and dependency to Twist and twirl something. Try to share with him other ways that may be helpful for relaxing the body and being okay without that. I overcame stimming my moma did not encourage it and took it away and then I myself realized that I don't wanna live like this and put my stimming straw under the pillow and refused to touch it. The addiction to it or dependency on it for relaxation and focus went away eventually

I like how you tell him that he needs to communicate read my comment below because I am walking proof that contingent on the parenting with autism is a direct correlated outcome to their like milestone achievement my stepson at four years old did not say a word not mama not dad not a word and after me being in his life for six months was talking with a vocabulary of 300 to 500 words and after 1 years of him being part time at dads , and me being a nurse and my mom being a teacher , this little Boy , he was talking at normal age developmental level of a five-year-old ! I emphasize this because it literally makes me almost sick to my stomach to see the autistic diagnosis on the rise now I am totally well aware that there is a percentage like your son who have the best parents excellent parenting skills and it’s a genetic composition why he is how he is But I truly believe that only about 5 to 10% of cases I firmly believe from my experience as a nurse that majority of this is bad parenting and I’m gonna explain so I get very concerned that there is a genetic ism that is very real but there’s also with social media and horrible parenting. I’ve witnessed due to parenting children not reach milestones because of bad parenting and I think that there does need to be way more awareness spread on this child abuse is on the rise. Child neglect is on the rise and the doctors are just, throwing the autism label on multiple children it like white rice it’s insanity because what happens is there is child neglect going and becoming missed and abuse and stuff every single case as a nurse that I have noticed where there was sexual abuse and trauma involved the child had an autistic diagnosis and I’m trying to get some research in here because I think Gabe is the 5% of the population where it’s a genetic where it is not parenting. It’s not obviously look at how good of a mother you are, but I don’t want people to get so throwing this diagnosis on every child that doesn’t talk because look at the situation with my stepson. It was the parenting of his mother why he was not communicating she would just give in and she was very paranoid about everything. She wasn’t letting him run on the grass barefoot at two years old she wasn’t letting him, make a mess eating spaghetti with his hands like a normal one year old would like she was actually holding him back from the milestones and he wasn’t actually autistic. It was the parenting and I’m getting fearful because this diagnoses is on the rise insane on the rise and I just hope you can use your platform to spread awareness about this and think of my stepson, instead of instantly autistic diagnosis that is behind milestones I think a lot of other things that should be assessed or that actually are not being assessed and it’s really really scary, because many times really bad neglect is going on or child abuse or simply just too much screen time and horrible parenting with social media. This is a very real thing and it’s some type of taboo that no one wants to talk about but it needs to be spread away because doctors physicians teachers therapist they need to do a full up on the dynamics in a home when a child is not reaching their developmental milestones you cannot just go and slap an autistic diagnosis on a child because they don’t speak or because they’re not reaching certain milestone and socially tactile sensory OK with my stepson case he could’ve gone and ended up in a bad situation in life because he got that autistic diagnosis slapped on him wrongly when it was horrific parenting and unfortunately, I am seeing way too much of this being a homecare nurse in the pediatric population there’s too many cases where I come into a child and they weren’t saying one word after me being their nurse for a year or so. The vocabulary is 1000 words so that tells me there’s something going on in the dynamic of the home.

Just be careful bc research is showing we want autistic kids to also have same structure as regular children so therefore we don’t want regular children constantly being distracted, and I just encourage people to not use stemming during lessons or teaching or certain things that he needs to know societal norms of that’s gonna distract you from what we’re trying to focus on that’ssomething that is not being shared enough about how skimming is really good, but unfortunately, at times it can be a distraction and I think you have to raise the risk of being distracted Because I have noticed that some parents use a child’s disability to make excuse for everything like and when you do that, you’re actually holding the child back. There’s still has to be rules. There still has to be norms even if a child is paralyzed a wheelchair. Yes, we accommodate children, but I think sometimes I’ve noticed being a nurse myself. Some parents have in advertently held their kid back like my stepson was completely nonverbal until four years old when I met him after six months of me being in his life, he could fluidly talk like he talk now is completely normal for his age development because I would not give him things. He used to just grunt in point at things and the mother would always just give him what he wanted without making him try to communicate, whether it was sign language whether it was verbally when he would come to his dad‘s house on the weekends, we didn’t give him what he would in point. We made him communicate and slowly, but surely after I had my daughter with his father so now he has a sister and he saw his baby sister communicate it encouraged him more as well, just like the incident with Gabe in the car with the music. He didn’t have any other way to communicate that he wanted the music up other than using his words and that’s why he used his words because you were in the front seat he couldn’t just go to his natural look at my mom and she’s gonna give me and do what Iwant because she’s my mom knows my needs because she created me so I’m just trying to spread awareness that if you want your child to reach these milestones, it is possible and somewhat cases and don’t just give in try to make sure that they are not distracted try to make sure that they are communicating at the end of the day. It is for their best interest. It’s not being mean.

I hope you can decipher out the message. I’m trying to communicate below because my screen is broke and I’m talk texting driving which I know is not safe, but I had to get this off my chest and I really hope your wife and you can marinate on what I’m saying And maybe later I will go and edit the typos so it can be better. Understood what I’m trying to get out here cause this is something that people with a platform and who have a child that is in that 5 to 10% where it is completely genetic and it is an actual real autistic. Diagnosis need to start spreading awareness about because this diagnosis at times is placed on way too many children wrongly because of horrible assessment skills beteachers physicians, nurses OK and there’s some bad things going on in the home that actually is the cause of the child not reaching milestones, not speaking, having tactile sensory and developmental issues and I know it’s something people don’t wanna talk about these things ,but for love of children we must spread awareness on this if we want our children to reach their best potential that God has given them, because a lot of the times two parents are not even being transparent with the dynamics within a home and unfortunately, 70% of cases that I’ve dealt with it was not genetic and there’s no clinical research done on this but the statistics are there and we know this diagnoses on the rise and it’s being wrongly diagnosed unfortunately on many neglected children, abuse children things that are really, really scary going on in homes or just really bad parenting combined with too much screen time that’s not educational screen time and I could give countless examples of this but remember remember people, big Pharma big big big big Pharma and the Biden administration so I just encourage anybody that a teacher or a nurse working in the homecare setting and you see a child that is not hitting their milestones that is falling behind on their speech or doesn’t speak at all. It is not appropriate to suggest to a physician that the child has autism. There needs to be a complete work a complete assessment of those family dynamics, and the specific parent and going on and if you want the reason why I’m saying this, please read my comments below
