In our society when rates of mental and physical illness are on the rise, despite advanced modern medicine, we must look within to ask where we are going wrong. Dr. Gabor Maté is back on The Know Thyself Podcast today, for a deep dive into his analysis of our toxic culture, and how we can heal by finding our true, authentic selves.
He explains how to transcend the hypnotic passivity that we have fallen into, and begin to take our health (mental and physical) into our own hands. He explains generational trauma, ignorance in the medical system, and how the coping mechanisms we develop as children lead to detrimental subconscious patterns. He also explains overcoming addiction, emotional awareness, and whether he believes there is a 'divine design' in all our wounding.

I'm a psychologist and I can relate to all that he says , both personally and professionally. He is a powerhouse of wisdom. So much clarity and such amazing information, imparted so clearly and simple. His humility shows when he says you don't have to buy my book if you don't want to. You can borrow it from a library. This is so contrasting to the tons of self help/ life coaches who arrogantly tell you to buy their books and make tall claims. This man is a gift to humanity. God bless him and his work. Thank you for making such interviews freely available on RU-vid.

Andre is such a gifted interviewer. He asks the most profound questions that many seek answers to. Furthermore, he is such a great deep listener. He waits for the answers and smoothly then moves on. There are alot of podcasters out there who do not have this skill and the audience never gets the full answer. Thank you, Andre. I am impressed by you, young man. Keep bringing us this amazing content.

Totally agree. So many times I think shut up and let him talk, but not here. There are also some interviewers who feel the need to repeat what their guest says every time, and some interviewees tho say "great question" each time before answering! "Super excited" is another one that gets me. Moan apart...there are some excellent interviewers and guests on RU-vid. Long may it continue.

I was prescribed Ritalin. Immediately, I stopped biting my nails, I went from there a day to .5mg a week. I became sociable and got four jobs plus a volunteer job. Miracle!

He has suffered and paid deep attention to other human beings in distress. He explains human trauma so well. I have Gabor's book, The Myth of Normal, and read it at top speed, being as hungry and thirsty as I was for truth.! Now I want to go through it more slowly, to honor my needs for healing at just about every level to mourn the losses of my early life, and be here more completely in this latter end of my life for myself yes, but also for my children, and all who mean a lot to me. What a gift this is for me, I know, but can see how much it could change our world over time. This podcast was lovely to watch and to listen to. Many thanks to you too, Andre, for the intelligence, comfort and love you also display in giving this platform to Dr. Gabor Mate. Thank you both for your being!!! Shelagh!

False diagnosed by a inexperienced therapist which had just started therapy practise and she had only seen me 3 to 5 times - diagnosed me with Bpd - had to take overdose of SSRI and gained terribly weight and other severe side effects - when I informed our experienced family doctor - he warned me that most of those "diagnosis" are terribly wrong and he gave me the wise advice to tapper those medication which I started immediately with success - never ever had a personality disorder at all - never ever will take any medicine nor diagnosis from any therapist or psychiatrist at all - my trust into those psychodocs has gone - today I do help myself with watching videos from Gabor Mate which helps me more than any mediciation could ever do it for me.

I was misdiagnosed with BPD and a therapist (not a prescriber) tried to scare me into trying an SSRI for early pregnancy anxiety due to hormonal changes. I soon felt much better without a single intervention, thanks also to my pregnancy hormones. Pregnancy and breastfeeding were protective for me, and I trusted myself to seek care if I were to need it. Later on, I was able to correct my diagnoses and eventually after significant effort and expense received appropriate care from individuals who listened to me. I am able to tolerate a low dose SNRI now as part of my treatment plan. SSRIs are incredibly dulling and numbing, but they can help those who are highly anxious, for example. Medications can have a place, and treatment must be individualized and only competent prescribers should be the ones to recommend them.

Dr Mate has touched on the actual crisis in the human existence.. we are not our body ,mind or our personality .. our essence is spiritual by nature and this is why we try to comfort ourselves by so many means throughout our lives . I would like very much for Dr Mate to introduce more of the ancient spiritualism that can help us have a solution to this identity crisis in humanity

Growing up in another country (a collectivistic country) I soon noticed that loneliness, isolation and disconnection were the main themes illustrated in American movies. I then moved to the US and could see first hand how the possibilities of becoming independent so quickly made it possible for someone to just move away and be on their own...which could be great, except that it perpetuates separation and keeps people detached from others. Connection is the solution to many mental health and societal issues. I think.

Even as a scientist and doctor, someone who avoids using words around "divinity," he respects those who see the world animistically and spritually. Science is a valid way to see the world but it is not superior to, and is incomplete without, the heart-centered/intuitive/feminine/indigenous gnosis.

Gabor confirms, what i always known to be true, i am a bit of a healer, but due to culture and domestication i fell into similar traps. Luckily i was always looking for my truth and understood the need for consciousness. Returning to who i always was. And helping others with the same.. ❤

Dr Gabor Mate is an inspiration and I resonate with him whenever he speaks. I had Breast Cancer back in 2019 and it was a total shock as I was 31. Honestly, it is one of the best things that happened to me as I became sober from alcohol and changed my life. It was traumatic too. I quelled a lot of my anger and suppressed trauma for years. I had a very traumatic childhood and still working through this trauma now. I have changed a lot as a person as a result of the cancer. My mother passed away from cancer and we had a strained relationship and I held anger and resentment towards both of my parents. One of the best gifts I'm giving to myself is the space to heal and attending therapy so I can be a healthier person and have healthy relationships. It's quite amazing how dissociated and disconnected we become due to trauma. Thank you for this great video and for your channel! I appreciate these wise conversations, especially considering the world we are in.

I NO LONGER HAVE MY VOICE SILENCED. I ROAR!! You are constantly being re-born, re-created, re-generated, every moment! Concepts, thoughts, and stories are constantly being re-created. You are generating it ALL, and this is unconscious. When you ‘uproot’ repression and suppression, you unveil Flow. You CAN change IN! AN! INSTANT! Every morning you wake up, your life story is re-constructed... Do I have to wake up believing reality is the way I believed it was yesterday? When breathing is restricted, get curious about what is holding it back, when it is open, get curious about why that is... YOU ARE THE ARTIST! Awareness of something alone IS enough! It untangles itself, the knots lets go of You. Choose Freedom. Take responsibility for your own suffering.

This was a helpful episode I’m reaclimating with indigenous culture and I’m Canadian and I think it has done more work on my issues than years of therapy and many pills. It has made me realize we need to be one with the world and work together it helps me get out of self and it’s made me more present and grateful. This is a great episode I wish there was a simple way to immerse yourself into indigenous culture

As a child I experienced SO much stress to the point I didn’t know what to do & I knew something was very wrong, I just couldn’t understand. On top of that I was addicted to junk food and at 19 it escalated to drugs😊

I was diagnosed bipolar for a long time , i had to take a lot of medications my all life was broken but I had the intuition to not follow the classic terapists and than I start to work on trauma with somatic experience of levine and slowly slowly i incredible stop taking medication and than thanks to Gabor and others researches i get out alone , in italy we are really with out knowing this things, the ignorance kill a lot of people.. all diagnosis are old and wrongs.. here it seems they didn t know traumas and how affects our lives.. i saw so many lives destroyed by the classic and conservative medical system, i call it the modern pandemia it is the power of the ignorance. This is only my testimony from a really difficult country like italy

I have only listened to the first 15 minutes and am filled with so much gratitude for someone who speaks the truth and in such a lucid and insightful way. I saw the towers on fire in NYC. I didn't think they would fall, and I got on the train to go to work. I remember thinking - whatever is happening to the towers will be used as a pretext to bomb an oil-rich country and/or a country that we can easily attack and profit off of. And I was 100% right. And as Dr. Mate said, anyone paying actual attention would have known the "weapons of mass destruction" malarkey was a con. Long story a bit shorter - we have to somehow find our way back to the natural world, from birth to adulthood, we have to live more freely and naturally. Even childbirth has detached us from nature - women birth in sterile hospital rooms with doctors who want to go home early so they perform c-sections. And the hospital gives women free formula...This is just the very beginning of all the steps the "powers that be" do to detach us from our true, natural, loving, healthy selves.

I love that you mentioned birthing and motherhood! I kid you not, I grew up thinking I *hated* children and was repulsed by the thought of being a mother and having my own family. Guess what, it is the culture women have to be mothers in that I detest. Still very much child free at this point but this was an incredibly valuable insight to me and showed me once again that it is not me who is broken.

⚠️ I have seen thousands of these videos on RU-vid. People trying to explain what we are. Thousands of theories, since Krishnamurti, Eckhart Tolle, Sadhguru, several writers, psychiatrists, psychologists... Philosophers, Buddhists...Carl Jung, Freud...you name it. Every one says a different thing. Krishnamurti seems to be the most aware of what's going on. 🙏👍

I can safely make this comment on this video - you can tell which guests are more attuned to the essence & Vibration of both the interviewer & his mission - by seeing who takes their shoes off in that space! Sure - it might be a studio surrounding it - but André's created a space, with a vibe & feel. Those who keep their shoes on aren't picking up on the overall Vibration here. Dare I say it - aren't 'progressed' enough. No judgement! It's just an observation - because we all have our own place on our journeys. I myself am still learning how to navigate the 3rd Density effectively.

It's the only way we will ever understand how to Revere our lives and enjoy our time here!. I don't know how people , especially those who are considered experts in this field, don't know that our lives here are 100% scripted and centered around all of us suffering, unless we figure out how to not suffer!
