They've really improved their folder abilities. I almost dropped my Gaia subscription a couple of years ago because at the time it was just horrible. Kudos to them for making it easier, but with that said, I wish they'd offer the option of saving all the data to my local hard drive, then syncing it to the cloud account automatically. Honestly, it would be easier to file it on the computer than in their interface.

Fantastic Tutorial. Well, done Mate! Here in Australia (OZ) I've just recently bought a Garmin Zumo XT2 for my motorcycle. (Honda CBX500). Part of the process of getting routes onto the Zumo XT2 and working properly, involves using Gaia GPS to map the route. The Gaia GPS files still need to be exported via "Garmin Base Camp" and then onto the Zumo. It's a steep learning curve! Gaia GPS (from what I've been told) is a lot easier to use and do the actual routing, than having to do it all on "Garmin Base Camp". So, understanding how the folder system in Gaia GPX works correctly, is critical if I want the map route files to work in "harmony" with the Zumo XT2. For the past 13 years, I have worked in a Hardware store here in OZ. So, having to keep things super organized down to tiny details (literally thousands of store items to keep track of) Is already is my nature!😆 PS: I've subscribed to your channel as knowledge is power and peace of mind, when travelling alone and remotely on a Motorcycle. 👍

Having to be able to have multiple levels of folders is great. OnX needs to do that. I let them know at Overland Expo.

Thank you Matt. This video came at the perfect time. I finished up a 5 day overland in the North Maine Woods and wanted to go back and clean it even more. I like being super organized. This was my first trip using GAIA and have a solid handle on it now. Learned as much ahead of time. Learned stuff on the trail. Now this was the final step.

OnX has some good features. But they need to have their folders are only one level. I let them know at Overland Expo that they need to do that. I use three apps.

I don’t have anything at for my Jeep other than stock sized M/Ts. No mods at all. Also don’t have an off road or trail gps routing system. All that said, I want to ride trails. Does Gaia have preloaded trails in their database? Can I go to their website and download trails in my area? If so do they have ratings that would indicate whether a stock rig cold do the trail? Sorry if these are dumb questions, but I’m limited on time off as well as ability to just buy things I don’t know anything about just to see if it’s what I want. Thanks for the videos!

Thanks for the excellent tutorial. I learned a lot from this. What I don't like about Gaia's file system is that it makes every type a file into a folder and it's very cluttered. For example I imported a gpx file (track) into the main map. Gaia puts this into the folder tree with a folder icon next to it. If I move it into my "Hike Planning" folder, the original gpx file shows up in that folder and in the original spot. The top level in the file system still shows the original GPX file. Unlike a normal Windows or IOS filing system, when you move a file into a sub-folder, it's no longer in the original folder. This makes things really cluttered. This seems to be a common complaint on hiking blogs. Am I missing something here?

I've been chipping away at my backlog of waypoints and really wish there was a way to do bulk moves. I have realized that I should have been organizing by state the entire time instead of campsites vs possible campsites and its been a slog going through the hundreds of POI's I've compiled. Am I missing a feature? I want to organize like you've shown here and struggle after an hour of moving one at a time to make any major dents in my backlog and then I go out camping for a week and come back with even more data to organize lol. help lol

Hello My downloaded maps and routes and POIs are numerous and shared across phones and tablets…. Do you know if it is possible to save info onto a service like Dropbox or Apple cloud when it is not needed for a trip?

@OzarkOverlandAdventures Here's what I found. using the web interface - sharing or exporting a folder from the saved items menu would not update the map for the shared individual when I made a change. Inviting them, did work, perfectly. Giving them view only access.
@OzarkOverlandAdventures
@OzarkOverlandAdventures 10 месяцев назад
@@ptrivilino correct. Exporting only includes what’s in there when you export it. Adding them (inviting them or sharing the link to the folder) will update for them when you make updates.

Gaia Overland Layer has lots of S. Korea info.
@davidk6668
@davidk6668 Год назад
One thing I found out is that if you save a layer in a folder on one device it will not allow you to update it and download it on another device. You have to save layers as is and not in folders and then it will be capable of being updated on your other devices. Gaia said they need to work on this by to my knowledge have not fixed this.
@OzarkOverlandAdventures
@OzarkOverlandAdventures Год назад
I don't know why you would put map layers in a folder.
@davidk6668
@davidk6668 Год назад
@@OzarkOverlandAdventures when I first started using Gaia I would put the map layers like Overland West Wyoming and then Overland East Wyoming in my Wyoming folder just like waypoints for organization. However if I backed this up to my account on my iPad I could not update my iPhone with same organization. Had to save map layers to the base for it to transfer across devices. This is something they don’t tell you about and Gaia knows they need to work on.
@OzarkOverlandAdventures
@OzarkOverlandAdventures Год назад
@@davidk6668 right I get what your saying. I just would never think to put map layers in a folder. That’s what doesn’t make sense. You can’t export map layers as GPX files to share them so it makes no sense for them to be in folders.
@davidk6668
@davidk6668 Год назад
@@OzarkOverlandAdventures The problem I first encountered was that when you go to save a map layer there is a section that allows you to enter the folder you want them in so naturally I did. This works just fine when you are just using one device but like me I got a new iPhone and wanted to mirror my initial iPad and everything would copy over but my map layers. Had to rebuild the map layers without folders designated to make it work. I can see someone like you that sends your folders via gpx or URL link not wanting to do this and now that I know you shouldn’t put everything in a folder it is just fine.
@JelmervanderMeer7
@JelmervanderMeer7 Год назад
I did the same. I have a Utah folder with multiple layers and an Overland west folder, trying to be organized lol. It took a while, but it did sync. Not sure how I finally got it to work, but it’s synced between iPad and iPhone. I recall having to re-do it once or twice

If CalTopo had Gaia's map layers, I would never even say the words "Gaia GPS" again. This organization is terribly inefficient compared to CalTopo's, in my opinion.
