Regev Nyström aside from the romantic love story, almost everything else in the1997 movie is very accurate to what was known at the time. They had to go with fictional characters because allows the writer to exoloer the titanic without being restricted to what a historical figures actually did.

@@NazmusLabs Yeah that’s something that I don’t think a lot of people realize. The movie while being named after the ship. Was NEVER about that. It was about the love story between Jack and Rose.

Thats weird. Most german games and german versions of game refuse to acknowledge nazis. Even in some real time strategies nazis just cease to be during world war 2 being replaced with some made up forces

@@35november Played lots of games in germany where Nazis were called Nazis or German forces during world war two. It´s just not allowed in germany to show Nazi symbols. Only a hand full of games even cut out Hitler by name and replace it with some other stupid stuff, like the Wolfenstein games. But that´s not so common thankfully. In all older Call of Duties or even Medal of Honor games the german forces still are aknowledged as german forces or even as Nazis.

Well, not to correct you but, the Olympic was actually the more famous before Titanic sank. She was the first to be build and made headlines as the newest and best ship there. It also got damaged in the harbour by a war ship and partially sank but due to her water tight doors she floated. That profed some people that the system does indeed work that they've implemented on the Olympic class. No one thought she would never sink but she was claimed as very safe due to that accident the siter had. Captain smith mentioned i think she was indeed one of the safest ships he comanded but never said anything that she couldn't sink. The amount of Liveboats was actually enough for the time and tonnage. It was actually more then the law required. Most officers knew how to opperate the davids and boats as most of them came from the olympic but sure training dosen't make you prepared for an actual sinking. Apart from that, ineed the tragic was popular due to the famous people on board, the maiden voyage and the unimaginable that happned that a ship with the newes equipment indeed can fully sink fast enough to not get rescued in time.

Probably not the great writer you're expecting, but Morgan Robertson had written in 1898 the short novel "Futility, or the wreck of the Titan" describing the sinking of a ship in similar circumstances to those of the Titanic. There were notable changes in maritime law, it was from thenceforth required that communications be open at all times, having lifeboats depending on the number of passengers and crew it could carry and not tonnage, routes would deviate further south during the season and performing an evacuation drill became mandatory, which on itself could've saved about 500 lives. If that were the case it was most probably the rich and famous who would have occupied those places and the Titanic would perhaps be known today as the most luxurious ship of its time that sunk with a bunch of poor people. I doubt much would be written about it today if that were the case. People were quite interested in the aftermath of course, but I read that with the First World War around the corner, the Russian Revolution, then the 1929 depression and subsequently World War 2 the Titanic wasn't such a big story until the publication of "A night to remember" and its film adaptation. Up until that time it was a prelude to an era of disenchantment, a passing from a time of hope, technology as a means of improvement, from Captain Smith's words of "I think that modern technology makes it practically impossible the sinking of a ship" or so, to those of Officer Lighttoller, who said something like "I think I'll never be sure of anything again".

I agree - I think the build up of the "unsinkable ship" was a major factor in regards to the interest in the Titanic. I also think the time it took to sink was also a major thing; it was a very slow sinking with nothing anybody could do about it, which adds to the intrigue about how people were reacting or what they were doing during that time. The Lusitania also didn't have enough lifeboats just like the Titanic, but it was struck by a Torpedo and sank in about 20 minutes, whereas the Titanic took all night, giving people a lot of thought about what was happening in between. I think that's why movies were made - there was time to focus on the characters in that disastrous state.

PushingUpRoses Well I think was the Titanic incident that put the idea of putting enough lifeboats. the reason it is famous might be also the fact of how the poor were stuck in the lower decks to die when most rich lived. Also it might be also because it was a piece of ice to cause the whole thing I mean it kind of unheard to sink because of ice.

dragonheart333 Of the rich, most of the men died, too, since they weren't letting them on life boats unless they were kids. They were also letting the life boats off the ship far too unloaded. When the people consolidated later, there were like, 10 empty ones or something completely ridiculous like that.

dragonheart333 Typically, people in certain jobs are trained to respond to emergencies. Also, icebergs are actually very dangerous to ships, and the Titanic is just the most famous case. Possibly because they had warnings about the icebergs SEVERAL DAYS ahead of time from other ships to look out for them or to stay their journey until it was safe to pass, or even to take an alternate route. Because the ship was said to be "unsinkable" the crew was too cocky and ignored all of the warnings (this is the hubris I was talking about in my first post.) They were over confident that even if they did hit an iceberg, they wouldn't sink because of the way the ship was designed. What happened proved otherwise.

Rand Cabus years later but, that is sweet! I loved and still love that this game! I started playing it when I was about 7 and have played it at least once a year for the past 20 years! I had my husband buy me a computer just to play this game!

Perhaps the volume of experience worked against the Captain. This was his last voyage, so perhaps he could just sail through it, for lack of better words. ;) When you have that much experience, I guess your mind kind of goes into "What can go wrong?" mode.

In other words... its just a great background plot. The others aren't as memorable.

Here's a question: This game's story is not about the Titanic; it has it's own unique story that could have been in any other setting (or even on a boat with a different game that wasn't the Titanic). This game cost about 50 bucks back in the day. Do you think it's weird that this story is essentially using the Titanic to sell the game? Even though the game is very respectful for the actual event, this game is not about education as much as it is giving the playing a really good narrative that is unrelated to the Titanic. The Titanic isn't using the story, it's very much the other way around. Another speculation; this game came out right before the movie (but the movie was known to happen years prior to the game); I don't think it's too far off that media uses catastrophes as a cash in per se. I still think this game is solid and respectful for the most part, but it's just some extra food for thought. :)

Oh it could definitely be any of what we said. By the same token I think there's nothing wrong with taking a story and applying it to real historical events. I just feel that as long as you show the proper respect that's all that matters. Showing respect educates as it allows you to see something for what it was. Like you said though, some people simply do it for a profit. The want for money does create some really terrible stuff whether it's historically based or not. You make some very good points. :)
