This episode is the first live taping I got to attend in person and it was one of the best experiences of my stupid life. I even got to ask Seth a question during the q&a and he looked me in the eye and spoke to me and I just about floated off of my skeleton. (Seth, if you ever see this, I was the weirdo who told you you're my emotional support comedian.) He stood right next to my husband in the aisle and I wanted to take them both home with me and live happily ever after. And that was probably me screaming like a banshee when he said "It's time for a closer look." Anyway, this closer look will always hold a special place in my heart. Thanks Seth and LNSM for a truly wonderful experience I'll never forget.

THE WATERSHED ANALOGY July 18 2024 I am an 85-year-old retired civil engineer and land surveyor. I have a professional civil engineering license in Idaho, Wyoming, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Florida. Throughout my career as an engineer, I have a number of occasions when I have had to determine the size of the pipe or culvert as it passed under the highway or other obstruction. Civil engineers use a formula for determining the amount of flow required to determine the size of the structure necessary. The formula is Q =CiA. Strangely enough the Q results in a flow in cubic feet per second, cfs. The C has to do with the characteristic of the watershed. If it’s heavily forested the number is small. If it is concrete or ice the number might be much larger: basically, a percentage. The i is the expected rainfall determined for a period of time. In the past it has been for 100 years. The A is the area of the watershed as determined generally using a planimeter on a map. As a practical person I usually just asked the farmer in the neighborhood about how much water has ever gone through that stream. We were generally successful. I would like to try to apply this Watershed Analogy to a current event. It is the RNC convention in Milwaukee right now. There is no doubt a storm brewing. Despite pleas for normalcy, black clouds are on the horizon. Pertaining to the C part of the equation, there is not much chance of absorption into the ground of the tremendous runoff anticipated in the event of a Republican win. It’s as if the mountain that this rain falls on is of concrete or ice. All of the runoff will result in a devastating flow downstream. The i part of the equation which is the amount of rainfall must be considered to be much greater than a 500-year storm. Is not anticipated to be a gentle trickle. It as Bob Dylan sang, Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall. So now the engineers are required to determine ways to either limit the flow or diminish the damage that will surely occur to all the structures in its path. Consider the entire administrative part of the government. For instance, if the department of highways now under PROJECT 2025, might experience this: a civil engineer using the calculations determines the size of a pipe under a highway. The private company managing the highway declares that this size pipe is unnecessary and it’s too expensive. They go to court. A judge determines the size of the pipe. You decide if this is a good idea.
