All of our Wish Kids are special, but some make a wish that truly touches our hearts. Gaige's wish to become a robot superhero was one of them.
Gaige was diagnosed with rhabdomyoma before he was even born. This means that he's been fighting a critical illness since day one. Eventually Gaige developed aortic stenosis and required open heart surgery. Despite being very scared, he put on his superhero face and faced the villain.
Gaige's mom, Amanda, had always heard about Make-A-Wish and thought we were amazing because of all of the things we do for families. She took and chance, and her son's wish was granted.
Originally Gaige wanted to become a superhero, but wanted to to be a robot too. So we thought, why not combine the two and become a Robot Superhero? And that's just what we did.
Gaige's wish was unlike any others. We got the City of Orlando involved and they are truly the ones that made his day so special. Gaige's day began by fighting a robber at a bank. The citizens of the city were cheering and his task came from the Sheriff himself. We even got the SWAT team involved and Gaige was able to ride in the SWAT vehicle.
After fighting crime, Mayor Demings issued a press conference and presented Gaige a Medal of Merit for his bravery and contribution to Orange County Florida.
But it didn't stop there. We learned that there was an enormous fire that only a Robot Superhero could help with. Gaige handled the hose to help put out the fire. People were cheering for him because he really showed them that there was a hero within.
But his heroism didn't stop there. After he put out the fire, it was discovered that there was someone trapped on the roof of the building. Robo Gaige didn't hesitate to jump into the firetruck bucket to aid in the rescue.
When Make-A-Wish asked Gaige why he wanted to be a superhero, his answer was a simple one. 'My doctor saved my life. So I wanted to return the favor to other people.' It's one of the most selfless answers we have ever heard.
Make-A-Wish grants wishes for children and families with critical illnesses. We make sure that it is a day where they can forget the hospitals, doctors, and worries while their wish is granted. Not only do we thank our donors, but our selfless volunteers too. They are what make this organization as magical as it is.
