Yeah, my mind is blown because I was there. One of the 4 or 5 kids who knew who they were. Tiny high school of 112 (at capacity that year) students in our lunch room/gym, had no idea someone was filming it. My friend's older brother set it up, paid them 1 or 2 hundred bucks, easy show, somehow got the school on board. Crazy times...
The 1990’s were the best because kids who cared about music and art- you could find each other. There were a lot of really great bands playing small “rooms” in front of basketball hoops with like 11 people there. It was like being gay or something. No one really cared but the people who sincerely gave a hoot, everyone knew. And a good record was like a treasure, a friend, a secret decoder. There was no google. Now, it’s all surface signals, like your clothing or some other superficial element, and so sincerity is obfuscated. People wear joy division and Daniel Johnston shirts who have never heard the music. The old analog world was more honest. Maybe that’s why there is less legit stuff delivered now. You don’t have to like Galaxie 500, but they’re real and they meant it. And so did Sterling Morrison.
I was a sophomore and in that room somewhere! Unlike Gladys I had no idea who they were but I did like them and eventually bought a tape of theirs (remember tapes?). Still amazed the teachers agreed to this. That room looks very different now after a major renovation.
By far, my favorite Galaxie 500 song, and one of my favorites from a great era of Boston music. Wish the Boston scene had stuff as good as this these days.
I found this on the perks of being a wallflower soundtrack lol very recent I didn’t know this song was 30 years old. Also, I thought it was about like 10 or 15 years old.
Great Video, thanks for posting. I just saw them last week and posted the video response above. 20 years later and still such a great song. Dean's guitar is just amazing.
I'm reminded of the time, around THIS IS OUR MUSIC, that they appeared on MuchMusic, and VJ Erica Ehm asked them about their Velvet Underground influence, and they said they'd never heard them. She started to explain it. She had the single of Fourth of July on the desk, whose flip side was a VU cover! (She also asked the band Crash Vegas how they got to work with Malcolm Burn. Jocelyn Lanois of the band was there, and her brother Daniel worked with Malcolm frequently,so figure it out...).
In the day I landed foot in Sao Paulo-BRA, back in 2003, ended up going to this Luna concert. Listening to this made me go back to that night and remember this great guitar sound.
Look at those small amps and Damon on the floor! I pulled out On Fire at my college station (huh what's this?) in 1999 and spun it, and after picking myself up off the floor I realized "I've been jamming on Luna for a couple years now..this is the same guy? Whoa!" Then drove over the boarder to Toronto to see Luna a couple times in the early 2000s. Saying Galaxie 500 is the best Boston band when there's the Pixies and Sebadoh...
This is on disc 1 of a two DVD set of Galaxie 500 live. The first disc is filmed properly like this video, the other was like a bootleg compilation. The second disc was so poorly filmed and bouncing around it made me nauseous. (I gave it to a friend after I forced myself through one viewing.) I don't know how or where I found it (probably on eBay) but I remember I got it when I bought their 4 CD boxed set. It doesn't come with audio commentary. It comes with a booklet and you literally "read along" while you're watching the DVD.
I would have loved to see them live.. Hell I would love to see Dean & Britta live too.. Too bad I'm Brazilian and most people here don't even know this brilliant band
My mistake was being, and living, in N England. The Smiths through qual control, at the time, rendered everything 2nd. G500 had the timing of, without any tags, just coming after the white hot brilliance, a different feel. UK "Snub TV". G500 was a diff "vibe". Nobody worth his salt compared, didn`t even mention it. Galaxy 500 had a tragic feel, anyway.
It was such a small school it was also our lunchroom. All students also had to help with chores, some helping in the kitchen. After lunch we all had to help put away the tables and chairs for sports.
Arkadzy, why don't you somehow acquire a $1000+ Gibson bass, a $1000 plus Gibson hollow-body guitar, two $1000+ tube amps for bass and guitar, assemble two strangers, and play for a couple of hours. I guarantee you will sound at least as good as these pathetic excuses for artists. Seriously, wake up people, you are all better than this.
