Aoife Ní Fhearraigh - Gabhaim Molta Bríghde (I Give Praise to Saint Brigid). A beautiful song sung in Irish by Aoife Ní Fhearraigh which gives praise to Saint Brigid of Kildare, one of the three patron saints of Ireland. The lyrics are below, along with the phonetic and English translation. Bain sult a chairde !
Lyrics:
Gabhaim molta Bríghde, iníon í le hÉireann
[gaw-im molta breejya, inyeen ee leh herrin]
I give praise to Brigid, daughter of Ireland
Iníon le gach tír í, molaimís go léir í.
[Inyeen leh gakh tcheer ee, molameesh guh lyair ee.]
Daughter of all lands, let us praise her.
Lóchrann geal na Laighneach, soils' ar feadh na tíre
[lo-khran gyal nuh ly-nyakh, syl-shar fah nuh tcheera]
The bright torch of Leinster, shining across the country
Ceann ar óigheacht Éireann, ceann na mban ar míne.
[kyawn air o-yakht errin, kyawn nuh man ar meenya.]
The leader of Ireland's youth, leader of gentle women.
Tig an Geimhreadh dian dubh, gearra lena géire
[Tcheeg unn gy-ruh jee-un doov, gyarra lena gyaira]
The house of Winter is dark, cutting with its sharpness
Ach ar lá le Bríghde, gar dúinn Earrach Éireann.
[akh air law leh breejya, gar dwinn errakh errin.]
But on Brigid's Day, Spring in Ireland draws near to us.
Gabhaim molta Bríghde, iníon í le hÉireann
[gaw-am molta breejya, inyeen ee leh herrin]
I give praise to Brigid, daughter of Ireland
Iníon le gach tír í, molaimís go léir í.
[Inyeen leh gakh tcheer ee, molameesh guh lyair ee.]
Daughter of all lands, let us praise her.

Call me crazy. I’m Armenian, and Armenia is a mountainous highland much like ireland and scotland. Each time i hear this music, it takes my soul back home and it feels so familiar as if it’s being sung in my native tongue. Must be something about these mountains or the tunes of the music that strikes a cord in me of a landscape we share. Great respect to the owners of this proud music and history!

I love and respect Armenia and other cultures. I believe we learn more about each other by finding our similarities rather than differences. In this case Armenian genocide and Irish oppression are very similar story's. this leads to the birth of such rich strong cultures who recognise each others soul through our art and people. The world needs more people like you these days brother. Stay safe.

Raffi you are an absolute gentleman. Same to you and the beautiful rich Armenian culture. Moments after reading your comment I started looking up facts about Armenia. I already knew a bit (not ready to sit any exams yet) but to repeat a bit from my last comment when we are respectful towards each other we learn how alike we all are. Fair play bud. I'll leave you with my favorite old Irish saying. "May the wind be always at your back. And may you get to heaven an hour before the devil knows your dead"

Picture it: You're a Monk in 764, the mainland is still suffering the effects of the great migration and the Collapse of the greatest empire the ancient world ever saw, but on your tiny little island, in a grey stone monastery you're tucked away from all of the troubles of the mainland Europeans, you spend each day praying and copying down the texts of the Ancient Romans and Greeks so that future generations may still have the knowledge that was endangered by the fall of Rome. You look out your window, at the grey clouds over the sea, life is Tranquil, you wonder what the world was like when Rome was around, and what it will be like, and go back to copying down the Iliad.

I am Irish, the people in the South of Ireland came as ancient farmers from the Mediterranean and Middle East 5000 BC and mixed with the native hunter gatherers tribes. Later came many other peoples, 1613 BC there was mass movement after a volcano in Santerini Greece and not to mention the Vicking qho came from Scandinavian. We are all one big family sister!

Trust me when I say the truth about history isn't what you've been taught. Remember this, it is (his story or history) the narratives tell lies (tell lie vision or television) the rulers (parasites or elites or kings and queens) have killed this language. We must find our roots or find who we really are. Such a beautiful song.

Riagán, "Tig an geimhreadh dian dubh" is just " The hard black winter comes", not "House of winter" which would be "teach an gheimhridh" (tuiseal ginideach, genitive case). Standard is "teach", "tigh" in some dialects, sometimes pronounced "tig".

The early Christian Church cleverly appropriated and co-opted the ancient pagan gods, goddesses and sacred sites, making saints of the deities, adding feast days atop the old festivals and building churches on and adjacent to the old stone circles and menhirs. In old Scottish Gaelic the words were the same for "Are you going to church?" and "Are you going to the stones?"

@@Nick82981 No, you're very wrong there. There are many Christian churches that predate the Catholics. The Orthodox being the most representative. Actually, we Catholics are an offshoot of them Orthodoxes. We wanted the Bishop of Rome to be Head of the Church and we split off. Before that, the Archbishop of Constantinople was considered the head of the Church, as Constantinople was the biggest Christian city in the world. Other contenders were the Patriarchs of Jerusalem and Alexandria. Also, let's not forget the Egyptian Copts, the Ethiopian Church, the different Assyrian Christian Churches (am not sure whether the Nestorians are considered part of the Assyrian Churches), the Lebanese Maronites, etc. So, in all honesty, we Catholics are the penultimate arrivals, or evolution.

All praise to Bhríde, One singular Virgin daughter of Ireland, Virgin daughter of all lands St Brighid was an actual historical person, who was born of a slave woman & a king; her mother gave birth to her holding a doorpost, on the threshold; she was fostered to a druid uncle, who taught her the ancient mysticism of ''old Ireland; she refused to Marry, though she had many suitors & plucked her eye out on the road & threw it at a king's son who was following her down the road trying to get her to marry him. Flowers sprung up where she walked & she fed the poor (once selling her father's jewelled sword to buy food); she had a female companion she could not live without whom she slept with every night & she also blessed a very young woman who was 'in trouble' & the baby 'went away'; she was radical, indeed

Why is the word inion pronounced as (unwin)?

The Irish brought this back with them from the crusades. Also their drum looks Turkish.

I am confused...the lyrics provided I think are wrong, its "ionmhan", meaning beloved, not "iníon" (daughter). Minor detail, but important to me.

It should either be "Brighde" or "Bríde". It doesn't make sense to combine them both.

It means take. Another meaning is to sing, speak or recite and this is translated above as "give".

If only the people from the Highlands and Islands took the time to learn the language of their ancestors and defend it like their welsh brothers then the language would survive and prosper. To blame the English people for its demise is clearly racist . The education act of 1870 which enforced all education to be taught in English was probably its death knell not the English people

This song is actually pagan. Very old too. I'm surprised that you were able to find one. The Druids were wiped out by the Christians, and most of their music, and holy places were burned or forgotten.

I find it interesting how much Christianity has take from pagan religions. Many of the holidays they celebrate are actually based on pagan rituals. Why the separation though, if some things remain the same?
@Nornagast
@Nornagast 10 лет назад
The Celts didn't really separate their paganism from Christianity, they just accepted God into their pantheon and made Him the chief and every other god became a saint or angel. It is the Romans who were violent in rejecting pagan gods and it isn't until modern times that neopagans acted in a reactionary way towards Christianity. But Celtic Christianity was somewhat syncretic.
@Nornagast
@Nornagast 10 лет назад
***** They are not "based on" pagan rituals, but simply adopted the holidays. Contrary to popular belief, the Christmas Tree wasn't a pagan ritual from pre-Christian times, but invented in Germany some time in the Renaissance. And the use of the evergreen tree was in Judaism in ancient Israel, as well as Chinese religion, and yes, European paganism.

There is a Hungarian folk song, which begins exactly like this song, (I forgot its name, but I'll try to remember. If I am right that Hungarian folk song is a prayer to Mary, mother of Jesus).
