I laughed on french door. Because in France, doors opening like that it's calling "Ouverture à l'anglaise". "English door" It's the same for a lot of expression, for example : "Take French leave". In french people say : "Filer à l'anglaise" "Take English leave".
@fullsdready

We french also love to put "Chinese" on things. Casse-tête chinois ("Chinese puzzle"), baguettes chinoises ("Chinese sticks"), billard chinois ("Chinese snooker" ?), chapeau chinois ("Chinese hat"), and even friggin' ombres chinoises ("Chinese shadows"). NONE OF THESE ARE ACTUALLY CHINESE, FFS

Dans le genre, y'a "dindon": en anglais on l'appelle "poulet turc", en Turquie on l'appelle "poulet indien", au pays catalan on l'appelle "poulet gallois" etc, apparemment c'est dû au fait que cet animal paraît exotique à toutes les cultures, tout le monde se rejette la faute hihi

Nah, French is more like awkwardly pronounced Spanish. English is Germanic. (Yes I get the joke, but it actually would apply better to French/Spanish than English/French because English and French belong to different branches of the Indo-european family. Hence English pronunciation and our immensely easier verb conjugation etc)
@loisfragakis7024
@loisfragakis7024 6 лет назад
I think you missed the point.. A fair majority of the english vocabulary (British English more than American) comes from french even though english is Germanic. The fact that there are lots of practically identical words that just have different pronunciations despite being from different branches is what makes the quote applicable/funny. French and Spanish are both romance languages so indeed similarities are to be expected so it isn't really in my opinion a better example, as far as I'm aware there are mainly just similar words rather than words that are actually the same (I don't know Spanish so don't hold me to it!).

I'm Franco-spanish. My mom has a very slight Spanish accent. After 30 years in France a lot of people still" don't understand" her. She ended up telling a GP to make an effort and to just listen. On her next visit he apologised to her. Moreover when people heard she had an accent they often start baby-talking to her. I studied in the UK for three years and was treated that way by a Londoner with a really thick accent. But that was the only time it happened to me.

That's not what browsing is. Browsing is looking, but includes the possibility of buying something if you happen to like it or if it makes sense, or if you find what you were hoping to buy at some point but didn't until that moment where you stumble across what you wanted. Thats the difference between american and british English, british english is very precise, convoluted at times, and not lazy at all, while American english is much more practical, made for everyday, with a much more limited vocabulary than british english so you don't get instantly class pinpointed while speaking. In England just for the accent and vocabulary you can instantly now if this person belongs to a certain class (obviously there are exceptions, but not many)
@TranscendentalTunes

You're right - American English is definitely vague, which causes problems in debate. But yeah, British English is very wordy. Every language has its strengths and weaknesses both in rule and implementation, and language and culture are closely tied together.

@Libellulaire
@Libellulaire 6 лет назад
LexiL Sify It's a double-edged sword though. English has more practical words, so you can be concise and more straight-forward. But French has usually more ways to describe things, and you can express feelings, sensations or something conceptual more easily. I think that's also why in English you have a lot of french expressions/words used (like "deja vu" and such).

Gad made up the fact that americans have words for everything, I'm french and I love the english language ( btw I studied linguistics at university) but we can't deny that the french language is more precise in term of words, that's a fact, and it's part of the fact that enlgish is easier to learn than french. Damn, even tho, we french people are getting bad at our own language and spelling that's a bit sad, for example it's like 3/4 americans would write '' your fantastic'' instead of you're. anyway, of course there are words for what he said, a few examples: browsing : lèche-vitrines toddler : bambin bunch of stuff : quelques trucs/des trucs ( this was a ridiculous one, of course we have a saying like that too..) For some reason: it's juste an expression, both languages have a lot of expressions that don't add anything to a sentence but we say it anyway, I would bet it's in every language) [Ps] Ps: Gad Elmaleh was really great and funny 15 years ago, now he became the ''watchmojo'' of french humour, I'm not raging, just saying my opinion, to me it's podcast humour, pointing ''obvious'' and normal things to make people think '' hey, that happend to me too, that's funny'' , not that much imo... Kisses from france xxxx
@EthelBH
@EthelBH 5 лет назад
I'm studying linguistics too and it's a fact that the English language as more vocabulary, while the French language has more words that have different meanings, so English is actually more precise and more factual. Also, English isn't really easier, you can easily pick up the basics because the grammar is pretty simple, but the pronounciation is actually much more difficult to deduce from the written words than it is in French, and there are A LOT of combinations of words you can't deduce the meaning of even if you know all of them separately. Each language has its own difficulties, and it also depends a lot of what your native language is.

A massage is a massage is a massage. Swedish (european) is more profound than californian, there is kneading/petrissage, serious rubbing and it is shorter. It does not involve karate-chopping. I have tried some massages, however, some are very light and impersonal (lomi-lomi is hawaian and underwhelming if you ask me. It uses the forearms but very lightly, or that's what I had anyway)

I'm amazed by the negativity of the comments coming from my fellow French people. If you don't like it it's all good but why do you feel the need to watch the video and criticize then? This is just an artist doing his thing, trying to evolve, living his life the way he intends it... and adapting to a new, different and challenging public. Having a problem with his humour or the direction it's taken is personal and completely acceptable, I just don't see the point of being so negative about it.
@clementh39

Because we're French ! haha Criticizing is all our life ! ;) But most of comments coming from french people under this video are just saying bullshits, about his religion, his money, or the fact that's he's not funny in french (which is not true). So don't even notice those comments dude ;)
