Galant VR-4 6-bolt & GSX 7-bolt Baselines

My efforts here are to get 2 more engines out the door. On both engines I either had an incomplete rotating assembly (7-bolt), or a rotating assembly in unknown condition (GVR-4 6-bolt) so they both needed work that we haven't done here yet. In order for my machinist to begin any work, I am required to have them cleaned and degreased with ALL of the parts obtained, and all the plugs, studs, dowel pins, etc... removed already. In this video I handle 5 different crankshafts. Three 6 bolts and two 7 bolts, all very different. Aside from what you see that differs between all of them, I am primarily and only focused on whether they fit, and what they weigh in this video.
This video has core plug, main oil galley plug, oil squirter, balance shaft bearing removal... several OEM factory tools that we've never used here before... also, main oil galley modification with RojoDelChocolate, full cleanup and forensic analysis of main bearings and how to interpret automotive cave drawings. At least mine anyway. We cover A LOT of ground. This video demonstrates a practical exercise of all things I've covered in a dozen previous videos, but on two new rotating assemblies, and in only 40 minutes. Essentially catching both of those builds up to where we are with the GSX. It's now a fair race. I spent 23 hours doing this analysis to determine the course of action with my machining goals, and condensed it into only 40 minutes of what's important for these builds.
It's important to ensure you're getting the core of your lubrication system right. Nothing is more important than starting with a properly-fitting crankshaft for how you will use the car. It lubricates all the most important parts of your engine, and occupies 3/4 of the engine's oil supply drilled off of the main oil galley. If it doesn't fit within spec, you will have problems with your oil pressure and the lifespan of what you built. I believe all 3 of these engines can be saved, but if I can get my desired results on at least two of them, I'll have everything I need to finish both cars. The goal is to still come out of this with all 3.
If you'd like to support my content, you can visit www.patreon.com/jafromobile. Members who enable notifications get a 24 hour early preview, a place to chat, and extra content that you won't find here. Everything shown in this episode other than the blocks themselves was paid for by my supporters on Patreon. It's pretty clear in this video what impact they make on what you see. They haven't just changed my production, they've changed the actual story I get to tell all of you about the revival of 2 wonderful cars.
In the video I did promise some nerdy oil clearance analysis. I'll fully explain it.
2.2435 CRANK JOURNAL
2.2455 HOLE
This provides an oil clearance of .002", the maximum stock specification (the "performance specification").
Calculating area of the main bore hole...
Area = π x radius x radius
2.2455 / 2 * 1.12275 * 3.14 = 3.95818214625 sq. in.
MINUS (same area calculation for the crank journal)
AREA OF CRANK JOURNAL 1.12175 * 1.12175 * 3.14 = 3.95113441625 sq. in.
EQUALS AN AREA OF 0.00705" between the crankshaft main, and the main journal.
TIMES 2 because there's 2 sides of the journal = 0.0141 square inches, or 0.36 square mm total leakage area.
Oil squirter measured .045" oil hole, and that hole is likely restricted because it contains a check valve. But if you apply the same math to that hole, it gives you a leakage area of 0.0016", or basically 0.04 square mm.
Oiled functions of the main journal AND squirter combined have an area of 0.0157". Or .4mm when calculated at the maximum factory oil clearance spec for assembly.
The mains also supply the rods with oil through the crankshaft so the main oil galley that supplies all 3 parts also must account for that flow. Applying all the same math for the crank pin diameter and rod bores with a .020" oil clearance, the additional leakage area for these value is 0.0111". Add that to the main and oil squirter volume and you get 0.027" or .68 square millimeters per main oiled journal.
The leakage capacity of each oil squirter is only 1/17th the total volume that can be leaked by the main oil galley that supplies it.
You remove ALL the complication from this once you measure that main oil galley that supplies all 3, and find its internal area turns out to be .074" of an inch or 1.88 square millimeters which is 3 times greater than the leakage area of the main, rod and oil squirter combined. There are no restrictions anywhere for any of these parts accessing oil flow from the main oil galley. If all 4 stuck wide open on an otherwise functioning oil system, it's just not enough oil to leak to make a difference anywhere. It would be hard to even notice that leakage on your oil pressure gauge if they were stuck open at idle.
If anyone has a case where oil squirters caused a bearing failure of any kind, I'm all ears.

Wow, that 7bolt is going to be stout. Throtl built a modern take on the F&F Eclipse. How they think Brian’s Eclipse would be built, if it were built today instead of 2001. They built a 7 bolt as well for the build. But did nothing to really improve the 7bolt’s oiling system etc. Being tedious and doing all the little things, while you’re building your engine. Will save your ass later, when you don’t have to rebuild your engine from not paying attention to these little things most folks don’t even try to do. Or at least minimize the damage that could occur by doing the oil gallery mods, tear drop mod etc. Great info here!

Look up 'Google search operators'.. You can get quite far by using a few operators, such as specifying sites to exclude, specificying exact phrases instead of allowing all words to act as individual keywords, and specifying dates. The last two will eliminate the vast majority of the utter junk that gets in the way. The other best method I found was including a part or specific chassis number, because only a small number of nutters will have referenced that!
@PSUQDPICHQIEIWC
@PSUQDPICHQIEIWC 2 года назад
@@timocallaghan4408 The search operators largely stopped working a decade ago. There are a small handful that _sometimes_ work. For example, exclusions generally don't work. Oftentimes, adding an exclusion term will actually get you nothing _but_ results including the excluded term. Searching for exact phrases similarly will give results that do not contain the exact phrase. The fact remains that search engines are increasingly ineffective. The fact that some legacy features still sometimes partially work doesn't really change much. ... but hey look on the bright side. At least it's not as bad as Amazon's site search -- at least not yet

I love that even with a nearly 44 minute video, there's more info to be gleaned from the description! Completely agree with your oil squirter analysis, not that I'm an expert. I imagine if stuck check valves could kill your oil pressure then hydraulic lifters would kill plenty of engines too. ;) Not a perfect analogy, but you get my point.
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile 2 года назад
It's a big fancy oil fountain, for sure. It would cause low idle oil pressure at the very worst if it stuck open, but they're not supposed to open until they exceed a certain pressure if they work right. I really believe that all the actual crank walk incidents were actually clutch assembly and step height problems. And of course the crank walk bolt. Still qualifies as a clutch assembly problem, but I know it's a common one.

So, what I've come to understand from your videos is that the best thing about a six bolt is how the 7 bolt will fit in the same hole.
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile 2 года назад
Actually, 6-bolt and 7-bolt are totally exclusive. One crank only fits its own block. They are not interchangeable. Many parts that bolt to them are, but the crank, rods, oil pumps and flywheels have to match accordingly. I show 2 blocks so you can see how they differ, but there's some verbal comparisons that get confused because of what you're looking at, I suppose? When I mentioned "anyone else's 7-bolt crank" for price comparison, there is only one 6-bolt crank available on a parts shelf. It costs half as much as everyone else's 7-bolt crank. That's what I was trying to say. I listened to that and thought it sounded a bit ambiguous. But perhaps I'm misunderstanding you? If you meant "same hole" by the gap between the transmission bell housing and the timing side frame rail of the engine bay. Yes. A 6-bolt and 7-bolt both fit THAT hole. ;)
@foil666
@foil666 2 года назад
@@Jafromobile Yeah, I was referring to that last part - the hole in the engine bay - and mostly in jest of course. I can only imagine the hearth (and monetary) ache along with the frustration that the 6 bolt block has been giving you with the all the misalignment in the journals, the wrong sized piston clearance, etc when compared to the 7 bolt block. I had a similar problem with a motorcycle once, no matter how much time, effort or money I put into it, there was always some other problem that popped up. We have a saying round these parts that relates to this kind of phenomena - it roughly translates to "when it's not the pants, it's the ass, or the other way round".

Maybe this block needs an align hone? If the crank is in that shape, should it be reground to -.010 inch? Do you have so many standard cranks that you can ignore it and find a standard crank? I think -.010 crank bearings are common, so it isn't a major challenge. Maybe runout exceeds factory specification? Ever think of getting 2 V-blocks and doing that yourself? Also, wouldn't it be easy to call up an auto parts store and order a crank that was already reground and ready to go? With the new Eagle crank, maybe it would be ideal To buy a set of standard bearings, a set of -.001 bearings, and mix them? That is what some old school engine builders would do to get idea oil clearance on all cylinders.
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile 2 года назад
The hone is what F'd it. It needs a line bore. I've tried the half bearing shell tricks. They turned out worse than where I started, and there was no consistency to the oil clearances I could produce. The crank was spin balanced and is 0/0g. All of its journals except for one are in factory spec. I will do everything in my power to never use another Eagle part again, even though an Eagle crank showed up here. Part of me is still considering buying a Callie$. Auto parts store will not provide anyone with a 6-bolt crankshaft as they've been out of production since 1996, and any of them that have had the hardened layer cut away or turned down are useless for my power goals. This is just something that anyone working on a 32 year old engine might encounter. The fix isn't easy or fun, and there's way too much work in this block already to start over at this point. I'd like to, sure, but the options out there aren't any better than what I've got. All of your suggestions are fantastic, clearly from experience, and I've explored most of them already. I'm going to get a straight hole in this thing no matter how I have to do it. Cross your fingers that the line bore does the trick!
@skylinefever
@skylinefever 2 года назад
@@Jafromobile I did not realize that the 6 bolt crank had a surface treatment that would be ground away with a -.010 undercut. I suppose hard welding isn't a good idea, either.
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile 2 года назад
@@skylinefever The sky is the limit with refurbishing a damaged crank, but at some point the expense of machining, welding, inductive hardening, etc... starts to outweigh the benefits of getting a custom made Callies crank. But that's only if I had a crankshaft problem? The only problem I have with the mains currently is getting a straight hole the size I need it for how it's being used. The Galant block is a street-only build more suitable for daily driving. GSX is a Strip-Street-Show car. The worst problem I have with the GSX is a straight main hole for the 6-bolt engine. The GSX 7-bolt is fine. The Galant block's hole is just too big all around. It' a straight hole, sure... but too big. I've found my way out of this by building multiple engines which is really weird. Because there's almost nowhere else in life, only on RU-vid where that can fix your issue... it's definitely the opposite of the cheapest route. But I've got seeds for all the fixes sprouting right now.

Hey Jafro, do you have any insight on the success of sleeving a 6 bolt block? Quality 6 bolt blocks are getting a little hard to find here and I'd love to go back to 85mm bore rather than keep pushing out to 86mm which for me would be final life of the block. I have a spare block which currently is at 86mm and otherwise good condition and I was considering getting this sleeved back down to 85mm.

Hey jafro! Sorry for being kinda late to the party here. You said in your video that 4g63s spin clockwise. I thought that they spin both ways depending on generation and that's why they have some on the left side of the engine bay and some on the right. The Evo 1-3 has on the right and 4-9 has on the left iirc.
@SouthlandFlyer
@SouthlandFlyer Год назад
They all spin clockwise. The Evo123/DSM has the centre diff driven off the back of 3rd gear, which being a single extra gear in the chain of power transmission, reverses the direction of rotation. The 4+ being the other way around does not have this 4th shaft in the transmission, it only has input, main, and final drive.
@JohannesKonow

@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile Год назад
Yes. Pretty cool, huh? There is translation available for this in the 4g63 overhaul manual, but it's been 2 1/2 decades since you could order the factory bearings by part number making all of that data obsolete. This does prove they were carefully QC'ing variations in the oil clearances and bearing selections at the factory. But today the only useful data it tells you is how good of a job they did at making a straight hole originally. The factory crank pin stamps are also indicated if you're lucky enough to still have the original matched pair after 30 years in good working order. Edit: It's all obsolete data that doesn't account for wear, but IT IS your engine's very first unique piece of character.

For clearances you should be using mics and dial bore gauges, not plastigage. Plastigage really is just for guesstimating clearance.
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile 2 года назад
I was hoping to not have to use them. I was hoping to find them closer to spec BEFORE the machining. When I didn't get the results I wanted, that's why the mics and bore gauge came out. Precision numbers are nearly useless if you're getting machine work done if the parts aren't machined yet. I gathered them only to see what kind of machining it was going to need. Prior to machining, plastigauge is fine for checking viability. The machinists won't use any precision measurements you supply them with. They'll take their own.

I studied petrochemical engineering 30 years ago. I will have to say that some additives work in some engines, but the rash of bad products and ideas that hit the market really turned me off to the idea of using additives in general. I understand the chemical and physical changes they can create, and I believe they can do some good for people who experience specific problems. But there are a lot of unintended consequences that can develop from using friction modifiers in some cases. Just like with software updates, I wait and let the reports roll in. If I develop a problem that can be addressed by it, and if others *I know* are having good results with it, then I might try it. Just know for instance that [LEADING NAME BRAND PRODUCT] is a 99.7% pure half-quart of mineral oil. Mineral oil can offer protection for engines, sure... and it's even the base of the products you mention. [LEADING NAME BRAND PRODUCT] is $30. Mineral oil is $4/quart retail. Pretty good profit. I can't speak for sera-tec or MOS2 as I haven't used them. But when I left engineering school, I spent about 5 years hammered drunk, and then the next 25 years in marketing, IT, and education. I watched all those cars that got teflon poured into them show up in junkyards. That's what forged my opinion on additives.

The way I look at it, the aftermarket front case is $200 from rock Auto. A new Mitsubishi front case is $450-$500 from the likes of amayama. So, while yes, it is more than twice as much, it's only a couple of hundred dollars. What's your engine & turbo going to cost you in total. That couple hundred dollars is pennies in the overall scheme of things. So, my recommendation is to get the Mitsubishi part while it's still available. I spent the money and got a new front case and straight cut gears for my 6 bolt build 4 years ago. Those front cases are no longer available it seems. All that being said, the Melling part looks like a nicely made bit of kit, and might be a great alternative. But I haven't had any experience with it before. Oh, currency is AUD for me. Figured I should mention that.

@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile Год назад
My advice would be to buy a tougher crankshaft. This one's nice, and it's certainly a work of art, but it's a factory crankshaft at its core, so it's unlikely to be much more durable than the factory crank. The builds that benefit from a lightened crank make so much power they begin to exceed the load limits of the factory crankshaft's materials. This one being ground like this was to create a performance part out of a standard part when the performance parts didn't exist. It's a creative approach, and it's a dead-nuts zero-balanced masterpiece. Yes it's balanced. The company that did this work is out of business, and another one who used to sell it will threaten to sue you if you even mention it. Callies will grind custom crankshafts, and I don't know if they'll make anything this light, but now there's lots of aluminum rod and lightweight piston options available that weren't back when this crank was made. Plenty of mass can be removed right there beyond whatever crankshaft you can get custom made or modified. I don't know anyone who offers this service today.
