Had he grow up in the 2010s he would've been converted into DMF instead due to such technical ability and his physical trait (he seems to rarely use his body strength and way too short as a CB while he didn't have Cannavaro/Puyol/Ayala leap). But I'm sure he'd be a modern-day EXTREMELY good DMF nonetheless.

He was so good , alongside with Cabrini, Gentile & Zoff resisted the widely recognized all time greatest Brazil to win the World Cup in 1982. As a 6 yr kid I thought the way Brazil played was unstoppable, until they encountered that italian defense. Great respect!
Very gentle and wise comment. From a true lover of the game. We admired back then the brazilian " Futebol Arte" , but we had a wall in defence and " Marazico" Bruno Conti as Wing / centerforward. If that match could have replayed maybe Italy would have lost, Who knows , but whatever the outcome It would have been a terrific game

wow that's impressive because I thought Baresi was insane. Scirea seems has more time on the ball and read the game better in some way. He's passing range seems insane as well, as making busting forward runs.

I remember seeing this great defender for the first time.... and I was like will, from now on till 100 years there won’t be such a defender like him in Italian football, alongside Baresi and Maldini for sure!!!! I am a Juventus fan and Scirea is a legend. But the greatest defender (right left center irrelevant ) is Paolo Maldini. Not Moore, not Beckenbauer, not Baresi....all Gods of defense. Paolo is their Zeus.

Da milanista troppo giovane per averlo visto giocare, dai molteplici video che ho visto e dalle statistiche che lo descrivono, posso ritenerlo tranquillamente il miglior difensore mai esistito sulla Terra, aveva qualità tecniche sublimi, dribbling freddo sia in attacco che in difesa, piedi delicati che gestivano dal basso l'azione con passaggi precisi al millimetro e per concludere una capacità innata di tempismo che non ho mai visto nei giocatori di oggi, tackle sempre puliti e mai fallosi, non a caso e questo è quello che lo rende veramente il migliore, mai un cartellino rosso, da DIFENSORE!

Questo non significa soltanto che fu estremamente corretto, ma anche che non sentiva (e non aveva) bisogno di ricorrere a dei falli per fermare gli avversari. Lui poteva contare sulla sua raffinatissima tecnica. Oggi si insegna ai giovani calciatori a essere "più cattivi in campo", mascherando questa fase con la super-ipocrita motivazione che si tratta solo di far valere la propria esperienza.. in realtà li si istiga al fallo sistematico, e spesso a far male sul serio all'avversario. Una cosa inaccettabile!.. Scirea invece rappresenta l'anima più pura di questo sport. Basti pensare che nei primi anni alla Juve il suo compagno di squadra Franco Causio lo rimproverava dicendogli appunto di essere più cattivo in campo, di buttar giù l'avversario qualche volta, ma Gaetano rispondeva candidamente ".. non ci riesco..". Una persona straordinaria oltre che un fuoriclasse inimitabile. Il nostro calcio avrebbe più che mai bisogno di gente come lui in questo periodo storico..
He was more than a defender, Scirea was one of the first "libero" in history and the best in that role together with Beckenbauer, he played like a "regista" making long assists from the defence or progress to dribble the midfielders and even reach the box to shooting and scoring goals, more than a defender and he did it all with pure class, even the tackles on the ball without ever taking a red card
Gaetano Scirea è stato il miglior difensore che il calcio italiano abbia mai avuto; il fatto che se ne sia andato molto prematuramente, non toglie nulla alla sua grande carriera, perché non si è mai visto in un unico difensore tanta eleganza, pulizia di giocata e correttezza, basti pensare che non è mai stato espulso, cosa più unica che rara per chi gioca dietro. Qualche esperto lo ha definito il Beckenbauer italiano, paragone che per me ne descrive adeguatamente lo grandezza di giocatore. Chi lo conosceva dice che fosse anche una persona esemplare anche fuori dal campo, e questo non fa che aumentare i rimpianti per averlo perso tanto presto; Riposa in pace Gai, e lassù, insegna agli angeli a giocare a calcio.
Di tutte le qualità calcistiche che si possono ascrivere a Scirea - e ci sarebbe l'imbarazzo della scelta - penso che la sagacia tattica fosse il suo pezzo forte. Giocare da libero a quel tempo significava saper posizionarsi bene non solo dietro i difensori, ma quando questi venivano "schiacciati in area" dal forcing avversario, occorreva anche avanzare e dar man forte al centrocampo che evidentemente in quel momento non riusciva a supportare a sufficienza la difesa. Scirea in tutto questo era superlativo, e riusciva pure a inserirsi in attacco e segnare parecchi gol. Paradossalmente France Football non ha mai capito la grandezza di questo titanico fuoriclasse, non avendogli mai assegnato il Pallone d'Oro, nemmeno negli anni 81- 85 in cui raggiunse l'apice della sua bravura.. una macchia indelebile nella storia di quel premio, non certo nella carriera di Gaetano che resta il miglior libero di sempre.

Why is it Maldini and Baresi are very well known outside of Italy and the world but Sciera isn't so known by his name? I wasn't even familiar with him but he's regarded as the best Italian defender of all-time. I know he died at 36 in a tragic car accident but still I only found that out after googling him.

Però certe giocate difficilissime gliele vedevi fare con incredibile leggerezza solo a lui.. nel 1982 dovevano assegnare a Scirea il Pallone d'oro, non a Rossi. Cmq va bene così dai, ci ha in ogni caso deliziato x anni con la sua inarrivabile classe e correttezza. Semplicemente un Mito!
Bel video: all'inizio pensavo fosse il solito servizio che incensa il suo carattere gentile (per quanto possa essere vero, non mi sono mai piaciuti i personaggi creati totalmente positivamente dai media.. ognuno ha il diritto anche di avere la propria parte negativa) .... Grande Gaetano calciatore e persona perbene mai una alzata di testa corretto fuori e dentro il campo.di una classe unica difendevi senza essere falloso e ti inserivi in attacco meglio di un centrocampista e poi i gol anche quelli di testa di piede destro sinistro e poi dicevano che la juve faceva il catenaccio....I Gentile i Cabrini erano i laterali come li chiamano oggi.ti rispettavano tutti anche gli avversari.un esempio da proporre nelle scuole calcio

Io preferisco Scirea per la completezza (in pratica sapeva far tutto), ma ammetto che Baresi era impressionante e insuperabile soprattutto nei recuperi. Sono di certo i migliori difensori italiani di sempre, ma ci aggiungerei anche Maldini e Cabrini, che hanno dato un'impronta davvero rivoluzionaria al ruolo del terzino sinistro, avviata a onor del vero da Facchetti. In ogni caso la tradizione italiana, in fatto di difensori, è la migliore al mondo.

@@RuiBarreiras Beckenbauer was more a complete player than Scirea (even better technical skills, heck he was even the most technically-gifted German player ever, as well as taller and stronger), but in pure defensive IQ, Scirea was a level above him. Even with his physical handicaps for a CB (rather short, pretty fast but by far not the fastest player, nothing too special in the air even in his era, and not strong), he managed to keep the most dangerous opponents at bay and he used his brain on the pitch more than anyone.
